Well, we still don’t know what’s going on with Mona and Doggone Crazy. When we got there about 1 pm, her truck was still locked up tight, and even worse, both of the other food trucks that were parked behind her truck are now gone.

Unfortunately, we don’t have a phone number to try and track her down.

Jan and I both agreed that we’ll try one more time, before we give up.

As far as today, we still got our dog fix by stopping off at our local Sonic for Foot Long Chili Cheese dogs, along with an order of their Ched’R Poppers.

Note how the hot dog extends about an inch past the end of the bun, and the bun is a full 12” long.

Delicious!

We’ve decided that Sonic will be our new ‘dog place’ if Mona is out of the picture.

Lawsuit accuses Chicago-based McDonald’s of deception on grounds that McRib has no rib meat

A lawsuit filed late last month took Chicago-based McDonald’s to task over the McRib sandwich, calling its name a form of false advertising.

As CBS News has reported before, the notorious 520-calorie sandwich contains just five simple ingredients: seasoned boneless pork dipped in BBQ sauce, sliced onions, and dill pickles in a toasted homestyle bun.

Despite its name and distinctive shape — its meat patty has been deliberately crafted to resemble a rack of pork ribs—the McRib does not contain any actual pork rib meat at all,” the lawsuit said. “Instead, its meat patty is reconstructed using ground-up portions of lower-grade pork products such as, inter alia, pork shoulder, heart, tripe, and scalded stomach.”

McDonald’s added that it does not use pork hearts, tripe, or scalded stomach in the McRib patty, and such items are not allowed in any of its pork products. The company said the McRib has a base of 100% seasoned boneless pork.

As it turns out, this was addressed on Mythbusters over ten years ago.

What exactly goes inside a McDonald’s McRib? Is it pork or beef? Is the shape important? Why call it a McRib if there’s no rib in the sandwich? Does the McRib contain the same plastic found in yoga mats? McDonald’s is giving the public answers on one of its most popular sandwiches.

McDonald’s has been using social media to field questions from customers and skeptics alike. In fact, for this video, McDonald’s asked high school teacher Wes Bellamy — who tweeted disparaging things about the McRib — to join Imahara on a visit to Lopez Foods, one of McDonald’s U.S. pork suppliers, to get some answers.

Imahara and Bellamy meet up with Lopez Vice President Kevin Nanke, who reveals at the food-processing plant what’s in the McDonald’s McRib patty — ground pork shoulder.

“The only thing in a McRib patty is pork, water, salt, dextrose — which is a type of sugar — and preservatives which are BHA, propyl gallate and citric acid which as used to lock in the flavor,” Nanke explains in the video.

When both Imahara and Bellamy admit to never having eaten a McRib before, Nanke shows them the process of putting together the McRib, complete with the BBQ sauce marinade, pickles, onions and buns. After they dig into their McRib sandwiches, Bellamy seems satisfied with their quest to get to the truth.

“All of my questions have been answered,” Bellamy says. “The sandwich is pretty good, man. It’s actually really good.”

I think it’s really funny that neither Imahara nor Bellamy had ever had a McRib before, even though Bellamy was tweeting about how bad they were.

But now he’s a believer.

So can we now expect lawsuits about what’s really in a Chicken McNugget?

What part of the chicken is the nugget?

And don’t even get me started on Moon Pies.

On another site, these are supposedly also in the McRib.

One blogger echoed my thoughts.

Do pork rectums normally have bones?

Toys and Tea Rooms . . .

Another early morning started when we left the rig about 9 am, heading up the road to Webster for Jan’s 9:45 dental appointment.

While she was there, I ran some errands, ending up at EPO (Electronics Parts Outlet), one of my favorite places to explore.

They have computer stuff, electronic parts and tools, science kits, and best of all,

TOYS…lots of Toys!

And as Jan says, I can resist anything but temptation. I saw a new helicopter that I just had to have. It’s a new 3 channel model that has both gyro-stabilizers and an accelerometer, so it’s very stable and easy to control.

And it’s a lot of fun to annoy the cats with. Of course, sometimes the cats annoy it back.

I’ve lost several copters that way.

rh-9098-550b

You can see it fly here.

As I was leaving EPO, I got a call from Brock’s Car Care telling me what they’d found on my truck. And as I suspected, a stuck brake caliper was the problem. So the caliper, pads, and rotor on the right side had to be replaced. But because of the higher pressure in the brake lines caused by the stuck caliper, this caused the left side to stick and grind down the pads and the rotor on that side too, though not as bad.

Brock’s said the total would be about $650. So next I called my extended warranty company to see what they would be able to take care of.

And the answer, as I suspected, was pretty much nothing. They ended up paying $70 of it.

Which was 1 brake caliper. Apparently, they pay for the bad part, but not anything the bad part damages. Huh?

Oh well, I’d been trying to remember to cancel them anyway. This just gives me an incentive.

I’d originally gotten the warranty free for the first year when I bought our 2004 Dodge Dakota in December 2007, and then kept it going since then. But this is the first time I’ve used it, because nothing has gone wrong so far, just maintenance stuff.

Jan was done about 11:30, so after picking her up, we drove over to Jason’s Deli for lunch. Jan loves their Muffulettas and Broccoli Cheese Soup, and I really like their Southwestern Chicken Chili, so we were both happy.

Finishing lunch, we headed home to the rig. While Jan fed the birds and then sat outside with Mister and enjoyed the nice weather, I went back to finish flushing out the water heater, now that I got the drain plug off.

I use one of these wands to do a better job of flushing it out. It goes on the end of your water hose and lets you get up in there and get all the ‘gunk’ out. You’d really be surprised how much stuff comes out.

RV Water Heater Cleaning Wand

One more job on my pre-flight checklist done.

We left out again about 3 pm so Jan could meet Lowell and Landon at Landon’s pediatrician’s office.

Brandi had noticed a lot of wax in Landon’s right ear and wanted to get it checked out. Jan was along for moral support and to help manage all the bags, bottles, and carriers that seemed to accompany any moving of Master Landon. He has his own ‘posse’.

It turns out that Landon does have a slight ear infection, so the doctor prescribed an antibiotic to take care of it.

I left them there while I went by Home Depot to get some more Teflon tape and then by Sam’s Club to pick up our prescriptions for the month.

Then I headed over to the house to wait for them. On the way, I got a call from Brock’s saying my truck was ready. But I had to wait for Jan to get there so I could go get it.

After Jan got there and we got our truck, we drove over to Texas Tea Room for supper. Then it was finally back home for the night.

It’s Dead, Jim . . .

Thought I’d start off today’s blog with a little musical interlude.

Here’s “Sweet Georgia Brown” on 3 Guitars and A Tractor, in German, no less.

“Sweet Georgia Brown” on 3 Guitars and a Tractor.

After coffee this morning, I got back to my truck’s power window problem. I wanted to pull out the motor-regulator combination and see if it can be repaired or will need to be replaced.

First, I had to get the glass out, by removing the trim strips from the window edge,

Door Removal No Trim Strips

Door Removal Trim Strips

and then the front window guide inside the door.

Door Removal Glass Track

After removing the two bolts at the bottom of the glass, I was able to carefully lift the glass out of the door and set it aside.

Door Removal Glass

Then, 5 more bolts and I was able to pull out the motor and regulator combination. It took a while to figure out how it works,

Door Removal Motor and Regulator

but finally, I found the culprit.

This piece of plastic had broken off, letting the cable that raises and lowers the glass, wear through the plastic guide and snap off.

Door Removal Culprit

I spent some time trying to figure out if it could be repaired, but it quickly became obvious that if I did fix it, it wouldn’t last.

So my next step was to order the replacement from Amazon that I found yesterday. Hopefully, it will be here toward the end of next week.

In the meantime, while I’ve got the door panel open, I’m going to take a look at a problem with my door lock. The key unlocks the door, but does not turn off the alarm. I fixed it once before, but I haven’t had any luck this time. I may have to replace the lock, and if so, now would be the time to do it.

Tonight was Jan’s night to get together with her former coworkers, like she does every year. This year it was at Café Adobe up in Webster, so I dropped her off a little before 5:30, and I headed over to one of my clients’ offices to work on configuring his new computers and router.

I picked up Jan about 8:15, and we finally headed home after another busy day.

Depots and Dinosaurs . . .

Today started out slow but ended up being fairly busy.

My first job was to get outside and caulk the roof seam right over the window next to my computer desk. We’ve had a lot of rain since we got here at Galveston Bay RV Park right before Thanksgiving. And during the last several downfalls, I’ve started to get some water leaking in down the inside of the window.

So I got out my ladder and my trusty caulk gun and went at it. The seam I was trying to seal is where the roof rolls down and meets the vertical side. I had caulked part of this a couple of years ago, but as it turned out, it was a length of the original caulk that had a lot of voids and holes in it. I caulked about 2 feet of the seam, and we’ll see how it does over the next several days.

The reason I wanted to get the problem fixed today is that we’re expecting 4 days of solid rain.

My next task was to call Westland Sales out in Clackamas, OR. I need a new door switch for our Splendide washer/dryer. Lately, it has developed an intermittent problem of not wanting to open at the end of the wash or dry cycle. Sometimes it will open immediately, sometimes it takes overnight.

So a new switch was needed. When I talked to Westland, the tech said it’s a known problem with this model, and he was surprised it lasted this long. A new one will be about $80 and will go out First Class today. I have always gotten great service from Westland.

Luckily, I will be able to replace the switch from the front and won’t have to pull the washer out of the cabinet.

About 3:30 Jan and I headed out for dinner and some errands. Our first stop was at a local feed store where we were finally able to find Jan some deer corn. Or at least we will find it there when we go back tomorrow afternoon after their shipment comes in. So hopefully that is taken care of.

Our next stop was at the TGI Friday’s across the Interstate from Baybrook Mall. We haven’t been there for several years and thought we’d try it again. Don’t know why we haven’t been back more. We’ve always enjoyed it, and this time was no exception.

Then it was right down the road to the Home Depot for a return. When I bought caulk last week, I thought I was buying one tube of clear and one of white, but I ended up with two of white. Guess they were mixed up in the bins

Our last stop was at Kroger’s. Jan’s going to make a big batch of veggie soup tomorrow and wanted to get a fresh onion and some garlic, along with a few other things.

Hot soup sounds great for these next few cold, rainy days.

Peaks and Fountains . . .

We’re both pretty much back to normal this morning (well, as normal as we get, anyway), and after 4 days at the rig, Jan was starting to get cabin fever, so about noon, we headed up to Clear Lake. Our first stop was Twin Peaks for lunch at Jan’s new favorite place. Mine too, but don’t tell her that.

Twin Peaks 6

She had her Spicy Hot Chicken Ranch Sandwich, while I had a cup of their really good Venison Chili and an order of the Average Joes, the mini sausage dogs with spicy mustard, chopped onions, and jalapenos. A great meal.

Twin Peaks Average Joes

And of course, it wouldn’t be Twin Peaks without our lovely server, Lauren.

Twin Peaks 4

Our next stop was Bed, Bath & Beyond for a couple of things. A blog reader said that they had a good K-Cup selection, and Jan wanted to check out their bed sheets

They did have a large K-Cup selection, but nothing that really caught our eye, and Jan didn’t find any sheets she liked, so our next stop was at a client’s office to install some updates.

Then it was off to Sam’s Club for a few things before heading over to our son Chris’ house to pick up Jan’s Mary Kay order that had come in yesterday.

Heading home, we stopped off at the Victory Lakes Wal-Mart for a few things. And I finally found some K-Cup Hot Chocolate.

Cafe Express Hot Chocolate

It was Cafe Express by Green Mountain Coffee, so we thought we’d give it a try.

We got home about 5:30, and then about 7:30, I fixed Jan and me some of the K-Cup Hot Chocolate to have with some of the cookies she bought.

The Hot Chocolate turned out to be pretty good, but I doubt we’ll buy it again. It’s more expensive in K-Cup form, and compared to the Swiss Miss packets, it’s more work.

With the packets, I can microwave enough hot water to make a cup for each of us at the same time, but the K-Cups have to be done sequentially. Plus, if you follow the directions, you’re supposed to run a cup of just water through your brewer to clean it out after you make the hot chocolate. Just more trouble.

One thing I did figure out is why all the K-Cup hot chocolates seem to have both sugar and sucralose (Splenda) in them. Some of our blog readers, as well as some online reviewers, don’t like the taste of sucralose and wonder why they put both in the K-Cups, but not the packets.

I think it’s because it won’t fit if you sweeten it only with sugar. I took an empty K-Cup pod, cleaned it out, and then tried to pour a packet of the Swiss Miss into it. And it overflowed the K-Cup. By a good bit.

Artificial sweeteners are much sweeter per weight than sugar, so they use as much sugar as they can, and then finish it off with Splenda. A bad break for people who don’t like Splenda or NutraSweet. Personally, I can’t tell the difference between sugar and Splenda or NutraSweet, but Sweet N Low tastes bitter to me. Different strokes, and all that.

It looks like the freezing weather is gone for a while, so I hooked us back up to shore water this morning. It did get down to about 27 degrees last night, but tonight’s supposed to be in the 40’s.

However, it was much colder last night up in the Katy area, where this fountain froze over.

Katy Frozen Fountain

You’d think we were up north, or something.

Moving On, Again . . .

Today was our day to oscillate back over to the Colorado River Thousand Trails near Columbus, TX., our second two-week stay here this season.

Since we only had about a 2-1/2 hour trip over from Conroe, we didn’t need to leave very early. So about 8:30, we drove down to the nearby Cracker Barrel for breakfast. CB usually has great coffee, and today was no exception. Perfect for a 40-degree morning.

And as sometimes happens at CB, Jan found a $35 blouse she really liked, to go with our $22 breakfast. Funny how it works out that way.

So is CB a gift shop with a restaurant attached, or a restaurant with a gift shop attached?

We pulled out of the Conroe TT about 11:30 and, after a very smooth trip, pulled into our site at Colorado River a little after 2 pm. And we once again got our favorite site, A2. And apparently, we really lucked up with that. The ranger said that the couple who had been in this spot had just left this morning. and a week early.

Lucky us.

Getting parked and set up, I did get to try out the new leveler pad/awning hook tool that I made. My homemade pads are very strong, but pretty heavy. And normally, I use the awning hook to push and prod them into position. But if the ground is rough, then the awning hook flexes and bends instead of pushing and prodding. So I’d been thinking about coming up with something a little stronger.

So, a couple of weeks ago, when we were going through stuff in our storeroom, I came across a metal mop handle with a screw-on mop head,

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

and this got me to thinking about how I could use it.

Remembering the extension poles I’ve used with rollers to paint ceilings, it seemed like the threads were pretty similar. So when I was in Home Depot the other day, I picked up a small foam paint roller, being sure to get the heaviest one.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

And as it turned out, the threads were a perfect fit.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

And removing the roller gave me a hook that is strong enough to move the pads around with no problem, and it’s still a great awning hook too.

I love it when a plan comes together.

A New Hack?

When I got up about 11 this morning, Jan was knee-deep in spring (winter?) cleaning in the rig. She had things emptied out from all the cabinets in the kitchen area, and was scrubbing them out, before cleaning the contents, and then replacing everything.

Thus, there was no walk for us today. But it looks like it should be OK for tomorrow morning, so we’ll see how it goes.

While Jan finished up with her cleaning and putting stuff back where it goes, I worked on blog and website stuff. I’ve learned to only help Jan with this stuff when she directly asks me for help. Otherwise, it’s almost guaranteed that I’ll put something back where it doesn’t belong.

My Next Hack: Our daughter Brandi gave us this really nice bathroom soap dispenser for Christmas.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

Bath & Body Works Touch Free SmartSoap Automatic Hand Soap Dispenser

It works great, and there are a lot of different scent refills available online. But it has one almost certainly designed-in ‘fault’. It seems to spit out about twice as much soap as you really need to wash your hands.

Of course, if you’re the soap manufacturer, that’s exactly what you want it to do to sell more soap refills at $14.95 a pop.

So what I want to do is figure out a way to change the amount of soap that comes out. And to do that, I see two different possibilities. First, I can try to change the actual amount of soap that comes out, based on how long the pump runs. And it’s a fixed amount, not dependent on how long you have your hand under the spigot.

Or I can try to hack the circuit so that the pump only runs as long as your hand is in place. Since the timing is possibly hard-wired into the circuit, it may be easier to just bypass the timing circuit altogether and wire it up so that the pump only runs as long as your hand is in front of the sensor.

So in the next few days, I’ll take it apart and see what I find. I’ll let you know how it goes.

I’m still trying to track down a new glass/LED screen for my son Chris’ Galaxy S5 smartphone. As I recounted last weekend, when trying to replace the cracked glass, I found the underlying LED screen was also cracked. So now I’m looking for a new screen combo, but I’m finding a lot of the ones for sale are not OEM, but some 3rd party parts. And the online reviews of these are not very good.

So now I’m shopping around for an original Samsung model, with a decent price, and a quick delivery time. Hopefully, I find something soon.

Tomorrow afternoon, we’ll be getting together with some other RV friends, meeting them at the great BBQ buffet up at Peter’s BBQ up in Ellinger. Really looking forward to it.

January 7, 2017

22°!

We had 24° forecasted for Kenedy last night, but here at the rig it went down to 22°. Tonight’s looking like 25°, so not much warmer than either.

Today’s high was 43°. But tomorrow’s looking up with 55/40, and then 73/56 on Monday. So nice. So we should be able to hook back up to shore water tomorrow.

One thing I also do during cold weather like this is turn on the light in the water bay. Since it has a regular incandescent bulb and not an LED, it provides a modest amount of heat, actually raising the temp about 10 degrees, enough to safeguard the pipes from freezing. We’ve had the coach down to 6 degrees, so we shouldn’t have a problem. But safe is as safe does.

Our last gate was Tues. night/Wed. morning, so I texted Todd this morning to tell him we’re bored and ask what’s on the horizon gatewise. He said they’re waiting on a number of gates to start up. Just waiting for the Company Men to call. Here’s hoping.

Jan and I tried to like last night’s 2-hour premiere of Emerald City, a retelling of the Wizard of Oz, we really did.

We normally like stuff like this. Grimm, Once Upon A Time, Sleepy Hollow, etc., are all favorites of ours, so we had high hopes for Emerald City. But we only lasted 20 minutes.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

When they referred to the show as a ‘reimagining’ of the Wizard of Oz story, we didn’t realize that they would ‘reimagine’ Dorothy as an illegal immigrant from Mexico who steals drugs for Auntie Em from the hospital where she works, and kills the Wicked Witch of the East by running her over in a police car she stole. And Toto is a German Shepherd police dog.

Oh, and the Wicked Witch of the West runs a brothel.

In hindsight, it’s amazing we lasted the entire 20 minutes.

Of course, they did the same thing a couple of years ago with Once Upon A Time in Wonderland, which was a spin-off from Once Upon A Time. By the time they got through with it, it was not only ‘reimagined’ but also unwatchable.

Which is probably why it only lasted one season.

But we did really enjoy the season premiere of Grimm. Really sorry that it’s the last season.

We had thought about heading down to Beeville this afternoon and catch the 4 pm showing of Passengers, and then have dinner at a well-recommended German place. But inertia kept us at the coach. So maybe tomorrow.

For dinner tonight, we had our leftovers from La Fonda on Main a couple of days ago, Jan added some of her delicious homemade Nachos.

All really good.

What A Burger!

Jan continues to get a little stronger every day. And again we both appreciate all the well-wishes from 100’s of friends and blog readers. Thanks.

We’ve had a number of emails from readers concerned that Jan was taking Cipro and now Levaquin, and the possible side effects from them.

First off, Jan has taken both of these for short periods of time in the past with absolutely no bad effects whatsoever. In addition, name one antibiotic that doesn’t have bad side effects for someone.

I’ve also read several times that if aspirin were developed today, it would be a prescription drug due to all the bad side effects that some people have from it.

So we appreciate everyone’s concerns, but so far she’s doing fine.

I took the panel off the microwave today, trying to fix a nagging problem. When you use it 2 or 3 times in a row, the microwave power will shut off. The timer keeps counting down, and the turntable keeps spinning, but the interior light goes off, and it stops cooking.

If I push in on the panel, the light comes back on, and it starts cooking again. But the longer it is used, the harder you have to push in on the control panel.

I’m pretty sure that the problem is with the microswitch that senses whether or not the door is closed and latched. When I reach in, I can wiggle the switch, so I’m pretty sure that it is the problem.

But the way it is mounted behind the frame, it’s hard to get to, so I used Gorilla Tape to try and lock it down in place. And in testing, it did three 3-minute runs heating water with no problem, so we’ll see how it works out.

About 2:30 Jan and I headed over to I-45 and the Victory Lakes area to eat at the Whataburger there. This time, along with our burgers, we each got a salad.

Jan got the Garden Salad while I got their Apple & Cranberry Chicken Salad.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

Both salads were really good, and we have enough left over for dinner tomorrow.

Heading back toward home, I stopped for gas at the HEB. Don’t know what’s really going on with the gas prices, but since the week before Christmas, the price has jumped 26¢ up to $2.19. Ouch.

Then we made a quick stop at the nearby Jason’s Deli for a cup of their Broccoli Cheese Soup for Jan’s lunch tomorrow while I’m at work.

Supposedly . . .

Supposedly . . .

Supposedly, GoDaddy has moved the blog to a new server after finally, ‘grudgingly’ admitting the problem was really theirs.

So, supposedly, the problem is fixed. But we’ll see.

The site has been up since 7:12 pm last night, BUT it should have been back up yesterday afternoon, but apparently, it didn’t stabilize until last night.

And of course, it was up for 28 hours and 40 minutes last week, leading me to believe that it was fixed then, too.

So as I said, we’ll see.

If it’s still up tonight, I’ll start posting regular blogs again.

Stay tuned!

Little Crunchy Meat Nuggets . . .

Jan had her dermatology appointment at 1:30, which only took about 45 minutes, so then we were back onto the other side of I-45 to have lunch at Black Bear Diner once again.

Jan got her new favorite, the Chopped Steak & Eggs, which is actually a breakfast item. But she gets it without the eggs, potatoes, and biscuits. Instead, she gets it with their Seasonal Veggies and a Side Salad.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

Lately, I’ve been getting their Sirloin Steak and Eggs, but this time I went back to my old fav, the Bacon Cheeseburger Salad.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

Really filling and only about 850 calories. I always remember to tell them to do the burger part as Medium, because the first couple of times I got it, the meat was Well-Done, i.e., hard and crunchy little meat nuggets.

But it was delicious this time.

Then it was back to the other side of the Interstate again for some Wal-Marting. We checked out their wings, i.e., chicken drums for our Air Fryer, but they didn’t have any drums, or wings, for that matter.

So we’ll check back again, or it’s off to HEB again. But we have enough for our dinner tomorrow night, so we’re good for now.

Since we started RVing almost 13 years ago, we’ve always had one of these Day Clocks.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

It has performed yeoman service all these years, including a couple of falls. But a few days ago, it quit working. I assumed it just needed a new battery, but it was for naught.

It was dead.

In other words, to paraphrase Monty Python –

It has passed on! This clock is no more! It has ceased to be! It has expired and gone to meet its maker! It’s bereft of life. It has kicked the bucket. It has shuffled off the mortal coil, rang down the final curtain, and joined the choir invisible!!

THIS IS AN EX-CLOCK!!

But since we’ve found over the years that it is pretty easy for us RV’ers to lose track of the day of the week, I went to look for a replacement, and remembering this is 2020, I decided to go digital, so I ordered one of these that came in this past Friday.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

Digital Calendar Day Clock

Jan really likes it, it’s easy to read from across the room, or across the rig, I guess, and you can make the text either yellow or white, and we chose yellow. It really stands out.

It was only after I ordered it and we got it, that I noticed that it was specifically designed for Dementia and Alzheimer’s patients to remind them what day it is. Hopefully, it will keep working a lot longer in case we actually need it for that.

But you never know.

Replacing the MicroSD card in my GPS was successful, and it was working fine after I downloaded about 5GB of replacement map data. Glad I got it working again.

I’ve had this one since 2011, and I wasn’t looking forward to replacing it, mainly because I didn’t really like any of the new ones.

Gentle Gonging . . .

Jan and I headed up to League City about 1 pm to have Turkey & Dressing at Cracker Barrel, it being Thursday, after all. And it also helped that we had a gift card for CB given to Jan as a Christmas present by Sonja and Lendell, Lowell’s parents.

Then after Jan got her Turkey fix, we headed back down to the Santa Fe area for a PO/Dollar General stop, finishing up with coffees from Cowboy Coffee.

Getting home, I finally had a chance to assemble Jan’s Wind Chimes, and then we sat outside in our new chairs and enjoyed the view and the gentle gonging of the chimes.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

We’re coming up on a year with our Rubbermaid storage shed, and I’ve been very happy with it. It survived the Texas summer with no fading or warping, and in fact, it still looks brand new. Very nice.

When we got the Jeep, I couldn’t mount our Garmin GPS as I did in the Dakota. There just wasn’t room. But with a little research, I found this one that works great.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

GPS Gooseneck Mount

It works great, and it was only $14.

The Echo Dot is normally only used on long trips to listen to music and news without having to keep finding a new station. To keep it connected, I just hotspot it to my phone, and it works great.

Tomorrow night we’ve got another Alvin Opry show, so probably not much of a blog then.

Much Better. . .

Jan felt a lot better today, so we headed out for lunch about 12:30. We headed out for our usual Sunday Denny’s/HEB/PO trek. But rather than her usual Ultimate Omelet, Jan had a yearning for a waffle. So still Denny’s, right?

Well, wrong.

Apparently, Denny’s hasn’t had waffles for a long time. What’s up with that?

I mean, IHOP (you know, the International House of PANCAKES) has waffles. 5 different types, as a matter of fact.

So why can’t Denny’s have waffles?

But overcoming this major disappointment, Jan went with Waffle’s low-rent cousin, pancakes.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

As well as an order of very crunchy bacon, just the way she likes it.

I, as usual, stayed the course with my Ultimate Omelet.

Delicious as always.

Next up, it was on over to HEB for a few things, but Jan was getting a little tired, so she stayed in the Jeep while I did the shopping. Then it was on the way back to the rig, with a quick stop at the PO.

A really nice day, especially since Jan is so much better.

No Armadilleauxs Were Harmed In The Writing Of This Blog . . .

Well, as often happens, our proposed lunch today was at Armadilleaux Cafe here in Santa Fe. But that was based on Jan’s hearing that they had Clam Chowder. But when I called to double-check, they said they only have it occasionally, and not on any schedule.

So Armadilleaux became Jason’s Deli, and Clam Chowder became Broccoli Cheese Soup. As well as a Quarter Turkey Muffuletta.

And my Clam Chowder became a bowl of the Southwest Chicken Chili and the Salad Bar.

And in another one of those examples of ‘synchronicity’ in our lives, you’ll see in the Retro_Blogs.™ below that back in 2011, we also ate at Jason’s and had exactly the same thing.

Well, it’s either ‘synchronicity’ or we’re in a rut. Take your pick.

Right before I posted this blog, I saw an announcement that this launch has been pushed back 3 or 4 days.

Stay Tuned.

The next SpaceX StarShip launch is scheduled for this coming Friday, January 10th, with a 97 minute launch window opening at 16:00 CST. And just like past Starship launches, this is a bigger, better ship.

Bigger as in over 6 ft. taller and 300 TONS heavier, and carries 25% more propellant.

This chart gives you an overview.

They also plan to do a simulated deployment of a Starlink satellite, and an in-flight Raptor engine relight.

And of course, an attempt to catch the returning booster at the launch tower.

Laptops and Live Writer . . .

My day started early with a 9:30 panic call from a client who was leaving at 1 pm for a business meeting out of the country, and both of her laptops were messed up. She was hoping I could get one of them working before she left.

Nothing like waiting until the last minute.

It took about 3 hours of going through the system before I finally got one of them working, and she left for her meeting a happy camper. The 2nd laptop will have to go back to the dealer since the hard drive is dead and it’s still under warranty.

I finally got home about 3:00 pm and tried to get some more stuff done on the rig. I did manage to get the drain plug loose on the water heater, but since I didn’t have time to shut off and drain the hot water, I left it at that until tomorrow.

After a nice nap, Jan and I headed out about 5:30 to meet Brandi, Lowell, and Landon at Texas Tea Room up in Friendswood, a place Jan and Piper checked out a week or so ago and really liked. Unlike most tea rooms, they were also open from 5 pm – 9 pm Monday through Friday. But we found out tonight that this is the last week they will be open at night. Apparently, they just didn’t get enough business then.

Too Bad. We really like the place, and it’s easier for us to go at night.

On a disappointing note, I’m sorry to report that I did not win the $355 Million Mega-Millions prize last night. Two tickets, one sold in Washington and one in Idaho, split the prize.

Bummer! I would have been happy with even a 3-way split.

That’s about it for today.

Spoonbills and RAM Sticks . . .

The tide was out this morning, so I got some more bird shots right out in front of the rig. I also saw our Roseate Spoonbills, but they flew off before I could get the camera.

I’m always amazed at the wildlife we see in this area.

GB Birds 1

GB Birds 2

GB Birds 3

On another note, I decided to try a better antenna for the Wi-Fi here in the park. The USB Wi-Fi adapter that I use for my desktop in the rig just has one of those 5″ stubby antennas, and I wanted to see if I could increase the 2 bars of signal I normally get.

So I picked up one of these Hawking HiGain Wi-Fi Antennas at Fry’s. It’s a little over 12 inches tall and comes with wall mounts if you need them. In my case, I just hang it from my crank-up TV antenna handle and connect it to my USB card using the supplied 5 ft. cable.

Hawking Antenna

Since this antenna is very directional, I wanted to have some way to aim it easily. With a little Googling, I found inSSIDer, a free program that does it all.

inSSIDer

The instantaneous graph at the bottom lets me turn the Wi-Fi antenna for the strongest signal.

And it does make a difference. I went from two bars to four bars, and occasionally, five bars on my signals. Between the new antenna and the free software, I may now be able to use the Wi-Fi signal at more parks when my Verizon Air Card is marginal.

The program also shows me the type of encryption used and the max speed of each Access Point, and even the manufacturer of the hardware. A really useful program.

Today was busy but not complicated. Leaving the rig about noon, I only went three places. My first stop was Fry’s Electronics to exchange the 4 – 2 GB RAM sticks for 2 – 4 GB sticks to finish upgrading the client’s two new computers.

Then it was on to the client’s office, where I installed the new RAM, and then started setting up and configuring the second computer. I’ll probably come back this weekend and install the computers and the new wireless router and get them online.

My last stop was the client’s house, where I’ve been fighting the AT&T problem. As I wrote yesterday, AT&T made the Static to Dynamic IP switchover yesterday, so all I had to do was set up their new wireless router and check everything out. I also installed a number of Microsoft updates that were needed, and after one last check, I headed home.

Jan had said we were going to have the leftover fajita beef nachos from Tuesday night at Monterey’s Little Mexico, so I decided we needed some Chicken Tortilla Soup and Queso & Chips to go with it. So I called ahead to Monterey’s and had it ready for me to pick up as I went by.

It made for a very delicious supper.

An Honor Delayed . . .

My great-niece Stahlie Calvin posted this news on Facebook.

My Uncle Theo Calvin is being awarded the French Legion of Honor from the Consul General of France. He’s also received several awards that were lost in the shuffle after the war.

The Legion of Honor is France’s most distinguished decoration and is bestowed for acts of bravery during the fight for the liberation of France during World War II.

Theo landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day, June 6th, 1944, and fought his way across France.

Jan and I headed out for an early lunch. We figured if we got there early enough, we could beat the crowd at Jimmy Changa’s, the new Mexican restaurant we ate at a week or so ago. And we were right. We got there about 11:30 and got seated right away, but by the time we left about an hour later, they were on a 45-minute wait.

Jan had the Ground Beef Taco Salad, and I had the Mexican Caldo Soup again. Jan said the Taco Salad was delicious, the ground beef was very well seasoned.

Leaving the restaurant, we checked out several feed stores and hardware stores in the area, looking for deer corn. Jan uses the deer corn to feed the many ducks in the area. But deer season has ended since we last bought any, and so it’s getting hard to find. We’ve got a couple of more places to check before we give up.

Our last stop was at our son Chris’ to see if I could fix a couple of problems with his and Linda’s laptop. Turned out deleting and reloading the printer driver fixed the problem.

We finally got home about 4:30 after another nice, but cold, wet day. And it looks the same for the next several days.

January 5, 2014

A Little Less Blah . . .

But still not back to normal.

But at least I didn’t have to get up at 9:30 this morning.

But we did head out about noon for lunch and some errands. Our first stop was at Jason’s Deli, where Jan got her Ham Muffuletta with a cup of Broccoli-Cheese soup, and I got a bowl of Chicken Chili and a side salad. Pretty much the usual for both of us.

Then it was on to the same client I tried to catch yesterday, with pretty much the same result. Called his cell but didn’t get an answer.

Then it was on to Wal-Mart for some things. One of the ‘things’ we were looking for was Hot Chocolate K-Cups for our new Hamilton Beach 2-Way Brewer.

Hamiliton Beach FlexBrew

Hamilton Beach 49980A 2-Way Single Serve Brewer and Coffee Maker

One thing I’ve noticed is that a lot of people must have gotten K-Cup brewers for Christmas because no matter where we go, we find the K-Cup coffee selection to be really picked over. At the same time, the regular coffee section was well-stocked.

And we still didn’t find any Hot Chocolate K-Cups either.

After another unanswered call to my client, we finally headed home, getting back about 3 PM. The first thing I did then was to disconnect and drain our shore water line, because we’re looking at 28° tonight and 26° tomorrow night. And having been burned once before in our early RV’ing days, I also disconnected our inline water filter and brought it inside. Once before, when I didn’t do this, I found it’s very difficult to actually drain all the water out of one of these filters, and when I left it outside in 20-degree weather, it split wide open. So now it comes inside, and we’ll just stay on the rig water until Wednesday or Thursday when things warm up.

One thing that was interesting this morning was watching the front come through. At 10 am, the outside temp here at the rig was 66 degrees. 40 minutes later, it was 50 degrees. That’s a fast drop.

84 cents a gallon . . .

First up this morning, I called Moen to order a new hose for my Renzo model kitchen faucet.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

And as reader Ray McElhenry reminded me, with Moen’s lifetime warranty, they’re sending one out to me one free, and that includes shipping. Nice.

About 2:15, we headed out for the afternoon. Our first stop was the Home Depot about 5 miles down the road. Since I was getting the replacement hose from Moen, I don’t need the ‘Not So’ Universal, ‘Doesn’t’ Fit All Brands replacement hose any more and want to get my $27 back.

Then it was on to Fry’s Electronics for a few things and also to check out possible new computers for a client. And of course, it’s always fun to just walk around the place.

Then we headed back up to The Woodlands to have dinner at Grimaldi’s Pizzeria. We got there a few minutes after 4 pm, which was perfect. Between 3 and 4 pm, Grimaldi’s re-stokes their coal-fired pizza oven, so no pizzas until they’re done.

We had our usual order of a Small Salad, which we split.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

In fact, it would easily feed 4 people,

And we had the large pizza with mushrooms, pepperoni, jalapenos, Italian sausage, and meatballs.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

By getting the large one, we have half of it left over to take home for later.

After a great meal, it was back up to Conroe for stops at Sam’s Club and Wal-Mart for a few things. Jan had planned to pick up a prescription at Sam’s, but it wasn’t ready because they didn’t have enough pills to fill it, so we’ll pick it up tomorrow afternoon.

Then it was on across the Interstate for the pleasant task of getting gas at Kroger’s. And I say ‘pleasant’ because it cost me only 84.9 cents a gallon. That’s got to be pleasant.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

Of course, that was because I’m still getting the $1 a gallon discount from our gift card purchase before Christmas. But even without the $1 discount, $1.849 is nothing to laugh at.

Tomorrow we’ll start wrapping up our two-week stay here and get ready to move back to the Colorado River Thousand Trails on Wednesday.

January 5, 2016

Well, It’s Official . . .

I found out last night that Jan and I will be giving our Gate Guarding seminar at the upcoming 56th Escapees Escapade, July 24th – 29th, in Essex Junction, Vermont.

We first gave this seminar, “Gate Guarding for Fun? and Profit“, at the 55th Escapade last March in Tucson, AZ, and with another episode of gate guarding under our belt, we’ve got even more good info to pass on.

See You There!

Jan and I headed out for our walk this morning, a little after 11, and with the sunshine, 50° temps, and just a little wind, it was about perfect walking weather. The only problem is that we know too many people here. So, between meeting up with Jim and Claudia Horak, Dave and Janice Evans, and Ed and Debi Hurlburt, our minutes/mile rating on Runkeeper was pretty useless.

But we had a great time catching up with everyone, and even better, extended our walk to 1.21 miles, our longest yet. Hopefully, in the next few weeks, we’ll get back up to 2 miles, where we were a while back.

About 2:30 Jan and I made a trip into Columbus to pick up a few things. I needed a few things from the hardware store, Jan wanted some things from Brookshire Bros., and I wanted to pick up some lottery tickets for the $145 Million Mega Millions drawing tonight and the $450 Million Powerball drawing tomorrow night.

You can’t win if you don’t play.

But before we left the park, we stopped off to say ‘Hi’ to Gordon Pendergast and his wife, Merlyn. They’re parked in their 5th wheel up on the ‘A’ loop, but they’re leaving Thursday, so we’ll have to catch them back at Lake Conroe for dinner.

Passing the Colorado County Oil Co-op, I saw diesel for $1.85 a gallon, the lowest I’ve seen so far. I’ll probably fill up the next time we’re back over here, and if I’m lucky, it’ll be even cheaper then.

For dinner tonight, we were going to finish off the last of the Christmas dinner leftovers, but since they were getting kind of skimpy, Jan wanted to bulk it up with some mashed potatoes, so we decided to try the Ore-Ida Steam n Mash Potatoes.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

They turned out to be very easy, and very good. Not just some powder stuff, but these are actual chunks of Russet potatoes that you just steam in the bag in your microwave. Cook for 6 minutes, let them rest for 2 minutes, and pour into a bowl. Then mash and mix with 2/3 cup of milk and 2 Tbsp. of butter. Then serve and eat.

And we both thought these were really good, probably as good as any mashed potatoes we’ve had. Recommended.

I got an email today from Spartan Chassis announcing their new Spartan Mobile App called Spartan Connected Care. Available for both Android and Apple, it will give you diagnostic codes specific to your make, model, and year, maintenance schedules, service locations, pre-trip inspection lists, shows & rallies where Spartan reps will be attending, and more. So check it out.

If you have a Freightliner chassis, they have something similar called Freightliner 24/7 Direct.

Tomorrow we’re driving down to the Clear Lake area to spend the day taking care of some errands, and catching up with some friends. Looking forward to it.

When I Said I Wanted Some Winter Weather . . .

I didn’t mean like this.

Today the high temp was 68° with a low scheduled tonight of 33. Then tomorrow’s high is 34° with a low of 25.

I do not like the direction this is going.

Jan and I had originally planned to take in a movie as part of our San Antonio day trip today, but that didn’t happen. I had a lot of trouble sleeping last night due to the fact that I’m normally working when I was trying to sleep.

So we dropped the early morning start and left the rig about 2 pm with our first stop at Lone Star Real Estate to pick up two days’ worth of Amazon deliveries. Then it was on to the Sam’s Club/Wal-Mart in the City Base area of San Antonio for some shopping.

Finishing up there, we met our long-time friends Jim and Peri Dean at La Fonda on Main for dinner.

Besides Magic Time Machine, La Fonda on Main is our other go-to place in San Antonio, and it’s another place we’ve been eating since the 1980’s. And the place itself has been open since the 1930’s hosting such notables as Dwight Eisenhower, George Patton, Yul Brynner, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, and of course, us.

Between the four of us, we all went for something a little different.

Jim went in the fish direction with their Salmon selection,

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

while Peri went for the vegetarian course with the Sweet Potato Enchiladas.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

Jan got her go-to dish, the Chile Relleno,

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

while I had my usual beef selection with the Carne Asada.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

Once again, Jan and I only ate about half of our entrees, with the rest to take home. This left us with enough room for Jan and me to share our usual Tres Leches.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

But this time, we got an upgrade with their new special, Chocolate Tres Leches. And following our lead, Jim and Peri split one too.

Even better.

After spending another hour talking, and then saying our good-byes, and making a pit-stop at the Valero in Floresville, we got home about 8 pm.

Passing through Floresville, even as full as we were, we drooled as we passed the Whataburger there. This again brought our question about why Kenedy/Karnes City doesn’t have a Whataburger of our own.

At first, we wondered if the population was too small, but the K/KC has a combined population of about 6300, plus all the surrounding countryside. This is only about 100 people fewer than Floresville.

Plus, with all the oil stuff going on around here, they’re losing a lot of money from the oil workers. Oil guys loved Whataburger, and some of them eat there every day when they can. And when we’ve been on gates with one nearby, the guys would regularly bring back burgers for Jan and me.

When we stopped to pick up our packages at the real estate office, I asked Nancy Christian, the owner (and the owner of our RV Park), why K/KC doesn’t have a Whataburger. She said, “Because they’re stupid.”

She said that a while back, she and her husband had been at the one in Floresville and saw what were obviously some big-wig corporate types visiting the location. So her husband went over and talked to them about it, and was told it sounded interesting and that they’d look into it. But nothing so far. But even then, we certainly won’t get one in the next 5 or 6 weeks that we’ll be here. Bummer!

WE WANT OUR WHATABURGER!

Settling In Back Home . . .

Jan really relished her first night back in her own bed. She’s getting around better and better all the time.

But her favorite thing was to be able to take a shower again, the first one since Monday morning before she got sick.

About 12:30, Jan got a call from Clear Lake Regional Hospital asking about her recent stay, and also giving her the login info for MyHealthOne, the hospital website area that shows all of the tests done and the results, procedures done, and diagnoses.

Really helpful for Jan since she likes to document everything. We also got the phone number of her urologist so she can set up her appointments for next Wednesday and Friday.

About 4pmwe headed out for dinner at Phở»Ÿ 20 and then HEB for some supplies.

This visit to Pho 20, we both went for something a little different. Of course, we did start out with our favorite House Crunch Salads.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

Then, both wanting soup of some kind, we got the White Meat Chicken Pho with added veggies.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

Normally, their Pho comes with the broth, the slices of white meat chicken, and rice vermicelli noodles. Then there’s the garnish on the side.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

This gives you jalapenos, cilantro, Thai basil, bean sprouts, and a squeeze of lime juice. All great additions.

After tonight, this Pho has become my new favorite dish here. Well, along with the House Crunch Salad, of course. I’ve always liked soups, Hot & Sour at King Food, Chicken Tortilla Soup at Monterey’s, etc., so this is a great addition to my choices.

One thing kind of interesting about Jan’s stay was the nurse anesthesiologist who came by on Tuesday to put a stent in for the anesthesia for Jan’s procedure the next day.

Just talking, she asked if we were from around here. And when I told her that we had a house here, but that we were really full-time RV’ers. She turned around with a big smile and gave me a fist bump, saying, “So are we.”

Turns out she’s a contract nurse. She and her husband are semi-snowbirds, spending summers in the New England area and winters down south. But pretty every season is spent in a different area of the country. Then wherever they are, she has no problem getting a job at a local hospital.

Neat!

Looks like the weather this weekend will be nice enough for me to reinstall my rear awning and then take down the big one on the passenger side to take over to Sundowner and pick up the other rear one.

Needless To Say . . .

They’re Still Working On It.

Since the last few days had been sunny enough to dry out the Christmas decorations, I took them down this morning so we could take them over to the storage room this afternoon on our way over to the Denny’s for breakfast.

Then it was on to Wal-Mart before coming home.

On the GoDaddy front, I’m trying to get the blog moved to a new server. I should know more tomorrow.

Stay Tuned.

Beware The Caps Lock Key . . .

Jan and I had a nice, quiet day at the rig, not doing much of anything. Very nice.

About 4 pm, we headed over to Dickinson to have dinner once again at Los Ramirez Mexican Restaurant. And I think we’re just about at the point where we can just sit down and say, “The Usual”, since we always get the same thing.

Jan gets her Pechuga Rellena,

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

but without the rice.

So that leaves her with Shrimp and Broccoli. covered with a large Chicken Breast topped with Melted Cheese. And it’s not just a few shrimp hiding out under there, but an entire school.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

I, of course, got my usual Beef Fajita Taco Salad.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

For some reason, though, they look at me funny since I don’t eat the taco shell, just the good stuff inside. I think the shell has about as many calories in it as all the goodies inside.

Then, after dinner, we drove over to Nassau Bay to check in on a friend of ours who was having printer problems. And of course, as it often happens, it all worked fine while I was there.

This has happened often enough over the years that I’ve often thought about having some of those life-size cut-outs made of me, glaring. Then I can rent them out to clients to stand next to their computer so I can intimidate it into correct operation.

Three times in the last few weeks, I’ve had clients call me with login problems. And in two of the three cases, it was because they had accidentally pressed the Caps Lock key without realizing it. So they were typing in their password incorrectly without knowing it.

This is why I really don’t like password fields that don’t allow you to either show the password, or at least have the Eyeball in the field so you can double-check it.

In the third case, they had a flaky key on their keyboard, which they didn’t notice. If you ever suddenly have a problem logging into something, go to Notepad or some other text editor to be sure that what you think you’re typing is what you’re actually typing.

Back In The Groove . . .

Although we had a great time this past weekend, it was great to be back home and back in the groove.

Our new (to us) Jeep Liberty performed flawlessly, with the only problem being the missing Cruise Control. There isn’t one.

Apparently, for some reason, a lot of Jeep Liberty’s are ordered without Cruise Control. Some many in fact that there are aftermarket kits available to retrofit it, kits that look just like the factory version. So I’m looking into that.

One reason is to help keep my speed down. When we were coming back down US290, where the speed limit is 75mph, that’s when I really missed it. I would have just set it for 79 or so, and cruised along.

Otherwise, you find yourself pacing a car out in front of you, holding a safe distance behind. But here in Texas, that can be a little dicey. At one point, I had been following a big red diesel dually pickup for about 20 miles, when I looked down and found I was doing 91mph!

I really need a Cruise Control!

I’ve had several purchase inquiries about the Wind Chimes that our son Chris makes, both the smaller ones he made for Jan,

Jan's Wind Chimes Better

or the much bigger one he made for himself.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

This one gongs like Big Ben.

Jan and I headed out this afternoon with our first stop at the Three Acres Food Truck Park, and the New England Lobster Truck, for Clam Chowder, Deep Fried Nutella Sandwiches (they were out of the PB&J’s), and an order of Fried Mushrooms. Delicious as always.

Then it was on up to the office to pick up some Amazon orders that came, and then on over to Wal-Mart for a few things, including a couple of these nice Adirondack chairs to put out on our patio to listen to Jan’s new Wind Chimes.

Really nice chairs, and only $30. Very nice.

And We’ve Got Leftovers . . .

We were out the door this morning by about 10 am, heading up to Conroe to meet up with Debi and Ed Hurlburt at Vernon’s Kuntry Katfish for our monthly get-together.

One nice thing about Vernon’s is that they bring you out a plate of Hushpuppies and Pickled Green Tomatoes first thing, kind of their version of Chips and Salsa, I guess.

Jan and I both got pretty much versions of the same thing, the Seafood Platter,

with Katfish (of course), Shrimp, Oysters, Scallops, and a Crab, along with Cole Slaw, Pinto Beans, and Fries.

Delicious, and we had leftovers!

Saturday, we’re heading up to Brandi’s in Katy, so I could do some updates to Landon’s Ender 3D printer.

Under The Weather . . .

Both of us.

A couple of days ago, Jan developed a nagging cough, along with a bit of runny nose, coupled with a general ‘blah’ feeling.

For my part, I woke up in the middle of the night with another attack of BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo). I rolled over and suddenly felt like I was on a wild carnival ride. And when I tried to get up about 8 am, I had to hold onto things to keep from falling over. So I went back to bed, only getting up around 10 to call into work.

But by this evening, Jan’s cough had pretty much disappeared, and I could walk without bouncing off the walls. So tomorrow looks to be better.

Besides my vertigo, the other interesting thing that happened last night, or this morning, really, was a really heavy thunderstorm that rolled through about 4 am, ending up giving us over 1.1″ of rain. Doesn’t seem to have hurt the new concrete pads.

As far as tomorrow, we’ll see how it goes.

Don’t Try This At Home!

Came across this article/video the other day about a professional high-diver who works for RCL Cruise Lines, especially the Oasis-Class ships like Harmony Of The Seas.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

Check out the link above for the video.

A professional high diver named Ginni Van Katwijk gave her 84.9 thousand Instagram followers a taste of what it’s like to jump from a 55-foot diving board into a pool onboard Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas.

Even the bravest of guests would not be allowed to try this stunt for themselves – with Van Katwijk only permitted because she is a trained professional working with Royal Caribbean.

In addition to serving several contracts with the Miami-based cruise line, she has competed in high diving around the world, including as part of the prestigious and highly competitive Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series.

It’s amazing how small a large pool can look from up that high.

I’ve jumped from that high, or a little higher actually, but it was into the Gulf of America, so I was pretty sure I wasn’t going to miss the water.

Jan really likes the coffee flavors I keep coming up with. For example, today’s cafe du jour started with a pot of Moose Munch’s Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter coffee, and then I grated a couple of frozen Reese’s Pieces into the cup before I added the hot coffee. After adding a dash of Sweet & Creamy Cold Foam, I heated it up in the microwave for 30 seconds.

Finished off with a spurt of Whipped Cream, Jan said it was FANTASTIC!

And a couple of days ago, I started with a pot of Trader Joe’s Chocolate Hazelnut brew, added a couple of tablespoons of Hazelnut Creamer, and then grated in some of the Honduran chocolate that we brought back from our cruise.

Then I topped it off with a squirt of Caramel Macchiato Cold Foam.

Jan says we should open our own coffee shop, and I told her I already have a name for it.

We’ll call it Ishmael’s.
