A Galveston Sojourn . . .

Jan has been wanting to do a Galveston sojourn, with lunch at Sunflower Cafe for a while now. So, a rainy day Thursday seemed like a good day for it.

Of course, the last time we were there, back last November, again on a rainy day Thursday, we had to actually wade into the restaurant due to all the flooding.

There’s actually about 6” of water on the sidewalk.

But today, although there was some water in the gutters, we had no problem getting in.

And we got our usuals, with Jan getting the Little Breakfast, Two Eggs, Bacon, Potatoes, and a Biscuit.

But the big difference between the Little and Big Breakfast is the 2 Pancakes the Big one includes.

After this delicious meal, we drove around the Island for a bit, but the steady rain sent us home earlier than planned.

And of course, a rainy afternoon was the perfect time for Hot Pumpkin Spice Lattes from Cowboy Coffee on the way home.

A little after 5pm CDT tomorrow, Friday, the Boeing/NASA Starliner will undock from the ISS and head back to Earth. Hopefully, about 6 hours later, it will safely land at the White Sands Space Harbor.

Of course, the two astronauts, who rode it up to the ISS back in June, won’t be aboard. They’ll be safely ensconced aboard the ISS, waiting to come home on a SpaceX Crew Dragon next February.

Elsewhere in SpaceX news, the Polaris Dawn mission launch has been pushed back until this Saturday.

SpaceX’s Polaris Dawn commercial astronauts’ mission launch date moved again

This mission has a number of ‘firsts’ on its schedule.

1. It’s a completely private mission, with two men and two men.

2. It’s going into a polar orbit.

3. It will feature the first commercial spacewalk using SpaceX’s spacesuits.

The risks are serious as the crew will attempt to achieve the highest orbit of Earth ever recorded since the Apollo program and will pass through heavy radiation and risk potentially significant damage from small space rocks and debris.

During their multi-day mission to orbit, Dragon and the crew will participate in the first-ever extravehicular activity (EVA) by commercial astronauts wearing SpaceX-developed EVA suits. Additionally, they will conduct 36 research studies and experiments from 31 partner institutions designed to advance both human health on Earth and during long-duration spaceflight, and test Starlink laser-based communications in space

A Rough Night at Sea…

After finally falling asleep about 1 am,  we woke about 7:30.  It was a rough night.  People coughing all night, people snoring, people talking in their sleep, etc.

About 8 am we headed down to Deck 5 for breakfast at the Cafeteria,  stopping off to go outside on Deck 6,  for a great view of the ocean.

After breakfast,  we went to one of the many lounges to spend the morning.  Jan settled in to read and I found an outlet to plug in my laptop.

Our ferry,  the “Joseph and Clara Smallwood” is 587 feet long and can hold 1200 passengers and 350 cars,  RV’s,  and semi’s.   We’re 200 miles out in the North Atlantic,  and I have both WiFi Internet and cellphone service.  This ship is really something.

But being built back in the 1990’s, i.e. ‘pre-laptop’,  there are not enough electrical outlets in the lounges for everyone.

They were also showing movies on big-screen TV’s.  We watched ‘Night at the Museum’,  “Shrek II”, and others.

Around noon we headed back to the cafeteria for lunch of soup and sandwiches.  And then after lunch, we moved all our stuff down to Deck 5 so we would be closer to our truck on Deck 3 when the time came.

We docked about 2:30 pm and were called to our vehicles about 2:45.  We were told not to start our vehicles until it came our time to move,  and then we started up and moved out…not.

Actually,  I turned the key and only got a ‘click, click, click’.  Dead battery.

I still don’t know what the problem was.  None of my lights were left on.  Anyway,  I wasn’t the only one.  Two other vehicles needed a jump start, also.

Finally,  we were off the ship and on our way.

We decided to head south down the peninsular to drive what is known as the Irish Loop,  though we only did a half-loop since we wanted to get back to St John’s to get a hotel room before dark.

And I’m glad we did come back a little early,  because we had to try three hotels before we found a room.

While we were hunting hotels,  we saw Montana’s Steakhouse and thought we’d give it a try later.  And we did.  And it was good.

Fall is in the Air . . .

Fall is here, at least in northern Indiana. Yesterday’s high was 63 and then down to 50 last night. Today it made it up to about 68 with a low tonight of 58.

Of course, if it’s too cool for you here, you could try Yuma. It was 114 on Friday, and 109 yesterday.

But it’s a dry heat.  Of course, so is an oven.

About 11 this morning Jan and I headed over to Bob Evans for breakfast. As usual on a Sunday morning, there was a wait, but only about 5 minutes. Bob Evans has moved into their Fall menu so they’ve got their flavored cappuccino’s again. Really good.

After breakfast we drove over to the National New York Central Railroad Museum here in Elkhart.

They have a dining car set up and all ready to go for the restaurant they hope to open soon.

And here’s a display of signal lanterns ranging from the 1860’s to the present.

Maybe the most amazing thing they have there is this 8-foot-long toothpick model of a Pennsylvania K-4 Pacific locomotive.

It has over 420,000 toothpicks, 40 pounds of glue, and took 7 years to build. The brakes, wheels, tie rods, and windows actually move.

The builder, Terry Woodling, has built several other toothpick models, including a DC-3 with a 5-foot wingspan, a Huey helicopter, a touring motorcycle, and a Learjet with an 8-foot fuselage.

They also have a model railroad layout that’s under construction.

Outside in the freight yard, they have a number of old engines and railcars. The oldest locomotive is this L3A 4-8-2 Mohawk built in 1940, one of 25 in the series.

It ran until 1957 when the New York Central completed its transformation from steam to diesel.

They also had one of the first diesels on the NYC, an EMD E8. Built in 1953, it’s 70 feet long and weighs over 330,000 pounds.

This wooden boxcar probably dates from the 1920 – 1930’s, but according to the reporting marks, it was rebuilt in 1965, probably as a maintenance car, and then retired in 1975.

This tank car is somewhat newer, being built in 1952, rebuilt in 1977. and then retired in 1985. It’s really in good shape.

This caboose was built in 1963, and was in use until the 1980’s when most cabooses were retired from service due to their function being handled by more modern technology.

Across the tracks from the museum is the Elkhart train station. Built in 1900, it replaced one built in the 1880’s. It’s still in use today as a regular stop on the daily train from New York to Chicago and back.

A lot of the museum is still under construction and we look forward to visiting again next year to see how things are coming.

Leaving the museum and heading home, we stopped off at Ace Hardware to pick up some new bolts for my cargo bay doors, and then stopped at Martin’s for some cat food.

About 5:30 Jan and I drove over to Cracker Barrel for supper and then back to the rig for the night.

We’ve only got two more days here in Elkhart before we leave on Wednesday.

Labor Day . . .

We woke up this morning to beautiful Fall weather, and about 50 degrees. I don’t think it finally hit 60 until later in the afternoon. Nice!

After coffee and bagels, I worked on organizing stuff in the coach for a while, and then about 12:30 Jan and I headed over to Wal-Mart to pick up some groceries and other stuff.

Getting home about 2 and getting things put away, I set up Skype on my computer and waited for Lowell to call.

About 3pm Brandi SkypeCalled us and we spent about 15 minutes watching Landon play with his toys and run around the living room.

One thing we noticed when we saw him at the reunion a few weeks ago is that he’s not bald anymore. He’s actually got a lot of hair, but since it’s kind of white-blonde, it’s hard to see in photos. His mother Brandi’s hair was the same way when she was young too.

We’re really looking forward to seeing him again when we’re back in Houston right before Thanksgiving.

And here he is having his first Tookie’s hamburger. Tookie’s was/is a famous burger place in Seabrook, TX that had been around since the early 70’s. It was heavily damaged in Hurricane Rita in 2008 and never reopened, until just a couple of weeks ago. Took’em long enough.

Brandi said no matter when you go, there’s always a wait.

A little before 6 we headed out for dinner with Al Hesselbart. Al was leading us to a restaurant he likes, but when we got there it was closed for Labor Day. So after a quick conference, we ended up at our favorite local Mexican place, El Maguey, and it was as good as always.

And as usual, we sat around and talked for so long that it was almost 8:30 before we got home.

Rally Day 3

As usual, this morning started out with doughnuts and coffee at the Vendor Bldg., before Jan attended Ron and Brenda Spiedel’s seminar on “Green Cleaning Your RV”, and I headed back to the rig to finish up preparing my 10:30 seminar on “10+ Things Every RV’er Needs”.

The seminar went pretty well and we had about 50 people attending. Had a lot of questions and comments which is always good.

At 11:30 Jan and I met Milliard and Nancy Pierce at La Caretta for lunch. We first met them here at Celina last year and found out that they had been gate guarding. So at lunch today, we had a great time trading stories and gossiping about people in the gate guarding world we both knew. In fact we spent over two hours at lunch just talking.

Found’em . . .

Well, today was a little quieter on the gate than yesterday, with only 119 vehicles coming through, against yesterday’s 130.  Of course, that really means 238 vehicles, counting coming in and going out. But they’ve been bringing in house trailers for the new well, so we’ll be having people staying over pretty soon.

Another gate guard company is looking for a couple for a gate near Bristol, TX, about 30 miles southeast of Dallas. It pays $200 a day, which sounds great until you get to the kicker.

It’s a 600 vehicle a day gate!

So let’s see. $50 more a day than our $150, and you get to quadruple your workload. Sounds like a great deal to me. I wonder why they’re having trouble finding anyone?

In other news, I found my set of longer cables for the satellite dome, so Jan has TV again. The cables were right where I left them, but not where I remember leaving them. That seems to happen a lot lately. But the real culprit is the fact that before we left Houston I went through and reorganized all the basement bins in a logical fashion.

But apparently, what was logical then is not quite so logical now. That’s what I get for tidying things up.

Unlike a lot of gate guard couples, Jan and I don’t work 12 hour shifts. We find it much easier to split it up.

Jan works from 7am to 2pm, and brings out something for breakfast that we eat together. I’m scheduled to come back at 2pm, but usually it’s earlier and I bring out coffee.

So I work from 2pm to 6pm, and Jan brings out supper that we eat together. Jan then works from 6pm to 11pm, and I work from 11pm to 7am.

Wash, Rinse, Repeat.

So Jan works a 7 hour shift and a 5 hour shift, and I work an 8 and a 4. Works for us.

Today was a sad day. Dinner finished off the last of the Sonny’s BBQ we got in Pensacola, FL while we were staying at Gulf Shores, AL about a month ago. We went there twice and always bought extra to freeze.

But on a bright note, there’s a Rudy’s over in College Station, not too far away.

Summer’s Last Gasp?

Well, it was another quiet day in the oil patch, our part of it, at least. We had 7 vehicles come in and later leave. Most of it was the Swire water guys finishing with setting up the pumps and water lines feeding from the frack ponds.

But there were a couple of guys out in the back laying out and discing up the area where they’ll put the used mud. And that was about it. And we expect even less tomorrow, and if we’re lucky, maybe nothing on Monday.

So we’ll probably go out to dinner again Monday night, since it’ll probably be our last chance for a while.

Our days and nights have heated recently with temps in the mid-90’s in the daytime, and mid-70’s at night, while just a week ago it was low 90’s and mid-60’s.

But starting next Thursday, Fall may be here. According to the Weather Channel, we’re looking at a week of low to mid 80’s and high 50’s to low 60’s at night. At least that’s the forecast. We’ll see how it pans out.

One thing nice about this site is that the rig blocks us from those cold north winds that will sweep through. Much better than the last two years.

After our iced coffee this morning, I took a look at my ‘no 12 volts in the bathroom’ problem we came home to last night. As I suspected, I found a blown 20 amp ATC fuse like this in the panel at the bottom of the bed.

I’ve never had to open this 12 volt panel before, since I’ve never had a 12 volt problem before, so I was surprised to find it uses the larger ATC fuses, since everywhere else in the coach uses the smaller ATM fuses. The problem with this is that I don’t have any spare ATC fuses, just the ATM size. I checked the rest of the panel to see if there was one I could borrow, but no luck.

I did borrow one temporarily though, to be sure that it did fix the problem, and it did. Except for the light in the shower. It uses one of these LED bulbs and it wouldn’t come on.

I pulled the bulb out and checked the voltage at the socket and had 12 volts, so the bulb was the problem. But why?

That bulb gets left on as a night light, so it was on when we left for supper. The only thing I can figure is that the bulb shorted long enough to blow the fuse, and then opened. I say ‘opened’ because it had to to short to blow the fuse, but it had to then open, otherwise, it would have blown the new fuse when I plugged it in. I’ve got another of those bulbs, so I’ll have to get it out.

I’ll probably go into Carthage tomorrow to get some new fuses and also bring back lunch.

Brandi, Lowell, and Landon always spend Labor Weekend at the Woodlands Resort and Landon has a blast. Apparently he can even hula-hoop.

Leaving The Seat Up . . .

I had planned to sleep in this morning, I really did. But Karma had other ideas.

Turns out that just because Jan’s not here, doesn’t mean that Miss Karma doesn’t still plan on being fed at 7:30am like Jan does every morning. So her patience finally ran out about 9:30, and she jumped up on the bed and started BITING me.

One of the first things I did this morning (after feeding Karma) was try to get Jan out of Jury Duty. It seems like every year or so one of us gets a jury summons from Harris County. And we haven’t lived here since 2008.

The only thing I was able to do was to ask for disqualification due to not residing in Harris County. But I’ve done this before, and it never sticks. So I’ll probably have to just do it again next time.

I started to order something from Amazon this afternoon and have it delivered to my client’s office for working on his system. With 2 Day Prime delivery, I figured it would be there on Thursday so I could use it Friday. And Amazon said it would be delivered on Thursday, but on September 14th, not September 7th.

So I guess they’re still having problems with delivery to this area. We’ll see.

Looks like our forecasted cooler weather is coming through tomorrow right on schedule. Today’s high here in Conroe was 91 with tonight’s low of 68°. But then tomorrow’s high is only 84 and tomorrow night we’re looking at 58°.

Then day temps in the 80’s for at least the next week.

So Fall is here early?

A couple of microwave updates.

Concerning the tabletop Frigondas unit that both cooks and freezes, one reader says his already does this. It’s easy, he said. He just turns the the wall plug around and run the microwave in reverse. Works every time, he said.

Y’all give it a try and let me know how it works. My microwave just completely fixed itself and I don’t want to annoy it anymore.

I mentioned the other day how I had worked on it and fixed a persistent problem, but the light stayed on all the time. But since it worked now, I was going to just leave well enough alone.

Well, that worked out great, because I noticed this morning that now the light is going off and on just like it’s supposed to.

There seems to be a theory among wives that as soon as we slide that wedding band on her finger, our I.Q. drops 50 points and we are no longer able to feed and clothe ourselves, by ourselves. Instead we can now only function under our wife’s detailed guidance and instruction.

Now in one way or the other, I’ve been taking care of myself since I went off to military school when I was 15. And from then until I met Jan almost 4 years later, I managed to feed, bathe, and dress myself, by myself, without anyone’s assistance.

I’ve washed my own clothes, ironed my own clothes (yes, I can iron) and even bought my own clothes. But by Jan’s reckoning, I’m completely unable to take care of myself for the 3 days that she will be gone. So I got detailed instructions on every bit of food in the refrigerator, how to prepare it,  and how many seconds to set the microwave for. And even down to where the salt and pepper are in the cabinet.

It’s amazing I can even breathe on my own. Of course with Jan gone, I can leave the seat up . . . on purpose.

Why Won’t They Call Me Back?

I put in another call to RV Mobile Lube again this morning, and again got no response.

I might have gotten a quicker response from them if I hadn’t told them why I was calling, but then if I hadn’t told them what would they know to come out and fix? So I’ll keep calling.

While I’m waiting to hear tomorrow, maybe, I’ll get back on looking at my generator problem. I haven’t had a chance to look at it since the 4th of July period when we were visiting my relatives in Athens, AL.

As I mentioned when it happened when we were on our way up to Illinois this past June. It worked perfectly when we left Santa Fe on our way to Breaux Bridge, LA, and never skipped a beat along the way. And it cranked up and ran the next morning and also ran fine . . . for about 15 minutes, quitting before we made it on to I-10.

And now it just cranks over, not even trying to catch.

I’ve done the fuel pump test, so it doesn’t seem to be a lack of fuel. And I was checking out the generator actuator relay, but I didn’t get any further than that. So tomorrow I’ll be back on the phone with Onan going back over things and getting some more ideas.

See I Told You It Was Crows . . .

Jan and I headed out a little before noon this morning, with our first stop at the Black Bear Diner out on I-45 for lunch. BBD is presently our new favorite place, but probably just the latest one. At least until something newer comes along.

Though they were busy, it wasn’t like last Sunday and we got seated immediately.

I went with something new that I saw on the menu last visit, The Bacon Cheeseburger Salad, with their delicious Bacon Ranch Dressing.

With a Burger Patty, Bacon, Cheese, Dill Pickle Chips, Tomatoes, and Red Onions, WOW! was it good. And very filling and very Keto.

Finishing up we drove on up to the Webster area so Jan could get her toesies done while I drove over to the Sam’s/Wal-Mart for gas and a few groceries. I was happy to see gas at Sam’s now down to $1.98/gal,

As I was leaving the Wal-Mart I saw a Loomis Armored Car out in the middle of the lot surrounded by about 6 police cars and a couple of black pickups. And there was also a news helicopter circling overhead, though I couldn’t tell which station.

Something was obviously going on, but I never found anything online about what it was.

Picking up Jan when she was done, we headed up to the Katy area to drop Jan off at Brandi’s so she can team up with Lowell’s parents for Grandparent’s Day tomorrow at Landon’s school. Then I came home and then will go back up Saturday afternoon for Landon’s Birthday Party.

I’m still not sure what my next step is on my oil leak problem. I’ll probably crawl underneath the rig tomorrow afternoon with my Panasonic camera and get extreme close-ups from several different angles of the center bolt that is supposedly holding the adapter in place.

There is some sort of ‘locking’ pin there but I can’t tell what it’s supposed to do.

I’ve already resigned myself to the fact that I’m probably going to have to put it all back together so I can crank up and lower the rig down to actually reach the adapter with my hand.

And then of course I’ll have to take it all apart again to try and actually fix it.

I guess because I posted the blog about crows stealing my chrome sockets, this article showed up in our FaceBook timeline.

A Big Chair . . .

Brandi, Lowell, Landon, and Landon’s BFF, Sophie, are spending Labor Day Weekend up at The Woodlands, north of Houston, something they’ve done several other years. This is one of the reasons that Jan has been doggie-sitting at their home in Katy.

Hot-Wired and Hot Water . . .

I was outside about 10:30 this morning to start pulling the old water heater out of its cubbyhole.

I had already disconnected the water lines and the power wires inside, so after I loosened the gas line outside and removed the 16 screws holding the unit to the rig, I started trying to pull it out.

And it would not budge. Not even a wiggle.

And when I tried to stick a screwdriver in between the heater and the wall, I found the problem. Besides the 16 screws, they decided to actually GLUE the unit into the opening. With a very strong glue, too.

So I started prying the sides in so I could cut through the adhesive.

Finally then I was able to wiggle and pry, and eventually got the unit out of the hole.

The plywood platform came right out and then I did my best to clean and dry the area out. But before I could go any further I needed to move the inside water connections over to the new unit.

No problem removing the elbow on the cold inlet, but when I tried to remove the piping on the hot outlet, the 1/2” plastic coupling just came apart.

So since it was about lunchtime, it was off to Home Depot by way of Gator’s for lunch. Turns out Home Deport didn’t stock the plastic couplings and was out of the brass ones, so I bought a valve coupling instead, which will also let me isolate the water heater from the system if needed in the future. It was a little longer, but there was enough flex in the piping to handle it.

My next problem was that it seems that the new Styrofoam-covered heater is slightly larger and less squishable than the old fiber-insulated and covered-in-cardboard unit. In fact when I gave up for today (I was just tired of fooling with it) there was still about 2” of the unit sticking outside the rig. But I wanted to be sure it actually worked before I went any further with it.

So I hooked up the water and power, filled the heater with water, and then turned it on. And 30 minutes later, NO hot water.

No power was getting to the heating element. Then a lot more research showed that this unit requires 12VDC through a remote switch to get it to work on 120VAC. So to get us hot water I pretty much hot-wired it directly while I figured out how to get 12VDC in the water heater area, since it’s only got 120VAC there. But that’s for tomorrow.

Tonight we have hot water.

Happy Labor Day . . .

Brandi, et al., including Landon’s BFF, Sophie, got home a little before 4pm and had a great time. They were at the Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine, TX near Dallas for the Labor Day weekend.

So now Brandi has to see how her Federal Jury summons tomorrow turns out, before I know when I’ll get my Jan back. But hopefully tomorrow.

I’ve mentioned before that Sophie, Landon’s BFF, got her ‘growth spurt’ before Landon, actually not that unusual.

Stay Calm And Don’t Panic . . .

In an apparent opening salute to my birthday the next day, the US government will be conducting a test of the National Emergency Alert System on Oct. 4th around 2:20 pm EST

That’s the date the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Federal Communications Commission are scheduled to test their National Wireless Emergency Alert System, which will issue to every television, cellphone, and radio. The run-through will actually consist of two parts, the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA). The former will transmit to radios and TVs, while the latter will issue to all consumer cell phones, according to FEMA’s announcement earlier this month.

Individuals with phones in range of a cell tower will receive a message to the effect of, “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.” Meanwhile, phones set to Spanish will receive the same bulletin in users’ default language. This beauty is a 55-foot 2021 Space Craft semi travel trailer “created by one of our carnival customers,” according to the company’s YouTube video. Can you imagine towing this thing around? It dwarfs the diesel pushers in the background and is essentially twice as long as a good-sized camper trailer. We imagine you’d want to spend more time parked than on the road, if possible. We counted three separate slide-outs on one side and two entry doors (separated by two slide) on the other. The roof, which could home a ton of solar capability, has three air condition units.

Price? Somewhere north of $1 million. And I wouldn’t be surprised if there are not some states where you can’t legally tow it due to the length.

Oh, and of course, you’ll need the matching Freightliner to tow it.

Brandi, Lowell, and Landon spent the long Labor Day weekend up in OK visiting with Lowell’s parents. And though they went up with two dogs, they came home with three.

It seems he had been hanging around Lowell’s parent’s house and now it seems he’s found a new home here in Katy.

Looks like he made himself right at home on the ride back to Houston.

Our first clue was when Brandi sent over this photo, saying, “Count The Dogs.”

Well, Jan and I recognized Baxter and Jack, but we wondered about the one in the back.

Now we know.

And since everyone will be bringing their dogs to our big birthday pool party bash at Brandi’s this Saturday, that means we’ll have 8 dogs in the house at one time.

Salt Lick . . .

First off, Jan and I want to wish my long-time childhood friend Claudia Coleman a Happy, Happy Birthday. And by ‘long-time’, I mean since we were 9 or 10, I think.

One of our favorite restaurants in one of our favorite places.

When we were up in Fredericksburg, TX earlier this year, we were happy to find out that one of our favorite BBQ places, Salt Lick BBQ, is opening a new location there.

The Salt Lick BBQ restaurant will cover 9,000 square-feet, featuring patio space and all the restaurant’s signature food items. The Sycamore will also house Salt Lick Cellars, a tasting room for the brand’s wine, according to the release.

We’ve been eating at the original location up in Driftwood, TX, just outside Austin for years.

How could you not like a BBQ place like this, with the pit in the middle of the restaurant?

In fact, Brandi and Lowell had their wedding reception there in 2010.

Tomorrow Jan and I planned making the drive down to Galveston for lunch, hopefully at Sunflower Cafe. The reason I say ‘hopefully’ is that with all the rain and flooding they’ve had down there, we might not able to actually get in the place.

There are really deep gutters in the area, and with heavy rains the sidewalks leading into the place can have 3” or 4” water covering them.

“Ferry cross the Mers… uh…North Atlantic…”

Today was our last day in Louisbourg for a while.

Tonight at 11:00 pm we catch the car ferry for the 15 hour, 325 mile trip to Argentia, Newfoundland.

However, unlike some RV’ers, we’re not taking our coach over.  Jan said “No way I’m putting my home on a ferry.  Those things can sink. I’ve seen it on the news.”

So we’re leaving the rig in Louisbourg and taking the truck on the ferry, and we’ll stay at B&B/motels for the 3-4 days we’re in Newfoundland.

We went out for breakfast about 10 am and ended up sitting next to another RVing couple from VA.  Gene and Chris had just spent two months in Newfoundland and gave us a lot of good tips.  Hopefully we’ll meet up again sometime.  Nice people!

About 3 pm we left for North Sydney, Nova Scotia, where the ferry dock is.

We wanted to drive around the area,  do some last-minute shopping,  get gas, and then eat supper before we boarded.

Although we didn’t sail until 11 pm,  we had to be checked in and in line by 9:30, or we would lose our reservations.  And, after taking care of all our chores, we ended up getting in line about 7:30, along with a lot of other people who were already there.

After entering the ship on Deck 1, we drove up a ramp and parked on Deck 3.

By about 10:30 pm we were up on the passenger decks with our stuff. You have to bring everything with you that you’ll need for the trip from your vehicle because you’re not allowed to go back to it during the voyage.

We had reserved two seats in the sleeping area that reclined and had footrests. It turns out to have been a mistake because they were very uncomfortable. We would have been better off to have just stayed in the regular seating area. Those seats also reclined but didn’t have footrests. But they were much more comfortable.

After grabbing a late-night muffin snack in the cafeteria, we settled in for the night.

New Doors

Now there’ll be no more pointing and snickering.

Michele Henry of Phoenix Commercial Paint did a fantastic job on my doors. The finish looks like it’s a foot deep. Now I may have to have the rest of the coach done next year so it matches the beautiful new doors.

Michele said people are already making appointments to have their coaches repainted a year from now. So if you’re still thinking about getting your rig painted get your reservation in now.

But before I picked up the doors from Michele, Jan and I headed over to Mishawaka to pick up our prescriptions and some other stuff at Sam’s Club.

While we were there I saw these great new fold-up chairs. They’re really big and comfortable, and have 6 cup holders and an insulated cooler built in. They come in red or black, and are about $100. You could really get lazy in one of these, but I’m not sure it would fit in one of my bays. These are big chairs!

As we were leaving Mishawaka, we decided to grab lunch at one of the many roadside BBQ stands set up this weekend. There was a Notre Dame football game right down the road in South Bend, and a lot of churches set up stands along the road.

We had ribs and rib tips, macaroni salad, and bread, and let me tell you, Deacon White (the name on the stand) makes some fine BBQ, and a really good sauce.

Then, just as we were finishing up, Michele called and said she was at the shop and I could come over.

I made two trips for the four doors so there would be no chance of them banging together. Wouldn’t want to spoil Michele’s nice work.

After I got back I got them installed pretty quickly. They went back on pretty easy, and only took about 15 – 20 minutes.

And, as I said, Boy do they look great.

About 5 pm Jan and I drove over to Middlebury to eat at Das Dutchman Essenhaus, a great restaurant with somewhat of an Amish/Country theme. The food is great and the pies are fantastic.

Many of the waitresses are Amish, and they have Amish buggy rides in the large parking lot. And they certainly needed the large lot today because the place was jam-packed. We had to wait for over 20 minutes to get seated but it was well worth it.

You can get your meal either off the menu, or order it family style where they just keep bringing you food ‘til you pop.

Having popped the last time we were there, we just ordered off the menu this time.

Coming home, we stopped off at Walmart to get some groceries, and then it was home for the night.

Bad Dog . . .

After a very nice day in Elkhart, about 7 pm we headed over to Five Guys Burger and Fries for dinner. Burgers were delicious, fries not as good as Red Robin.

Getting home, I got a little more done on cleaning out the bins before calling it an evening.

I think we’re finally in the throes of Fall. The low tonight is supposed to be 52, the high tomorrow 65, and a low tomorrow night of 46 degrees.

Rally Day 2

First off, Brandi sent over this video of Landon playing the drum set his cousin Piper gave him for his birthday a week or so ago.

The mystery is, where did he learn to sit down and play the drums like that. Brandi says no one showed him how. He just sits down, puts his foot on the bass drum pedal and wails away.

We started this morning’s rally agenda with coffee and doughnuts about 8:30, and then Jan and I attended Ron and Brenda Spiedel’s seminar on remodeling your RV. Jan and I got a lot of good ideas for possible upgrades to our rig.

Then at 10:30 I gave my first seminar on Computer Q & A. At the other computer-related seminars I’ve given in the past, I’ve noticed that everyone had a lot of general computer questions, so I decided to have a seminar of nothing but questions from the audience, and hopefully answers from me.

As it turned out we had a little over 20 people and it seemed to go well.

After lunch I ran some errands and then Jan and I napped until a little before 4pm when we headed down for a couple of more seminars. I was going to check out the ‘Electrical Troubleshooting with a Multimeter’ seminar.

But the instructor didn’t show up, so I got dragooned into doing the lecture. So I grabbed a couple of meters and a few other things and off I went. As it turned out, it went pretty well and everyone seemed to enjoy it.

A little after 5 Jan and I headed into Celina to have supper at C-Town Wings, a really good restaurant in the downtown area. Tonight they had All You Can Eat Boneless Wings and Fries. Our kind of place. Well, mind, anyway.

Then at 7pm things got rolling again with more door prizes, and wrapped up with a performance by “One More Time”, a husband and wife duo that has performed at a lot of rallies and always do a great job.

They’re amazingly versatile, and both have great voices. We heard everything from Elvis, Frank Sinatra, Nancy Sinatra,

We certainly look forward to hearing them again sometime.

Chicken . . .

No, not that kind. The one in Alaska.

You know, the one that’s named after the State Bird of Alaska, the ptarmigan. The only problem was that when the town got its first Post Office in 1902, nobody could agree on how to spell ‘Ptarmigan’ so they went with Chicken instead.

Everyone could spell that.

Today’s blog is about Chicken for two reasons. It’s in the news, and we were there in Chicken 5 years ago today.

It’s in the news because a couple of weeks ago an EPA SWAT team (huh?) descended on the 17 residents of Chicken to check for Clean Water Act violations. (once again, huh?) The heavily armed, body-armored wearing EPA agents swarmed over the many small family mining claims in the area, to check their gold mine holding ponds. There were more agents than residents.

They said they were heavily armed because the Alaskan State Troopers told them there was “rampant drug and human trafficking going on the area”. The State Troopers deny they ever said any such thing. I think some people just wanted to play with their shiny new toys.

And any ‘trafficking’ would be pretty obvious. There’s only one road through there, the Taylor Highway. There’s nowhere else to go. To even get to Chicken, you drive 75 miles from Tok, on a lane and a half wide, gravel road, trying to avoid the moose running across right in front of you.

Tok is the first Alaskan town you come to after you enter Alaska on the Alaskan Highway, and itself only has about 1200 people. It’s too small to even have a Wal-Mart.

It’s that small.

From Tok to Fairbanks is over 200 miles, and to Anchorage is over 300 miles. So these agents, made up of EPA, the FBI, Coast Guard (more huh?), Department of Defense (even more huh?), the Alaska Department of Public Safety and the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, had to drive 300 miles to Tok, then 75 miles to Chicken, and apparently, another 40 miles out to Boundary, the last town before you enter Canada.

All for nothing. No charges, state or federal, have been filed. Your tax dollars at work.

And concerning all the “rampant drug and human trafficking going on in the area”, like I said, there’s nowhere to go. If it was coming from Tok, the only place it can go is through two border crossings into Canada. And the same two border crossings in reverse.

There’s only one road in and out.

Head’em Up, Move’em Out . . .

Well, things got a lot busier today. Yesterday we had 61 vehicles through the gate. Today we had 130. And it’s going to get even busier.

We were originally told this was going to be a frack pond.

WRONG!

This is a new pad site for a drill rig that will be coming in tomorrow or Saturday. So that should liven things up. AND we have a frack starting up sometime soon.

Last year on the frack site where we were at, we had two days of 300 vehicles coming through the gate. That will keep you jumping, believe me.

But with the bad comes the good, hopefully.

Drill Rigs and Fracking usually mean catering trucks coming through. Which usually means we eat really well. So here’s hoping.

Here’s what our setup looks like.

The tree provides a lot of shade, enough so that the A/C’s actually cycle on and off during the day. Imagine that. Of course as I said yesterday, the tree also ‘shades’ our view of the DirecTV satellite, so it’s not all fun and games. And I still haven’t found my longer cables yet. I haven’t needed them in several years, so I may have tucked them away really good.

One thing nice about this site is that we have our own trash trailer so I don’t have to schlep bags of garbage down to one of the pad sites. And this morning the Company Man sent us a load of pea gravel to cover up the muddy spots around our site. Very nice.

Something else nice is that the water trucks come by 2-3 times a day. Really keeps the dust down.

About 2:30 this morning I was in the middle of a cow stampede. About 2 dozen cows came running down the small farm road to our left, crossed the main road, and then ran along the dirt embankment in front, and disappeared into the woods. Don’t know what it was, but something sure had them spooked.

For dinner tonight Jan fixed a great batch of Nachos, with a new twist. Nachos are one of our favorite ‘gate foods’ and we have them a couple of nights a week.

Normally Jan makes them using Tortilla Chips, Jalapeno Bean Dip, Shredded Mexican Cheese, and Jalapeno Slices. But she discovered we were out of the Bean Dip, so she opened a can of Hot Chili Beans, mashed them up some, and spread that on the chips. Covered with Shredded Cheese, and Jalapenos, and sprinkled with cumin, chili powder, and ground habanero spice, and popped in the microwave, you’ve got a great meal.

Jan was Giddy . . .

All afternoon.

I put in a call to Jamie, our GGS supervisor, this morning to update him on our supposed upcoming schedule here on the gate. I also asked him, that since we had been a 12 hour gate all this week, if it would be OK if Jan and I took a couple of hours off this evening to have dinner in town and do the weekly shopping together. I told him that we’d already cleared it with the landowner, and he had even recommended a place to eat.

Jamie said, “no problem”, so we were good to go, and as I said, Jan was giddy all afternoon. It’ll be her first time to leave the gate since we got here August 25th. She did say that this gate is so nice, so far, that she’s really not getting gate fever like at past locations.

With something to look forward to, the afternoon went pretty fast, and Jan came out about 5:30 to relieve me so I could come in and take a shower before we headed out. While I was inside, the last vehicle left. In fact they’d been the last vehicle since 2:30 when everyone else left.

I had been checking with everyone else as they left today, to find out if they were working this weekend. And although as I mentioned before, some are off until Tuesday, it looks like a few will be working this weekend. Bummer!

It does seem like most or all will be off on Monday, so we may try another night out then.

We did close the main gate as we left, and I set it so that I would know if anyone had opened it while we were gone.

We had planned to eat at KJ’s Whistle Stop Restaurant, the one recommended by our landowner, but we couldn’t find the place. It’s certainly not where Yelp, Google Maps, etc., says it is. They’re supposed to have a really good Friday Night Buffet, and fantastic pies for dessert. Jan later got directions from a lady at Wal-Mart, and I guess it’s moved, because it’s nowhere near where the Internet thinks it is.

So instead, we ended up at the Longhorn Country Restaurant right on the main drag. We’d been wanting steak, so this worked out fine.

We both started out with salads, and it was obvious that the dressings were homemade. Very good salad.

While Jan had a Sirloin, I had my usual Ribeye, which was really great.

What the photo doesn’t show is how thick this steak was, over an inch in places. The other thing that made this really delicious was how hot it was. I always get my steak medium rare, and most times it’s plenty warm, but not hot. But this one was still sizzling when they brought it out. I assume that they cooked it until it was rare, and then put it over the flames, because the outside edges were charred just like I like it.

Somebody here knows how to cook a steak.

For dessert, we splurged and didn’t split one. But in hindsight, we should have, as we were both too full afterward. But it was a ‘good’ full.

Me, I can’t pass up Bread Pudding, so that’s what I got.

Jan loved her cheesecake, and after trying a bite, I could see why. But I was so-so on the Bread Pudding. It tasted delicious, but I was put off by the fact that it had peanuts in it.

Not crushed and sprinkled on top, which might have been good, but there were actually peanut halves cooked into the pudding, which gave them that slightly mushy texture, like boiled peanuts, which I do not like at all.

I think next time, and based on the steak, there will be a next time if possible, I will have the Cheesecake.

One thing I really also liked on the table was the buckets.

Every restaurant should have a bucket on the table. No, not the one with the peanuts in it, although that was good, but the empty one.

Since there are no ashtrays in restaurants anymore, you have no place to put your trash. You know, all the trash like empty sugar packets, empty cracker wrappers, used lemons, butter pat papers, jelly containers, even the little wrappers on your silverware. It all just piles up in your own personal trash heap.

After that great dinner, it was on to Wal-Mart for groceries. Like a lot of small towns, this Wal-Mart SuperCenter is a ‘mini’ SuperCenter, I.e. it has a full grocery department, but it only has one entrance, not two like the regular ones.

The other part of ‘mini’ is the selection of stuff. It seems to only be about 2/3 of normal. So you may not find a particular brand or size that you find at other ones.

We first encountered these ‘mini’ ones down in Kenedy, TX a couple of years ago. One guy shopping there said, “It’s like a real Wal-Mart, only smaller.” And he was certainly right.

Getting home we found the gate we left closed was undisturbed, so that was good. But getting back into the rig, we found a problem.

We have no 12 volts in the bathroom so the overhead light and the shower light don’t work. We have it on one side in the kitchen and on the other side in the bedroom, but not in the bath.

The water pump and the water heater still work, but the bathroom vent fan doesn’t. And for that matter, neither does the vent fan in the kitchen. So I guess that’s a problem for tomorrow.

Probably a fuse, but who knows? Just part of the RV life.

¿Cuál es tu nombre?

Today begins our 3rd week here at Blue Moon Gate, another slow day with only 37 vehicles coming through our gate, just a few more than yesterday’s low count.

I spent part of the afternoon working on our bell system, trying to fix a leakage problem. Gate Guard Services supplies us with one of those old-fashioned bells like they used to have at gas stations a while back.

Lengths of rubber hose are laid out across the entrance and exits and are connected to a bell. When a vehicle drives over the hose, the increase in air pressure in the hose causes the bell to ring. The only problem with this is that after a couple of weeks of being run over by 80,000-pound truckloads of oil rig stuff, the hoses are either so flattened that they don’t generate enough air pressure change, or they’re just plain leaking.

Then I have to splice in sections of new hose, but for some reason, I’m still having a problem with the one that alerts us that a vehicle is leaving the pad. So I may just set up one of my Mighty Mule Driveway Alarms to fix that problem once and for all.

I mentioned yesterday about the new, ‘better’ WiFi system being installed on the pad, since the Company Man was going to let us use it. I noticed that the datacom people had put a couple of antennas up on a pole, and when I got a closer look today, they’re the same Wilson directional antennas that I use on my Wilson booster system.

And I may still need to set mine up, since the new, ‘better’ system only gives me one bar of signal and my devices won’t stay connected. So we’ll see.

The high note of the day was that we got fed again, this time with a setup in the Safety trailer with a serve-yourself spread. They had Shredded Brisket, Pulled Pork, Potato Salad, Beans, and buns laid out, and you make your own.

I went down and made Jan and I both a sandwich of each, and a big serving of Potato Salad. I didn’t get any Beans because the Styrofoam containers they furnished didn’t have any divisions in them, so it would have just all run together. It was only later in one of those ‘Doh!’ moments that I realized that I should have just spooned the Beans into another container.

I made the sandwiches big enough, and thick enough that we just ate half of each one, so we’ll have another meal tomorrow.

And it was really good BBQ, too.

About 3 we had another squall line come through, giving us about 30 minutes of heavy rain, thunder, and lightning. And the lightning part means the rig shuts down for the duration, and everyone goes inside.

I guess you can’t be too careful when you’re working on a 200-foot-tall lightning rod.

I have been constantly amazed over our 5 years of gate guarding how many drivers don’t speak English. I mean, not even enough to understand, “What’s your name?”.

So I have to resort to ¿Cuál es tu nombre? ¿Primero? ¿Apellido?

That’s “What’s your name? First? Last (or Surname)?”

Luckily we lived in Colombia, SA when I was a kid, so I can normally stumble through making myself understood. I do have to be careful sometimes because Colombian Spanish is not the same as Mexican Spanish which is not the same as Spain Spanish. And each one has its own idioms.

For example, you’ve probably at times had Pico de Gallo at a Mexican restaurant. Well, ‘Pico de Gallo’ translates to ‘rooster beaks’. Supposedly it’s called that because of the little pieces of red tomatoes and white onions in the mix. Of course it really could be rooster beaks, I guess.

And don’t even get me started on Portuguese. It’s just enough like Spanish to get you either slapped or shot, depending on the situation.

Too Pooped To Blog . . .

Jan and I headed for Katy about 10 this morning. No hurricane high-water and next-to-no traffic.

After dropping Jan off at Brandi’s, I drove on down to Clear Lake to check in on my client’s office. And suddenly felt like Brer Rabbit meeting up with the Tar Baby. Everything was down.

But that’s a story for tomorrow because I didn’t get home until almost 10pm and I’m too pooped to blog tonight.

That Was It . . .

With the weather cooperating this morning I went outside and top off the rig’s engine oil with 3 gallons of Shell Rotella 15W-40.

Then I laid down a big sheet of plastic sheeting under the engine to catch any leakage so I could visually confirm the leak, and also protect the gravel.

Back inside, I raised the bed cover and then cranked up the engine and let it run at high idle (950 rpm) for about 30 minutes. Then I shut it down and went outside to take a look. And here’s what I found.

About 1/2 cup in 30 minutes.

So next I crawled underneath to take a look, and found this.

It’s definitely coming down from the filter, so I put in a call to RV Mobile Lube to come out and take a look.

It could be a defective filter, or a bad installation. But I’ll them figure it out.

Later, about 1:30, Jan and I headed out, with our first stop at the nearby Los Ramirez Mexican Restaurant for lunch. We first ate here about 10 days ago, and were amazed at how good the food was, and how CHEAP it was.

And y’all know how much I like CHEAP!  And CHEAP and GOOD is even better.

And since it was so good the first time we did it exactly the same as last time. Jan got the Pechuga Rellena with a Grilled Chicken Breast stuffed with Grilled Shrimp and Broccoli on a bed of rice with Charro Beans and half a sliced Avocado.

Our next stop was at a Capital One branch to get some papers notarized and check out some account details. Then we made a drop-off at the Salvation Army and an Amazon package pick-up at my client’s.

And after a P.O. stop we got home about 4:30. Another busy day.

I’m Glad I Called . . .

But I’m Still Not Sure.

After making up a bunch of Black Electrode Cords,

that were needed for orders, I put a call into Cummins Tech Support to seek more help with getting my rig’s Oil Filter Adapter off so I can replace the gasket and hopefully fix my reoccurring oil leak.

I was connected with a really nice young lady named Whitney who spent about 40 minutes with me trying to track down my problem.

Finally after leaving me on hold for about 20 minutes so she could track an ‘old-time’ tech, as she referred to him, she came back and asked if I had removed the center hose connection.

I took that to mean the center ‘bolt’ up inside the adapter.

I had wondered about that when I was looking up at it, but it doesn’t really look like it’s a bolt head, but a shaft with a locking pin of some sort. So I asked her to email me the tech bulletin for it and I’d take a look.

And now that I’ve seen it, I’m still not sure.

Looking closer I still don’t see any sign of bolt edges, and looking over the bulletin, it doesn’t seem to apply to my engine. Or at least it doesn’t look like the layout of my engine.

So I’ll have to get under the rig and take a closer look, and get some close-up photos with my big camera. And I may have to put everything back together and lower the rig. When I raised it this past Monday I lifted the rig up to about the height needed to replace the filter, but as it turns out, it’s really too high for me to work on the adapter. Unless I grow extra-long orangutan arms.

But I can’t lower the rig without cranking it up, and I can’t crank up without pulling the filter, putting the bolts back in the adapter, then filling the filter with oil and putting it back on.

But I may end up doing that. We’ll have to see.

Tomorrow afternoon I’m taking Jan up to Brandi’s so she can be there for Landon’s Grandmother’s Day. It’s kind of a family tradition that both grandmothers take Landon out on the day before his party and spend the day with him.

I’ll come home and then go back up Saturday for his actual party.

Unless It Was A Monday . . .

Well, I was back on the phone with both Spartan and American Coach this morning trying to reconcile the different information I’m getting from each of them. In many cases, the schematics I’m getting from each of them of the same system don’t agree with each other.

And then there’s things like this.

Now, I’ve only been dabbling in electronics for about 60 years, but I’m pretty sure that that relay is never going to work. There needs to be a power source in there somewhere.

One thing I’ve run into over the years working on RV’s is finding where things are actually located in the rig. Years ago I was helping a friend troubleshoot a problem with the brake lights on his 2005 Winnebago Vectra.

The brake bar light up high on the rig worked fine but the actual brake lights didn’t. So I downloaded all the schematics and found a relay that looked like it could be causing the problem. So I went looking for it. And looked. And looked. And looked.

Giving up, I finally put in a call to Winnebago Tech Support. And here’s how it went.

“Well, if it was built on a Thursday, then Larry liked to mount the relay here, but if it was Jerry then he liked to put it there.”

“And Jim liked to put liked to put it over there . . . unless it was a Monday and he was a little hungover, then he would put it back there.”

And yes, that’s literally how the conversation went.

Can you imagine if cars were built the same way?

Since my friend wanted to get on the road, I built up a relay circuit box to drive the brake lights directly from the brake bar light and he was on his way.

I heard from him several years later that when he was having some other work done on the rig, they found the missing relay hanging from a socket underneath the dashboard, nowhere near where it was supposed to be. And it was bad.

Monterey’s Is Back . . .

After getting somewhat caffeinated this morning I started checking out what I was going to have to do to get my old Atwood water heater out of its hole in the wall and the new one in its place.

Inside looked to be pretty easy.

The two water line connections were easily loosened, and it would just be a matter of changing out the 3 power connections, using new wire nuts, of course. And as far as I can tell the unit is just sitting on the plywood platform and not fastened down.

I may have to fiddle with the water piping though since I’m not sure if the inlet/outlets match up between the two units. But it shouldn’t be a real problem.

Outside it was a little more difficult. There are just the wires for the 12VDC that feeds the gas part of the water heater, and the gas connection.

Since the gas was turned off in the rig I wanted to just loosen the fitting to forestall any later problems.

Problem!

I could not loosen the fitting. Either the copper tubing to the left of the fitting started to bend, or the elbow going into the gas valve started to loosen. Even rapping on the fitting didn’t help. So after messing with it for a while, I sprayed it with PB Blaster and moved on to unpacking the water heater.

At first glance after opening the box, it looks like it’s packed in Styrofoam, wrapped in bubble-wrap, and held together with plastic straps.

But the Styrofoam is actually the insulation around the water heater, and the straps just hold it all together. I wonder though how many people have cut the straps and removed the Styrofoam thinking it was part of the packing material.

I almost did.

I begin to wish that there had been some Styrofoam packing materials, rather than just the bubble-wrap, because when I lifted the unit out of the box, a loose screw fell out on the patio.

Turns out that the loose screw that I’m pointing to near the center came out of the heat deflector vent up at the top and also made the green wire ground connection. Easily fixable and not really a problem.

But the unit is dented at both the top right and bottom right, and the gas valve piping should not be at an angle like that. But the shipping box is in perfect shape, with not a dent or mark on it, making me wonder if it went in the box this way.

The dents are really just cosmetic and won’t show, and I think I can straighten out the gas line, but I won’t know if it actually works until I install it. Which I’m going to go ahead and do.

But I am going to contact the 3rd party seller on Amazon and register a claim in case there is a problem with it.

So we’ll see how it goes tomorrow.

About 2pm we headed out to have lunch at Los Ramirez and then, after a stop at a local lumber supply place for a tube of caulk for the water heater door panel, we drove up the feeder toward the HEB on FM646, and were happily surprised to find that after 4 years, and Hurricane Harvey, our local Monterey’s Little Mexico was finally open.

I say ‘surprised’ because their sign indicated that they wouldn’t be open until next week. And though we normally only have one real meal a day, we decided to come back about 6pm for a light dinner.

When we got there we found a 30-minute wait and a full parking lot. And unlike other Monterey’s this one has a completely new look, with really nothing indicating it is a Mexican restaurant. No flags, no banners, no streamers, no multi-colored lights. Just the open, industrial look that seems to be popular nowadays.

But the food was as good as always. I got my usual bowl of Chicken Tortilla Soup,

Really good, and we’ve already decided we’re going back on Tuesday.

Getting back home about 7pm, I found that the PB Blaster had done its thing, and I finally was able to loosen the gas fitting. So it looks like tomorrow’s changeout is on.

Got The Bleu’s . . .

About 1:30pm I drove over to our local Lowe’s to pick up some hardware for a project I’m working on, and then coming home, I stopped off at the Whataburger to pick up one of their new Bacon Bleu Cheeseburgers and a large Fry to go.

This ranks right up there as one of my two favorite burgers. The other one being the PB&J Bacon Cheeseburger at Texas Huddle.

Now all I need to do is to get Texas Huddle to add Bleu Cheese to their PB&J Burger. Or to get Whataburger to add PB&J to their Bleu Cheese Burger.

Or both.

Rob, our park owner, officially took possession of the adjoining property just south of us on September 1st, where he’s planning to add more RV sites. But the previous owners seemed to have left their trailer behind, and I was wondering if he was going to have it hauled away. However I’ve heard that the success in moving old trailers like this is somewhat sketchy.

But yesterday I noticed that all the doors and windows had been removed.

Today Didn’t Quite Work Out . . .

At least like we had planned.

We had planned to meet our friend Barbara for lunch at Schafer’s, and then follow her over to her new apartment to get her Internet/TV/Roku set up.

But things started to go downhill when we realized that Schafer’s is closed on Monday’s, even Labor Day holiday Monday’s. So after some back and forth we ended up at the Jimmy Changas over on I-45.

Of course it was as good as always, and it looks like they’re all ready for Dia De Muertos, the Mexican Day of The Dead.

Usually celebrated November 1st and 2nd, “the multi-day holiday involves family and friends gathering to pay respects and to remember friends and family members who have died. These celebrations can take a humorous tone, as celebrants remember funny events and anecdotes about the departed.”

So after spending a good bit of time catching on things since we were last together back in February, we followed Barb over to her new apartment where I started trying to get things set up. And having done this a number of times before, I’ve learned to start at the beginning. And that would be the Xfinity/Comcast WiFi Modem. And that’s where things ground to a halt.

I had a lot of flashing lights on it, never a good sign, and when I tried to WiFi connect to it, I found that, though I could connect, there was no there there. In other words, no Internet. So I spent the next hour or so on the phone with Xfinity Tech Support, a guy named Shawn who, strangely enough, had a very heavy Indian accent.

Barb had picked up the modem just a couple of days ago at the local Xfinity store where they supposedly set up her account and told her all she had to do was just plug it into power and the ‘F’ connector on the wall.

Well, No.

So we went round and round, trying to activate the modem (for an additional $100 ‘activation’ fee. Wonder what that is in Rupees?) before ‘Shawn’ finally admitted that there was a problem somewhere and scheduled a Service Tech for 9-11 am this Thursday.

We’ll see.

Barb and I have known each other since the early 2000’s when I was doing IT support for the company she works for, and then started doing her personal computer support as well. And like many of my long-time clients, we’ve become long-time friends.

Always nice.

We actually got some rain today, pretty heavy for a few minutes, and the temp never got about 93°.
