Well, it looks like X has finally decided I didn’t break any rules in trying to sign up with them, and I got an email from them today, telling me that I had been unsuspended.

As I posted before, I’m still not sure what I might have done to get suspended. I signed up, picked and entered a password, and then they sent me a verification email to give them back the 6 digits, which I did, correctly.

This was at 12:32 pm. Then, at 12:33, I received an email suspending my account.

Since I never got to post or even log in, I’m still not sure how I managed to break one of the following rules.

Please note that your account was previously suspended for violating one or more of the X Rules, such as:

1. Sending multiple unsolicited @replies or mentions.

2. Posting multiple unrelated updates to a trending or popular topic.

3. Aggressive and random repost and/or liking posts from other accounts.

4. Misuse of X product features

This includes any of the following:

  • “follow churn” – following and then unfollowing large numbers of accounts in an effort to inflate one’s own follower count;
  • indiscriminate following – following and/or unfollowing a large number of unrelated accounts in a short time period, particularly by automated means; and
  • duplicating another account’s followers, particularly using automation.

Please note that repeated violations of the X rules may result in suspension.

We’ll see how it goes.

Chinese Food, and the Flu?

We got up about 9:30 this morning, looking forward to a nice, quiet time just staying around the rig all day.

I fixed some of the coffee our daughter-in-law Linda gave us for Christmas. The gift that just keeps on giving. Thanks, Linda.

Jan and I talked about our upcoming travels for the rest of the year, and things we need to get done before we leave. Then Jan fixed leftover Chinese for lunch.

I think Chinese is one of those foods that, like Italian, gets even better as leftovers. And still spicy hot.

After lunch, I had planned to work outside on some rig maintenance stuff, but quickly found it too cold to work without gloves. And with gloves, it was just too clumsy. So I’ll have to put it off until it gets a little warmer. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like that will be anytime soon. In fact, it’s supposed to be even colder the next few days, with lows in the 20’s.

Later in the afternoon, Jan made a batch of her great sugar-free fudge with walnuts using Splenda instead of sugar. Hmm, hmm, good.

And since I couldn’t work outside, I decided to make up for it with a nice nap. While I was napping, Brandi called and told Jan she thought she might be coming down the the flu.

I sure hope we don’t come down with it.

According to the web, you can be infectious one day before symptoms, and you will have symptoms 1 – 4 days after your infection. So if we’re still OK at the end of the week, we should be all right. We’ll see.

About 5 pm, I fixed coffee again, and supper was the last of the Chinese. Still good.

That was about it for the day. Just another great day of full-timing.

Gyro Bowls and Bingo . . .

Woke up this morning to much nicer weather than yesterday. And after some delicious fresh-ground Chocolate Almondine coffee, a Christmas gift from our son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Linda, I headed out about 12:30 for some errands and client visits.

My first stop was Fry’s Electronics, and then my other favorite local electronics place, EPO (Electronic Parts Outlet), looking for some connectors, but I struck out at both places. I may end up ordering them online. We’ll see.

Then it was on to my client’s office. I had planned to come back here and work tonight while Jan is at Bingo, but my plans changed.

Next, I went by my client’s house, the one that I had all the AT&T problems with. Seems like their network printer wasn’t working.

Turns out that when AT&T switched them over to Dynamic IP’s, they also changed their IP addresses around.

There are two IP address series used on internal home networks, 192.168.x.x and 10.0.x.x. Previously, everything was set up to use the 192 series, but when AT&T switched things over, the IP address also switched to the 10 series. Why, I don’t know.

But since the Xerox Phaser 8400DP printer was hard-coded for a 192 address, it was suddenly left high and dry on the wrong network. But resetting the printer to 10.0.1.100 instead of 192.168.1.100 fixed it all right up.

As Jan says, probably more than you really wanted to know.

By this time, it was after 4 pm, so I headed back to the rig to pick up Jan so we could head back up to Webster to pick up our granddaughter, Piper, for Bingo. Then we headed back down to Dickinson to have supper at Monterey’s Little Mexico. While our friend Maria picked them up about 6:30, I headed back up to Brandi’s.

I feel like I’m going around in circles.

While we were eating, our daughter Brandi called to ask if I could ride up to north Houston with our son-in-law Lowell to pick up his truck and drive it back home. He started a new job on Monday, and had driven his truck to work, but then, when he was issued his company car, he needed someone to drive his truck back home.

A couple of days ago, I ordered Landon one of those Gyro Bowls they sell on TV.

Gyro Bowl

It came today, but since UPS didn’t deliver it until after he was already in bed, he hadn’t seen it yet. But knowing him, I know he’ll be fascinated by it. The idea is that you can’t spill anything out of it. If you turn it upside down, the bowl stays level, and the gimbaled cover rotates over it.

Also, surprisingly, my power window motor came in today. Very quick, since it was just shipped from Mesa, AZ yesterday. Guess I know what I’ll be doing later this week.

After picking up Jan and Piper at Bingo, and then taking Piper home, it was almost 11 by the time we got back to the rig.

A busy, but fun day.

Drying Out . . .

Well, the rain is gone for a day or so, at least. But it’s supposed to be back for Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and on through the end of next week.

Oh boy!

I checked Amazon today and found they finally had the .380 caliber laser cartridge

LaserLyte Cartridge

for my Laserlyte Training System is back in stock.

I got the 9mm one when I got the Target System right before Christmas, but the gun store was out of the .380’s, and so was Amazon.

LaserLyte Target

So since Amazon got them in first, I ordered it from them. Should be here Friday.

Fun, fun, fun!

About noon, I started another batch of my world-famous (well, I think it’s really good) Chicken Tortilla Soup. I already had the poached chicken breasts in the freezer from the big batch I did last week, so I just started the chicken broth in the slow cooker and added the spices and a can of Rotel Habanero Tomato Sauce, and let it heat up.

As soon as it was hot, I dropped in the frozen chicken breast halves so they could thaw out.

I thought I might add some carrots, so while things were getting started, I chopped up a couple and precooked them a little in the microwave before adding them in too.

While that was working, I looked at the no heat problem with the Splendide washer/dryer. Before I did anything else, I wanted to be sure that my dryer vent wasn’t clogged. If it is, the lack of airflow will cause the overtemp sensor to shut off the heat.

But unfortunately, the problem couldn’t be that simple. So it looks like I’ll have to go ahead and pull the washer out of the cabinet when I replace the door switch. As I said before, I was hoping to avoid that.

Oh, well.

A little after 4 pm, I added the fresh Pico de Gallo we bought the other day, and about 4:30, we were ready to eat.

The soup turned out really good. Even Jan had a second bowl. And we’ve got plenty for leftovers. YUMMM!

Tomorrow I’ve got to get an early start because I’ve got a 10 am appointment with a client I haven’t seen since last year. Always like repeat business.

Recipe for Murder . . .

Saw an article today that, according to the Coast Guard, the Great Lakes are freezing over at the earliest date since the 1930’s. And the same thing is happening at Niagara Falls,

Here’s what it looked like when we were there on September 25th, 2009.

Niagara Falls 2ba

And here’s what it looks like now.

Niagara Falls Frozen Over

I finally got a chance to crawl under the rig and look at my Kwikee step problem. It just suddenly quit working one day while we were gate-guarding late last year. I could still hear the motor running when it was supposed to, but the step could be pulled in and out like it wasn’t connected to anything.

At that point, I figured my homemade cotter key, i.e., a paper clip, had come loose.

Kwikee Step - Broken 4

But what I found was this. The linkage was hanging down, not connected to anything. All I could see was where it had broken off.

Kwikee Step - Broken 2

When I pulled it off, it looked like this.

Kwikee Step - Broken

And below is where it broke off from the motor shaft. It must have just been old age because there was never any binding to cause it. My next thought was “Oh Crap. I’m going to be buying a new motor.” I figured there was no way I was going to be able to buy just the shaft and linkage. I could see a lot of $$$$ in my future.

Kwikee Step - Broken 3

But luckily for me, I was wrong. A little interneting showed me this linkage kit for my Kwikee Series 28 step. And with a little more perusing, I found that PPL Motorhomes here in Houston has them in stock. So I’ll pick one up later in the week.

Kwikee Linkage Kit

I was also happy to see that all the different parts for my model are available, including a complete new step for about $420.

Early in the morning, I started a big pot of soup, basically using whatever we had in-house. I started out with a big box of chicken stock, a big tomato juice. a can of Habanero Rotel, a can of Diced Tomatoes, 2 cans of Kidney Beans, a bag of frozen kernel corn, and 2 shredded poached chicken breasts. A few hours later, we had a great batch of soup for supper, and plenty left over for more meals. Hmm! Hmm! Good!

Tomorrow, Chris and I are going to meet Lowell and Landon in downtown Houston at the George R. Brown Convention Center for the Great Train Expo, a traveling model railroad show. Brandi says he’s really looking forward to it, and talks about it constantly.

Me too!

Train Show 2

This will probably be Landon’s favorite part.

You can win a Million Dollars a year for life. That’s not an unusual prize these days, but the unusual part is that after you win, you get to designate another person to also receive a Million Dollars a year for life.

You can only imagine that no matter who you choose, you’re going to make someone, or a lot of someone else’s mad as hell. It will not end well.

Here’s another story about an elderly man who won $500 a week for life, and all his ‘relatives’ who never cared about him, came out of the woodwork.

The End of An Era . . .

Jan and I headed out about 9:15 this morning for a day of fun and folic. Well, more like errands and eating.

Our first stop was in Pasadena to pick up a client’s computer. The hard drive in her several-years-old one had died, and rather than just replace the bad drive, she decided that this was a good time to upgrade to a newer, better computer. So I was picking up her old one to see if I can pull anything off her hard drive using the ‘freezer trick’.

The ‘freezer trick’ sometimes lets you pull data off a supposedly dead hard drive by putting it in the freezer in a Ziplock bag for a few hours. Then you reinstall it in the computer ASAP and see if you can get data off of it before it warms up. In the past, I’ve done this over and over on a drive to get everything needed off of it.

Of course, sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn’t. We’ll see.

Then it was on to our son Chris’ to meet up with him and Linda for lunch. After a little discussion, we ended up at a nearby Cheddar’s. Jan loves their Chicken Pot Pie, so she was happy with the choice. And we all had a great meal, too.

After lunch, we stopped off at our former storeroom to make the final payment to close out our 20-year-long rental. The end of an era.

Back at the house, we said our goodbyes and then headed back out. First up was a haircut. I’ve gone to this same barber for about 20 years, so I always come back here when we’re in town. My last haircut was in October up in Bryan/College Station while we were gate-guarding in the area. Before that, it was back here last August.

Hey, when you don’t have much hair, you only need a haircut every 3 or 4 months.

Our next destination was the new Marina Bay Lake Cove RV Resort down in Dickinson. Although it’s looking more and more like we’ll get down to Galveston Bay RV Resort in the next couple of weeks, we wanted to check out this park as a backup.

What we found, though, is that, although the park’s 96 sites are nicely laid out around a man-made lake,

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

it’s mostly occupied by small campers and 5th wheels of the type used by workers. There is a nice office and a smallish pool, and the sites are nicely landscaped, but the overall feeling is of a trailer park.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

There were only about 10 sites open, and I don’t think I saw more than 4 or 5 Class A’s. Of course, there was this one.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

The sites on either side of it were empty, and I saw no evidence of burn damage there, so maybe they got moved out in time. It was hot enough to melt their satellite dish about six feet away.

After looking the place over, we both agreed that, with the rates about the same as Galveston Bay, it really wasn’t someplace we wanted to stay.

Next up was a stop at Kroger’s for gas, and then on to Harbor Freight Tools for some goodies that I really didn’t need, but couldn’t resist.

Finishing up there, we finally headed toward our daughter Brandi’s, but only after a Starbucks stop, since we didn’t have time for coffee this morning. Getting there, I found that my client’s new computer had been delivered, so I can start setting it up. So after checking out Landon’s new room, we all drove over to Brandi and Lowell’s favorite burger joint, J-Dub’s Burger Barn, over in downtown Katy.

And it was easy to see why they like it so much. J-Dub’s mixes their hamburger meat in a 75 – 25 ratio of beef and brisket, and hand-cut their fries every day.

They also have their buns specially baked to their specifications, including this jalapeno bun on the Jalapeno Burger that I ordered.

$18.00!

or, How High Will It Go!

Well, as I said in last night’s blog, I decided to wait until next week to win the PowerBall, knowing it would be over $1 Billion, and now it is.

They’re saying $1.3 Billion, but I suspect by next Wednesday it will be higher.

In case you didn’t follow yesterday’s blog link called Lucky You, you should. Even if you figure you’ll never win the lottery, it’s a very interesting read. And some of the things he suggests you do are kind of radical, but he gives good reasons for them.

The two most unusual ones are to legally change your name, and completely change your appearance – before you pick up your money.

Apparently, it’s pretty quick and easy to change your name in most states. In fact, you can even fill out the forms yourself and turn them in at the courthouse, and in 60-90 days, you’re a new person. Then, after a professional extreme makeover, you’re ready to go and pick up your money.

To show the change a professional makeover can make, here’s an example.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

In yesterday’s blog, when I was talking about EZ Tags, a blog reader reminded me that I didn’t tell you where to get your tag.
There are six locations around the city, all right along different toll roads.

EZ Tag locations

I really like the way Houston handles their tags. Other states are more expensive and not so convenient, especially ones in the north and northeast.

We’ve spent a lot of time in Elkhart, IN, and would regularly drive over to the nearest big city, Mishawaka, a suburb of South Bend. And the quickest way to get there from Elkhart is to take I-80, which is also a toll road. So to make it more convenient for our traveling back and forth, I looked into getting a toll pass there.

But, first off, the tag itself costs about $15.00, and then there was a $1 a month fee whether you use the tag or not. We had hoped to get one and just use it every year or so when we’re in the area. But the $1 a month fee would eat up any money left in the account, unlike our EZ Tag in Houston, which we only use for a few months a year with no monthly charges.

Recently, I finally got around to updating and posting an About Us page here on the blog, so you can find out more about Jan and me, where we came from, and how we got here. You can find it on the menu at the top of the page, or use the link above. Check it out.

Jan was still under the weather from her migraine this morning, so we didn’t walk today either. It also didn’t help that it was 46° and windy outside. Maybe tomorrow, so we’ll see.

By the afternoon, however, she was feeling a little better, so about 1:15, we decided to head into Columbus to try out the Sunday lunch buffet. I guess it says something that at 1:30, the parking lot was still full, but we did get seated immediately, and then headed over to the very long buffet table.

We had previously only had breakfast at Schobel’s and always enjoyed it a lot, but this was our first time for lunch. And it turned out to be a really good choice. I know we’ve had friends say that they didn’t like Schobel’s, but our experience has been very different.

Everything was delicious, from the homemade salad dressing and croutons to the many fresh vegetables. And the meats, ham, sausage, fried chicken, and roast beef, were just as good. We’ll certainly go back for the buffet again.

Coming home, we stopped off at Brookshire Bros. for a few things, and while we were there, I checked my four PowerBall tickets to see if I had won anything. And I did.

I won on 3 of my 4 tickets, with a $2 win, a $4 win, and a $12 win, for a total of $18, which means I got back most of the $20 that I paid for the tickets.

So now I’m all set for my big win on Wednesday.

Let’s see, where did I leave that name-change paperwork?

Still Didn’t Make It . . .

We still didn’t make it to the movie in Beeville once again, but mostly because we didn’t try.

I had a feeling I might get called in on this gate again, and I was right. And about 3:30, the text came in. It did help that they moved the shift time back from 5 to 5 to 5:30 to 5:30. This was done to better match up with the frack’s shift change.

A lot of guards around here seem to be leery of working a frack gate because they’re supposed to be really busy. This is the second ‘frack’ gate I’ve worked with SiteWatch, and so fa,r I’m not impressed.

I don’t know if these are smaller fracks or what. But the 4 to 6 sand trucks an hour is not much. And using the iPad, it just takes about 15 seconds to log them in if they’re already in the system, and maybe 30 to 45 seconds if they’re not. And since they usually all come in together, you’re looking at most 5 minutes to get them all in.

It’s kind of like Crocodile Dundee, when he said, “That’s not a knife. This is a knife.”

Six sand trucks does not a frack make. A frack is sand trucks lined up as far as the eye can see down the road. 40 to 60 trucks an hour for hours at a time.

That’s a frack.

We have a staging pad turnoff about 75 yards before the gate, where the sand trucks are supposed to wait to be called into the pad. But last night, as things were starting up, the truck drivers didn’t know that they were supposed to wait, so they’d come on up to the gate. Then I’d have to make them back up until they could make the turn, and then wait on the pad.

But it looks like I’ve got them all trained now, since I haven’t had the problem tonight so far.

Jan fixed up another batch of her Hot & Spicy Chicken Vegetable Soup this morning, so I had some before I left for work, and bought a mug of it with me on the gate to heat up for a late-night meal.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

You can find her basic recipe here – Jan’s Chicken Vegetable Soup. But she spices ours up by using Hot Habanero Rotel Diced Tomatoes rather than the Crushed Tomatoes listed, plus a lot of hot seasonings for that added kick.

Handy Tip of the Day:

If you ever wonder if your remote control is working, just hold down a button and point it at your digital camera.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

Digital cameras see much farther down into the infrared part of the spectrum, the area where remotes live, so they show up bright and clear. This is also why your digital camera can take such good pictures in dim light.

This will only work within the same room, point it at the TV, type of remotes. It will not work with those remotes like the ones with the Dish receivers that will work from another room. Those work on RF (radio frequencies), not infrared light.

I noticed recently that HP is now offering an Instant Ink option for its Wi-Fi-enabled printers. When it gets low, it just orders more ink for you. And then a few days, your ink order shows up on your doorstep. Well and good, but what I want to know is, what else is it ordering?

Pay-per-view porn? Escort Services? Extra paper so it can print out filthy pictures? What?

I wanna know what my printer is doing behind my back.

A Day Delayed . . .

I woke up this morning to a phone call from my client saying that the Internet was down at the office. Apparently, they were doing some more remodeling in the office this morning, and they had the power off for a while and when it came back on, the Internet was down. Or so they thought.

But when I went online from home, I found the website up and running, which meant the Internet at least, was working. So I told the office manager to check out the Shipping computer to see if it could get online.

And since it could, I told her to check the Ethernet cable running from her computer to the router in the closet, the same closet where the construction guys had been fooling with the power at the circuit breaker panel. And after unplugging and re-plugging the connector, the Internet was back on in her office.

The office manager’s computer is the only one that is still hardwired to the router. All the rest are on WiFi. But after 3 different USB WiFi adapters and also an internal plug-in PCI card, I gave up. I was never able to get any WiFi adapter to work on it. So it’s the only one that’s still a direct connect.

Jan and I headed into Clear Lake about 12:45 for her 1:30 Pre-Op consultation, but it seemed to be all downhill from there.

Unfortunately, we were given the wrong info about which door to come in, so we had to walk clear to the other side of the hospital to where she was supposed to check in. Normally, this wouldn’t be a problem, but Jan’s still not up to snuff, so it was a little wearing on her.

But after filling out a lot of ‘paperwork’, both physical and digital, getting stuck for another CBC, and being told to show up Friday at 9:30 for her 11:30 procedure, we were finally on our way.

Then, just sitting down for lunch at Cheddar’s, I got a call from the hospital asking Jan to come back because they ‘forgot’ to get a specimen for a urinalysis. I told them we’d be back in about an hour.

Then, about 30 minutes later, we got a call from her Dr. telling us that when we left the hospital last Thursday, they had ‘forgotten’ to tell her to stop taking her daily baby aspirin that she takes as a general heart attack preventative.

And since they want her to be off them for a week, they were pushing her procedure back to next Wednesday. Bummer.

Jan just wants to get this over with.

I was hoping to get back early enough this afternoon to have time to take down the big awning to take it in to be duplicated, but no luck.

And tomorrow it’s supposed to rain all day. But maybe Friday, since that’s now open.

We were supposed to get together tomorrow afternoon with our long-time friends Beth and Bob Young. They’re moving to Salt Lake City on Friday, so tomorrow was a last-ditch dinner, but unfortunately, circumstances intervened, so we’ll have to catch up with them on our next pass through Salt Lake.

To Snow or Not To Snow . . .

It only made it up to 42° and rained a good part of the day, so all we did was head over to Los Ramirez for dinner about 4 pm. Delicious as always, and with the rotten weather, almost empty.

We’ve heard that there was snow up in the Conroe area, but none down here so far, but it’s 39° and still raining, so you never can tell.

Jan’s going to do up a big pot of her World-Famous Chili tomorrow for us to eat off of for the rest of the week. Really looking forward to it with all this cold, wet weather.

Another Dare . . .

Well, as I mentioned yesterday, I was on the phone this morning with the DJO rep about the $905.51 bill I received yesterday. When he dropped off my bone graft stimulator, he told me that since I had been approved, there would be no cost. Otherwise, I would owe $900. So I was surprised to get that bill.

But when I got him on the phone, there was a lot of hemming and hawing, and backtracking about what this bill was for. And every time I would circle back around to what he actually told me, the stuttering would start again.

So after a few minutes of this round and round, I pulled out the big gun.

I said, “OK, is the address on the bill where I should send the unit back, or do you have another one that I should use?”

And the stuttering started all over again.

Finally, he said, “Well, we do have a needs-based program that might be able to cover your bill. I’ll have them call you this afternoon.”

The reason I knew that this was a real threat was that from the bill, I knew that they had already received $3623.23 from Medicare, which they would have to give back.

And a little after 4 pm, right after I got home from work, they called. And after asking me a couple of questions about income and marital status, she told me that I was approved for the payment cancellation program and that they would send me a form to sign.

Well, that was easy.

Regular readers will know how I like hot stuff.

No, not just Jan, but food too.

And I can’t resist a challenge.

The last one was back in September when we had lunch once more at The Cookshack up in Webster. Here’s the post from back then.

Later, a little after 1pm, Jan and I drove up to Clear Lake to have lunch again at The Cookshack. I was hoping that the owner would be there this time so I could try to two levels hotter than AMF Chicken Tenders that he told me about on our first visit.

He was surprised that I was able to handle the standard AMF version, but when we went back for our 2nd visit, he wasn’t there, and no one knew anything about a hotter version of AMF. However, he was there today, but I still didn’t get the two-level’s hotter version, just 1 level hotter.

I think I may have called his bluff, because when I asked him for the two-level version, he said he only had the one-level available, since it took him a MONTH to make up the even hotter stuff.

So what, he mixes it up in a big cauldron during the full moon, with eye of newt, puppy dog tails, lizard tongues, etc.?

Yeah, right!

I’m not sure I could tell that today’s version was any hotter than the original one, but it was hot. However, I told Jan I probably won’t order it again, since it was just the challenge more than anything.

And now it’s Arby’s turn.

They’ve just announced their Diablo Dare.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

Starting Monday, the fast-food chain is bringing the heat with the new Diablo Dare Sandwich, which comes in two varieties – crispy chicken and smoked brisket.

The chain said the limited-time sandwiches come with five sources of heat: ghost pepper jack cheese, fiery hot seasoning, fire-roasted jalapenos, and Diablo BBQ sauce, served on a red chipotle bun

Arby’s said the sandwich is “so spicy, we had to include a free vanilla shake to cool your mouth down between bites.”

I’ll be the judge of that.

But sometime between now and February 6th, we’ll be checking out our nearest Arby’s.

Challenge Accepted!

Titanic or Olympic?

Today was a nice, laidback, quiet one, with lunch at Yummy Yummy, our favorite Chinese Buffet. And since it was a weekday, with our senior discount, it was only $9.49.

Nice!

Then coming home, we made a Timewise stop for gas and $1.1 Billion Mega-Millions Lottery tickets, along with PO and park mailbox stops.

Like I said, a nice, laidback, quiet day.

Tomorrow evening we’ve got tickets to see Jeff Dunham, of “Silence! I Keel You!” fame, at the NRG Arena at 7 pm. Since it probably will go to at least 10 pm, we plan on eating dinner first down in our area at the Longhorn Steakhouse before heading up to the Arena.

Though we’ve seen a lot of his TV performances, this will be our first time to see him in person, and we’re really looking forward to it.

One last follow-up on yesterday’s Lucas: Prince of Darkness electrical systems in British cars.

When asked Why do the British like warm beer?, the answer is Because Lucas also makes refrigerators.

Titanic or Olympic?

Jan and I just finished watching a fascinating video called “Titanic: The Shocking Truth“. Streaming for free on Amazon Prime, it lays out the theory that the Titanic that sank on April 12, 1912, was actually its sister ship, the Olympic.

I had heard about this years ago, but never paid much attention to the idea since it seemed like just another wild ‘conspiracy theory’. But this video puts the whole thing in another light.

It sounds crazy, but it all lines up.

Drawn from actual photographs, movies, court records, and eyewitness testimony, it lays out the reasons for the swap, and how easy it would have been, since both were built at the same time and were almost identical.

But the few small differences seem to give away the switch-out. Things like the fact that the Olympic had 16 portholes in one location, and the Titanic had 14. All this is shown and verified from photographs at the time.

But strangely, when the ‘Titanic’ sailed on its maiden voyage from Southampton, it had suddenly grown two extra portholes.

And there are a number of other matches along the way.

But the real kicker, for me at least, was this still shot that I grabbed from the video of the 1986 French Expedition to the wreck of the ‘Titanic’.

It’s from the bow of the ship showing the nameplate. Part of the ‘Titanic’ nameplate has fallen away, revealing the letters of another name underneath.

The letters M and P.

Not Quite . . .

Well, I got my big $47 Social Security Check increase for 2024 today.

Still trying to decide how to spend my big windfall.

Coming home from work today, I stopped off at a Sonic on the way to pick up dinner for us.

And of course, I had to try Sonic’s new Peanut Butter Bacon Cheeseburger and Shakes, and my review is –

They’re OK. Not great. Just OK.

Actually, the Burger was pretty good, but compared to Texas Huddle’s version, it loses out.

Mainly because it needs Jelly. It all comes down to the fact that PB needs its J.

And despite what the reviews said about the shakes needing more Bacon.

As much as I like Bacon, the shake doesn’t need more, it needs less.

Less, as in None.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

As much as I wanted it to work, it just doesn’t.

The PB taste is really good, but the bacon taste and crunch just doesn’t work.

The result is OK, but not have again OK.

Wonder why your restaurant’s sandwich is so expensive and has gone up so much in the last few years?

Restaurant owner breaks down how inflation causes him to charge nearly $16 for a BLT

Will Restaurants Investment Group founder and CEO Brian Will broke down his monthly expenses during an appearance on “Varney & Co.” after a friend confronted him about the price of his $16 BLT sandwich.

The wholesale cost for the popular sandwich is only $5, according to Will, but the need to cover operational expenses is what caused the meal that was once $12.99 three years ago, to become $15.99 today.

Will spends $20,000 a month on renting a space that houses one of his restaurants in a “new mixed-use development,” arguing it “costs a lot” given the location.

My utilities [are] $6,000 a month. My labor in December [was]$60,000, which means I’ve got $86,000 of base cost the day I open the doors on January 1,” Will explained

“You figure in a 32% food cost. I have $11 of gross profit in that sandwich. You take all my costs divided by $11 of gross profit, and I [have] to sell 93,000 sandwiches (sic. think he means 7818 sandwiches) just to get to zero before I can make any money,” he continued.

Now you know.

Alexa Doesn’t Sing Anymore . . .

We had planned to both get haircuts today, but our stylist texted us last night saying she had CoVid? so we just did a Wal-Mart and then headed home, with a Cowboy Coffee stop for Ghirardelli Hot Chocolates, perfect on a 40° day.

Tomorrow, Jan’s getting her toeies done, and then we plan on having lunch at BoomerJack’s once again. But as usual, that can change.

Saw this on Facebook,

and it reminded me of our late lamented Mister’s first encounter with snow in Billings, MT, in 2008 on our way up to Alaska.

He put one paw down in the snow, then pulled it back and looked at it. And then refused to go any further.

But it did lead to one of my favorite photos of my Jan.

And on the subject of snow.

Our kids have laughed at us because Jan and I always say, “Thank you” to Alexa after we ask her to turn something on or off in the rig. We tell them we want to be polite to our future robot-overlords.

And normally, Alexa has some sort of comeback. Like “Thank you, Your Thanks Always Give Me A Charge” and “You’re So Very Welcome.” Or “My Pleasure. Just Doing My Job” and”Any Time. Literally”. And a number of others.

But she used to sing.

In fact, she would sing, “You’re Very Welcome”. But I realized a while back that I hadn’t heard her sing in a long time. And I’m not the only one. There are even some things on the Internet with other people noticing the same thing.

Maybe She’s Depressed.

It’s Called ‘Good’ For A Reason . . .

Remember, to access our blog links,

We were on our way up to Conroe about 9:45 this morning, this early because we were meeting up with Debi & Ed Hurlburt at Vernon’s Kuntry Katfish, a 90+ minute drive away.

Not sure why, but the traffic was really smooth today, with none of the slowdowns at the normal choke-points on our route, both going up and coming home.

One thing nice about Vernon’s is that they bring out a plate of hushpuppies and pickled tomatoes,

their version of chips and salsa, I guess.

Jan got the Blackened Lemon-Pepper Catfish, along with Cole slaw and Fried Okra.

The lone oyster on her plate was a donation from my 3 Item Platter, with Catfish, Shrimp, and Oysters, along with Fried Okra and Pinto Beans.

One thing kind of strange for me about eating here is that, as much as I love their food, I definitely do not like their homemade tartar sauce. It’s sharp and bitter to me.

Dickinson Seafood’s is much better.

Somehow, even though we were full, and had food to bring home, we ended up getting slices of their Good Pie.

And it’s called ‘Good’ for a reason.

With a nice flaky crust, it’s layers of cream cheese, pineapple, and bananas, which’s then topped with whipped cream, chocolate syrup, and toasted pecans.

Like I said . . .

Already looking forward to next month.

Tomorrow’s going to be another stay-at-home day.

It will be nice for a change.

And the rain came . . . and the wind blew . . .

Well, today certainly got off to a really rough start.

Rough, as in 60mph + winds and rain so heavy you couldn’t see out the window.

About 4 am, the cold front rolled in, and I thought the wind was going to roll the coach over. This was the worst storm we’ve ever been in since we started living in the coach. And it pretty much raged until about 10 am.

When Jan got up, she said she was glad to find the bay water right where she left it…in the bay, and not up over the banks.

The weather map shows what it looked like, with us right in the middle of this mess. And even worse, it wasn’t moving. It just sat there right on top of us.

Weather Map 20110108

The wind was gusting so hard it was trying to suck the vent covers off the roof fans. They kept jumping up and down. And as you can see in the photo below, the neighbor’s sat dish bit the dust…er, grass, too.

Storm 1-9

And the whitecaps were really something, too. We’ve never seen the bay this rough.

Storm2 1-9

This photo from about a month ago shows the bird feeder being blown about. Well, this morning the feeder blew off the pole completely and ended up about 30 feet away.

High Wind 2

After surviving the storm, we left the rig about 10:15, heading up to Friendswood to meet all our kids at the Texas Tea Room. We really like this place and let Chris and Linda check it out too, since they’re the only ones who hadn’t tried it.

Here’s Brandi with Landon showing off his new shirt. Now we’re gonna have to decide if he’s going to play for OU or Alabama when he grows up. And then, of course, he’ll play for the Steelers like my uncle, Tom Calvin.

Landon at TTR

After lunch, Jan went back to Brandi and Lowell’s to Landon-sit while they went to the movie. They saw ‘True Grit’ and really liked it. Which is pretty much what everyone seems to be saying.

I went back to the rig and worked a number of different projects, getting us ready to travel in a month or so.

Lowell called about 4 to say they were home, so I headed up that way. Coming home, since it was after 5 pm, we decided to stop for supper at King Food for some Chicken in Hot Garlic Sauce, XXXXX Spicy with Jalapenos. Hmm, hmm, Good. I can always tell when a dish is hot enough when my nose starts running, and the top of my head starts sweating.

A Rough Night . . .

and even rougher the next day.

This has been a wild and woolly day. It started about 1:30 this morning, when out of the blue, a thunderclap seemingly right above our heads, shook the coach and rocked it side to side. Jan was in bed and let out a scream as the thunder rolled on and on.

And then the rain came. And came and came…

By the time the storm front passed through, parts of Houston had over 6 inches of rain.

This photo from the Houston Chronicle shows some of the results.

Houston Flooding

And this is what the weather radar showed as we hunkered down in the rig.

Capture5'

We later found out that a small tornado touched down at the Mall of the Mainland, less than 5 miles away. And a bigger one hit up in Houston, tearing the roofs off a number of houses.

Sounds like we really dodged a bullet.

But as bad as the storm was, we stayed warm and dry, and only had one quick power glitch. But the storm just kept coming and coming.

Finally, about 3:30, the storm started to slack off and clear out, and we actually saw the sun and a little blue sky before the clouds rolled back in. But at least this time, it didn’t come with rain.

About 5 pm, Jan and I headed up to Seabrook to have some XXX hot wings at Hooter’s. Then we made a stop at Home Depot before heading home.

Regular blog visitor and Landon’s honorary uncle Butterbean, sent this photo of what Landon would look like as a real Texas cowboy.

A Real Cowboy

As Brandi said, “That’s TOTALLY Landon!”

And the Thunder Rolled . . .

or if it’s not one thing, it’s another.

Well, the rains came back today, and pretty much didn’t stop all day. Here’s what it looked like at the height of the storm. Note that it stretched from Alabama to west Texas.

20120109 Storm 2

20120108 Storm 1

One thing the rains did do was tell me that my recent caulking job had some effect. Although the rain was much heavier today, I had a lot less water coming in. So when things dry out, I’ll get back up there and take another look.

I mentioned on Monday that I had ordered a new door switch for our Splendide washer/dryer, and that I would be able to install it without pulling the washer out of the wall.

So, of course, the karma gods wreaked their revenge. Last night, when I did a load of laundry, I found that the dryer doesn’t. So it looks like I’ll be pulling it out anyway. But I need to check the schematic before I’m sure. I guess it’s possible that this is a further problem with the switch. I’ll have to investigate a little more.

A little after 4 pm, Jan and I headed out for dinner. We ate at Chili’s again, but just to mix it up, we ate at a different Chili’s this time.

Wouldn’t want to get in a rut, now would we?

When we parked at the restaurant, I noticed a black Suburban right next to us with “Dove Island Lodge – An Alaskan Experience” painted on the side, and in addition, it had Alaskan tags.

A long drive, I thought.

The place wasn’t very busy, and there was only another couple seated behind us. And as they were leaving, I noticed the woman had an Alaskan jacket on, so I asked her if they drove all the way from Alaska.

She said they hadn’t driven all the way, but had taken the ferry down the Alaska Marine Highway System from Sitka, AK to Bellingham, WA.

As it turns out, the Dove Island Lodge is a hunting/fishing lodge located on a private island near Sitka.

Dove Island

They were down here for the winter, along with another couple, making the rounds of the sports and fishing shows and conventions. They were in Houston for the Houston Safari Club’s Sporting Expo & Convention that starts this Friday.

We talked about the temps in Alaska right now and how we’ve seen -50° shown for Fairbanks this winter. They said it doesn’t get that cold in Sitka, usually in the 30’s, and occasionally in the teens. But that was about it.

After a nice conversation, and finishing our dinner, we made a quick stop at the PO to mail a letter, and then went by the house to pick up our mail. Then, it was a quick stop for some groceries at H.E.B., and finally, a quick visit with Chris and Linda to pick up a circular saw.

Vanilla Heat . . .

or Target strikes again.

For the second time in 3 months, this time due to Target’s recent credit card security breach, I’m getting a new Chase VISA debit card, whether I want to or not.

While we were gate guarding last October, I got an email from Chase saying they had seen suspicious activity on my account and they were sending me a new card. Which meant I had to go through all my accounts online and change them over to the new card. On top of that, I never saw any problems with my account in the first place.

And now, because of Targe,t I have to do it all again. The only time we’ve been to Target in the last five years and it had to be during their security breach.

The weather was finally warm enough and dry enough, so we got in a walk this morning for the first time in a couple of weeks. Afterward, we had planned to sit outside with our coffee, but it turned out to be too windy, although Mister was happy outside for a while.

About 12:15, Jan and I headed up to Pasadena to check in on a long-time client. Jan often goes with me on some of these calls, especially when we’re going to eat at Longhorn Steakhouse afterward.

Tricia had two machines for me to check out. The first one, a desktop unit I installed a couple of years ago, didn’t really have any particular problems, so I just gave it a general checkup, cleanout, and update. The second machine, a laptop, had a bigger problem. A Conduit Search problem.

Conduit Search is a pesky piece of malware that users usually bring on themselves by clicking on something they shouldn’t. Email works fine, but any time you try to go online, it intercepts your request and first takes you to their own search page.

But in this case, the search link was broken, so you couldn’t go anywhere. I spent about 45 minutes trying to clear it using some of the easiest methods, but nothing worked, so this one goes home with me for a more in-depth cleaning.

Our next stop was at another client’s to pick up an office key so I could get it duplicated. I don’t want a repeat of last weekend when I couldn’t get into the office to work after he changed the lock since last year.

But before we got the key duplicated at Lowes, we stopped at the Longhorn Steakhouse next door for dinner. And after a great meal of steaks and potatoes, we’ve decided that Longhorn is our new favorite steak place, beating out Texas Roadhouse, Longhorn is a little more expensive, but not by much, and has a better atmosphere, not quite as noisy. All in all, a nicer experience.

After dinner, we stopped at the Lowes next door to get my key duplicated and I came across one of these, a Minute Key machine. And it was fast and pretty neat.

Minute Key Machine

You press the Start button on the touchscreen, then select House or Car key. Next, you insert your key in the slot, and the machine tells you if it can duplicate it. You then select from a number of different colored and patterned blanks, and tell it how many copies you want. It gives you the price, you insert your credit card, and off it goes. And in just a couple of minutes, you’ve got your key. And in less time than it usually takes to just track the key guy down to start with.

Really neat.

After dropping off the master key at the client’s, we headed home with a stop off at Kroger’s for a few things. And I found my new favorite product.

And no, Vanilla Heat’s not a new rap group. It’s International Delight’s new creamer flavor, Vanilla Heat, a vanilla-flavored, spicy creamer. I think I’m in love.

Vanilla Heat Creamer

I tasted it when we got home, and the heat seems to come, not from any type of peppers, but from cinnamon oil, the same ingredient that makes Red Hots hot. And the slight cinnamon taste that goes with the heat, along with the vanilla, just adds to the flavor. A great new product.

Is it Wet and Cold, or Cold and Wet?

After another cold, wet morning and another wet, cold afternoon (it never got out of the 30’s all day), about 4 pm, Jan and I headed up to Peter’s BBQ in Ellinger to have the Friday night BBQ buffet, always a favorite of ours. I mean, how can you not like all the Beef Brisket, Sausage, Ribs, Fried Catfish, Fried Shrimp, Fried Chicken, Fried Frog legs, Hushpuppies, ten different vegetable sides, and eight different salads, and three or four different desserts, you can eat? Plus a soft ice cream machine.

And our total bill, with drinks, was only $22.07. Nice!

Finally, waddling away from the buffet, we dropped a letter off at the Ellinger PO, and then drove up to La Grange to get a few things from the Wal-Mart there, finally getting home about 6:30.

Tomorrow we’ve got a round-trip down to the Clear Lake area, leaving here about 9:30 am. Along the way, we’ll stop off in the Pasadena area to pick up a client’s dead computer before finally heading down to Webster. Among the plans, lunch with our kids, making the last payment, closing out our storeroom account, getting a haircut (both of them), and checking out a new RV park in the area. Then, heading home later in the afternoon, we’ll stop off at Brandi and Lowell’s for dinner, and also to pick up the client’s new computer that should be delivered there tomorrow.

So all in all, a busy day.

We have had a little bit of encouraging news from Galveston Bay RV Park. It sounds like they’re actually making some progress on the electrical situation with the new sites, so maybe we’ll get down this year after all.

I’ve mentioned some of this before, but for you Photoshop aficionados, or you Photoshop newbies, or wannabes, I’ve come across some great tutorial sites for you to take a look at.

and download a free, licensed version of Photoshop CS2 for either Windows or Mac. It’s about 340 MB and took me less than 30 minutes to download on a 3G connection. Be sure and grab the License Serial Number further down the page.

As far as my ‘To Do’ list goes, it looks like Monday and Tuesday should be halfway decent with no rain, and temps in the 50’s, so hopefully I’ll be able to get some stuff done outside. But we’ll see.

PowerBall and EZ Tags . . .

Although the weather this morning wasn’t bad, our walk was called on account of migraine, Jan’s to be exact, so we stayed in.

Since her migraines often run in threes, i.e., three days in a row, with decreasing pain each day, tomorrow is possibly out also. So we’ll have to see how it goes.

The weather here is apparently cycling back through winter again, with day temps in the 50’s and night temps in the 30’s, or even the 20’s, like tomorrow night’s forecasted 29°.

And as far as the weather goes, we lucked up yesterday. They had hailstorms all around north Houston, with golf-ball-sized stones damaging auto paint jobs and breaking out windshields.

Really glad we weren’t at Lake Conroe this week.

With Jan under the weather, I headed into Columbus about 4 pm to pick up Whataburger for dinner. And again had no problems with my order.

Regular readers will remember my running battle with the Carthage Whataburger. We ate there about once a week for 3 months, and almost every time it was like pulling teeth to get my order correct.

Here’s a sample. Whataburger Order Problems

But the first part of December at the Katy Whataburger, and today in Columbus, I rattled off our order with absolutely no problems. And they got it perfectly.

So it really was that cashier.

While I was in Columbus, I also picked up some PowerBall tickets, but I probably didn’t need to. I decided not to win this time, but save my win for next Wednesday when the prize will be over $1 Billion. Now that’s a Jackpot.

Here’s a website with a lot of good information about what to do before and after you win the lottery. You can check it out here. Lucky You

One of our blog readers asked about using an EZ Tag on Houston’s Toll Roads when driving your RV., She saw that we used one when we traveled back and forth between Lake Conroe and Colorado River.

We already had one for our truck, and then got one for our RV right after we bought it in 2008. Having one makes your life a lot simpler, and cheaper, driving around the Houston area.

1. It doesn’t cost anything to get one. They’re free.

2. There is no monthly fee.

3. Some toll roads (i.e., the Westpark Tollway) and some exits only take the EZ Tag. No cash is accepted.

4. It’s cheaper on tolls. If you drive the toll road and pay manually at the booth, the toll is $1.75. But with the EZ Tag, it’s only $1.50.

5. This also makes it faster. During rush hours, the lines at the toll booths can be long.

The only slight downside is how you have to handle the tags themselves. As I said, we have tags for both the truck and the RV. The one in the RV is permanently mounted on the windshield, but the one for the truck is not.

If we are driving the RV and not towing, the rig registers as a 2 axle vehicle and we’re charged $1.50, just like a car. But when we’re towing, the system is smart enough to register us as two 2-axle vehicles, and we’re charged $3.00. But if we have the tag permanently mounted on the truck windshield, we will also be registered as an additional 2 axle vehicle, and charged a total of $4.50.

So when we’re towing the truck, we keep the tag wrapped in aluminum foil and tucked away in the center console. Then, when we’re driving the truck, we unwrap the tag and lay it out on the dashboard. Easy Peazy.

With Jan’s migraine sequence still in progress, tomorrow’s antics are up in the air, so we’ll have to see how it goes.

Missed It By That Much . . .

Well, we tried to see the movie Passengers down in Beeville this afternoon. After making a Wal-Mart run, we picked up our Amazon orders at the Lone Star Real Estate Office, and then dropped the groceries off at the rig.

Then, turning right around, we were about 5 minutes away from the rig when I got a text from Todd to see if I wanted to pick up a gate where a guard had called in sick. Of course, I said, “Yeah,” and we turned right back around.

Turns out to be a gate I’ve been to a couple of times before, but unfortunately, it’s one of the two with no cell service, but OK data service and text. And getting to the gate a little before 5 pm, I found that the phone situation had not improved one bit.

Our friend Barbara of Barbara and Tom Westerfield fame suggested that I try Tango, an app that lets you make calls over your Wi-Fi signal. So I gave it a try and installed it on my phone.

And it works . . . kind of . . . sometimes.

For some reason, which works out OK, I can only call Jan, and not any of my other contacts. It reads them all in and displays them, but when I tried to call Brandi or Chris, nothing happened. It doesn’t even try.

And then every now and then, it won’t call Jan either. It does try, though. But it just never actually dials.

On another note, I did hear from Molly Pinner, the seminar planner for the upcoming Escapade this March in Tucson, and Jan and I will be giving our Gate Guarding for Fun? and Profit seminar this time.

I don’t have the scheduled time yet, but I’ll let you know.

Some of you may not yet have seen the new LG ‘Wallpaper’ OLED TV that was debuted at the recent CES (Consumer Electronics Show)

It’s 0.1″ (2.57mm) thick, flexible, and sticks to the wall with magnets. The OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) screen produces one of the best images in the industry. And you can pre-order the 65″ version for only $8000.

Of course, next year it will only be $800, but it’s worth it to be the first in your neighborhood, or RV park.

Right?

I Guess It Wasn’t Meant To Be . . .

Tomorrow afternoon is Jan’s Pre-Op consultation, preparing for her lithotripsy on Friday morning.

She’ll be meeting with the anesthesiologist who will be taking care of her during her procedure.

Hopefully, after Friday, she’ll be done with all of this.

About 2 pm, I went outside to reinstall the new rear window awning. Turned out to be pretty easy except for a couple of missteps along the way. So I started with this.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

I first slid the awning fabric into the top frame and then slid the frame/awning into the window frame and locked it down. Next, I slid the lower torque tube onto the bottom of the fabric.

Starting with the left side, which still had the spring installed, I fastened my locking pliers into the spring end and cranked it 16 times, the number of turns that it took to unwind the spring. Then I slid it on the awning arm and locked it in place with the screw.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

Then it was on to the right side, where I had to drill out the rivets and remove that spring end so I could slide the fabric out.

I put the spring in and was ready to pop-rivet it in place when I remembered the pull strap. It has to be slid in the bottom groove on the torque tube opposite the fabric groove. Luckily, I remembered it.

Then, after adding the strap and riveting the spring end in place, I locked the pliers into place and cranked in the 16 turns, and then slid it on the awning arm. But when I went to remove the pliers, I ran into a problem.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

Due to the way I had placed the pliers, I could not unlock and remove them. Apparently, when I did the other end, I had locked the pliers in place the other way around. So now I had to get the spring end back off the arm, and after using a screwdriver to stop it from unwinding, remove the pliers, turn them over, and then lock them back in place.

Now I could rivet the spring end in place, and I was done.

Hopefully, tomorrow or Thursday, I’ll be able to take down the big passenger side awning and take it over to Sundowner Canvas so they can make a new one. And while there, I’ll pick up the rear awning for the other side.

About 4:20 Jan and I headed over to Bacliff to meet up with Wil and Cyndy Olsen for dinner at La Brisa Mexican Restaurant, where we’ve met them before.

We were once again hoping to get Wil and Cyndy together with our other friends, Jan and Dale Thompson. But a family illness took its tol,l and they had to drop out.

I guess it was not to be.

Jan had the Pechuga Monterey with a Grilled Chicken Breast.

I got a regular favorite for me, the Tortilla Soup.

Wil and Cyndy hope to have their truck out of the shop later this week and then move up to the Katy area for the repairs on their 5th wheel. All this is due to a wreck that they were involved in several months ago, where two vehicles collided, and then hit them.

Wrong place, Wrong Time.

Guys, it’s Not That Your Wife Is Ignoring You . . .

We were out the door a little after 1 pm today, heading up to Webster, first for brunch at Snooze once again. Then, after a quick stop at the office, it was on over to Wal-Mart for some shopping.

Next up we crossed El Dorado to the Sam’s Club right next door, with a first stop for gas. Since I last filled up a week or so ago, the price has jumped about 10 cents, up to $2.05. But still not too bad, and probably due to the Iranian thing.

Leaving Jan in the truck, I ran into Sam’s to pick up a month’s supply of her Joint Juice. Sam’s recently started carrying it again after dropping it for a while. But apparently, they got so many complaints, including from us, that they got it back in stock. Better and a little cheaper than ordering it from Amazon.

Heading toward home, we made another stop at Wal-Mart, this time the one in League City. I wanted to get a refund on Jan’s prescription that I picked up yesterday. As I mentioned in yesterday’s blog, when I got home, I found that though I had paid $65.26 for it, if I had known to ask for the GoodRx price, I could have only paid $31.55. A big difference.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

So I stopped by to get a refund. What they did was to first refund the $65.26 back to my credit card. Or at least they tried to.

For them to do this, I had to put my card in the machine, but each time they tried to process it, my card was declined.

What?

When I asked, was my card declining to accept the refund, or was their system declining to give it to me, they had no idea. And trying two more times didn’t help. So finally they just refunded me in cash.

Then, when I went to pay them the $31.55, I gave the young lady 2  $20’s and 2  $1 bills, part of the refund cash she had just given me. She just looked at the money, looked at me, looked at the money, and then back at me.

Turns out that because of the way she was doing this, she couldn’t just enter what I had given her and have the system tell her what to give me in change.

Finally taking pity on her, I told her that she should give me $10.45 in change, but I’m not sure she believed me. Then the lady at the next register, much closer to my age than the young lady, came over, looked at things, and told her I was correct.

Then she looked at me and said, “Nobody knows how to count change anymore.” I smiled and said, “That’s because we learned math B.C.”

The young lady, now more confused, asked, “B.C.?”

I said, “Yes, Before Calculators.”

Guys, it’s not that your wife is ignoring you, it may be that she’s just ‘lazy listening.’ At least that’s what Jan told me this morning when I was telling her something, and then waited for her response.

She had been working on her shopping list, but looked up when I stopped talking, waiting for her answer. She looked sheepish and asked me to tell her again.

When I commented that I thought she WAS listening, she said she was, but that she was ‘lazy listening’.

And I thought I was just being ignored.

I feel so much better now.

Jan Says I Speak ‘Band’

After a nice, quiet morning, Jan and I headed back down to the Three Acres Food Truck Park to have lunch. But this time we had more than Clam Chowder.

Of course, we did get Clam Chowder from the New England Lobster and Chowder truck,

Fried Mushrooms,

and of course, a couple of their Deep Fried PB&J Sandwiches for later.

But while that order was working, we walked right next door to the Sauce Time truck (or trailer, I guess)

Jan wanted an order of their Boneless Wings,

while I got one of their Gourmet Hot Dogs with a side of Loaded Tater Tots,

along with their Jalapeno Ketchup.

A lot of food, yes, but it meant we had a lot to take home for tomorrow, and the next day, too. And it was all delicious.

We had a great time at the Alvin Opry last night with a number of great performances, but I always enjoy watching the band, and what’s going on kind of behind the scenes. On stage, of course, but stuff that you probably don’t notice since you’re watching the performer.

And in the case of the Alvin Opry, it’s always fun, because there are always new performers on the bill, performers who have never sang with the band, and have had no rehearsal, either.

Now most of the band have been professional musicians for years, playing in both the studio bands and touring bands of famous acts you’ve heard of. So they’re pretty quick to pick up on what’s what.

But every once in a while, things go off track, i.e., the performer asks for the song in one key and then starts singing in another key. Or the steel guitar guy down at the far end didn’t hear correctly what the song was, and started playing a different one.

Or as happened last night, the singer wasn’t clear when he gave the sign for the band to go around again, i.e., do another verse, and the band thought he wanted to wrap it up at the end of the present verse. So he kind of got left hanging.

I’ve even got Jan noticing the little problems over the years, and she’ll lean over and say, “Tell me later what happened there.”

That’s why Jan says I speak ‘Band’.

Which is true since I was in a band in high school and another one in college, playing lead guitar and a little keyboards. And high school orchestras and marching bands, playing trumpet, baritone, and French horn.

And the one in college (Nashville) was pretty successful on the college/small club circuit, even getting some interest from a couple of the record labels. But all of us were just playing for the fun of it (and the girls, of course), so we never really pursued it.

But I guess our biggest gig was when we won a Battle of the Bands contest and got to be one of the two opening acts for The Mamas and The Papas.

And what is interesting about this is that backstage, everyone except Michelle Phillips seemed stoned out of their minds, and I wondered how they were going to perform. But when it was time for them to go on, their manager pretty much just shoved them out onto the stage.

Then the curtain went up, and like someone had flicked a switch, they were ON, and did a perfect set with no problems.

Amazing.

Yikes!

Today started with lunch at Gator’s once again, with Jan getting their Strawberry Walnut Salad with Grilled Chicken,

while I had the very best bowl of Baked Potato Soup I’ve ever eaten. And a bowl is a full meal, believe me.

Then it was back up the feeder to Wal-Mart for a few things we forgot yesterday, and then on to the HEB across the Interstate for a few more things.

Later, coming home, we made a PO stop for our mail. I had been expecting some additional medical bills from my spinal fusion, and I wasn’t disappointed.

But I was very surprised at the total cost of the entire thing.

$284,424.95!

Yikes!

Luckily, that’s not my cost.

So far, I’ve paid $1,365.04, and I’ve received a bill for $92.07 and another for $140.96

Not bad at all, especially considering the total cost.

But I was not happy with the other bill I got. It was from DJO, the company that made and supplied my bone graft stimulator.

When the company rep delivered it, he said it had been approved, otherwise, I would have had to pay about $900.

Well, today I got a bill for $905.00.

So tomorrow I’ll be on the phone to find out what’s going on

Prognosis: Wait And See . . .

I had my evaluation appointment with Dr. Wang, my neurosurgeon, this morning, and it looks like we’re going to Wait and See some more on my lumbar problems, specifically L4, L5, and S1. However, he said the biggest problem is between L4 and L5.

He saw no significant changes between my MRI/X-Rays taken in October 2021 and the ones done last month. So I guess that’s good to hear.

So, I guess we’ll see how it goes.

Lunch today was at King Food once again, always great, and we had the same waitress who waited on the entire family back on Christmas Eve.

I got a call this afternoon from Roland saying our Jeep was ready to go.

Yay!

I told them we’d pick it up tomorrow.

Then I got another call about 30 minutes later, saying the oil pressure Check Engine light had popped up again during one last test ride.

Bummer!

I know from personal experience how difficult these electrical bugs can be to track down.

Back in the day, I had a 1965 Triumph Spitfire like this, except mine had a roll bar and a white racing stripe.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

British cars back then (and maybe still) had a reputation for weird electrical problems. And my Spitfire was no different.

In fact, Lucas Electrical, also known as Lucas: Prince of Darkness, has entire websites devoted to their problems. And jokes like these:

* The Lucas motto: “Get home before dark.”
* Lucas is the patent holder for the short circuit.
* Lucas – Inventor of the first intermittent wiper.
* Lucas – Inventor of the self-dimming headlamp.
* The three-position Lucas switch – Dim, Flicker and Off.
* The Original Anti-Theft Device – Lucas Electrics.
* Lucas is an acronym for Loose Unsoldered Connections and Splices

And even products like these:

With my Spitfire, turning on the radio would also start the windshield wipers. And, about every 3rd time, turning on the headlights also turned on the left turn signal. And the left turn signal only worked about half the time.

So for the next few months after I bought the Spitfire, I gradually completely rewired it until everything worked right.

So I guess we’re lucky that the Jeep doesn’t have Lucas Electrics.

One thing I forgot to mention about Saturday’s visit up at Brandi’s is that in addition to the great Charcuterie Board she laid out for lunch,

she later made a delicious dinner of BBQ’d Chicken done in the smoker, along with Roasted Yukon Potatoes and Buttered Corn.

Fantastic!

They Had Me At PB, and Bacon too. . . .

Hopeful News –

Self-checkout is doomed’: Major supermarkets to scrap technology in huge overhaul

A consumer specialist is forecasting a grim conclusion for two contentious supermarket policies that could reshape shoppers’ habits. He claims self checkouts will be scrapped at Costco, Walmart, and Wegmans.

Supermarket Guru, Phil Lempert has projected retail tendencies for a quarter of a century, and his recent predictions might come as good news to some shoppers, including one who is threatening to sue after a self-checkout altercation at Walmart.

From a security standpoint, what’s happened is the retailers with self-checkout have had to add employees, whether it’s security or other employees to help people at self-checkout.

“So, you know you’re not accomplishing anything. You’re not reducing labour, you’re not getting a better shopping experience.”

From this article to God’s Ear.

Sonic had gone and done it. They’ve come out with a Peanut Butter and Bacon Cheeseburger.

And, even better, a Peanut Butter and Bacon Shake.

The reviews have been pretty good, with one of the shake reviews saying that the shake needs more pork.

Not something you often hear about a shake.

Of course, there’s my other favorite PB Bacon Cheeseburger, also with Jelly, from Texas Huddle

Yummm!

A guy in Wales noticed stuff being moved around in his shed every night, so he set up a camera.

And it seems he has a mouse who doesn’t like mess, so he tidies up every night.

And has every night for over two months.

OK, Who’s Buying The Hookahs?

I had my Lumbar Fusion 3-month follow-up this morning . . . well, it started in the morning, but it was afternoon before we were done.

My appointment was for 11 am, so we got there at about 10:30. And I was promptly presented with a stack of forms that needed to be filled out. They said they had no new paperwork from me since Nov. 2021, when I had my Cervical Fusion.

When I reminded them that I had just had a Lumbar Fusion 3 months ago, so how could they have no paperwork since 2021? She just shrugged her shoulders and closed the little window.

So I spent about 45 minutes filling out the same info over and over again. In the stack, I filled out my same personal data NINE times. I did get a couple of questions I have seen before, like Am I right-handed or left-handed.

And how old my mother and father were when they died, i.e., 88 and 83. And what they died from, i.e., postop infection and brain aneurysm. But finally I was done, and was told I would be called in just a few minutes.

And ‘just a few minutes’ turned out to be 45 minutes.

But at least I got a clean bill of health and was released from any restrictions about how much weight I can lift, and that I can take Advil again.

She did tell me that the rest of my spine is not in great shape either and is full of arthritis. So they want me back in another 3 months for another follow-up.

Afterwards, we rewarded ourselves with lunch at Stomp’s Burger Joint, always a favorite.

Jan got her usual Outlaw with Cheddar / Jack Blend, Picante Sauce, Diced & Grilled Jalapenos, Diced & Grilled Onions, Lettuce, Tomato, and Mayo.

And I got my usual HogWild with “Bacon Blended Into Patty”, Cheddar / Jack Blend, Lettuce, Tomato, Onion, Pickle, and Mayo.

These are both with 8oz. Angus hand-formed patties.

And of course, we got an order of their Half & Half with the Thick Onion Rings.

These onion rings are made in-house and are battered and fried to order.

Really good.

* * * * * * *

Though I don’t usually see them, regular readers know that I run ads on this site through Jetpack and WordPress, and I’ve noticed that lately, there have been a lot of ads for Ooka Hookahs.

And the fact that the ads keep showing up means someone is looking at/ordering from them. So who’s the closet hookah smoker out there?

Or maybe a Hookah-Smoking Caterpillar gave them a call.

Go ask Alice. I think she’ll know.
