Even Cat Mothers . . .

Today was a Hide-Out-From-Black-Friday day so we never left the rig. Well, I did go outside to bring in a couple of Amazon packages, but that was it.

A little after 1pm Jan heated up the two take-home Cracker Barrel Fried Turkey Dinners that we brought home yesterday so we could have Thanksgiving leftovers today.

Still delicious

Then for dessert, we had 1/2 of the Pumpkin Pie Slice we got with our CB dinners, as well as a slice of the Crown Royal Whisky Maple Pecan Pie that I picked up from Spec’s Liquor this past Monday.

And we both agreed that this is the best Pecan Pie we’ve ever eaten. You can definitely taste the Crown Royal in it.

After a couple of slices, you could definitely get a buzz on.

When we were at King Food for lunch on Wednesday, we marveled at all the large take-out orders being picked up. Some of them covered 3 tables loaded with large aluminum pans covered in foil.

And we heard the owner talking about having over a thousand wings on order over the next couple of days.

Wings like these.

These are their Crispy Honey Garlic Wings. Really, really good.

Mothers are all the same.

Your child is missing, and you are frantically searching until you find him.

And after assuring yourself he’s OK, POP!

Then it’s ‘You just wait until I get you home!”

Even Cat Mothers.

Home Again…At least for a while…

After spending the night in the Walmart parking lot in Breaux Bridge, LA, we pulled out about 8 am, heading for Houston.

I had been debating whether or not to fuel up before leaving for Houston.  I knew I was going to have to fill up before we parked in Houston, or Dickinson, actually.

We will be parked for at least two months, and, if possible you always want to park with a full tank of diesel.  It reduces the amount of condensation that forms in the tank,  which leads to water in your fuel, which is bad.

Anyway, I probably had enough fuel to make it home, but, when it comes down to it, it’s not something I want to take a chance with.  So I was looking for a place to fuel up in Breaux Bridge, but I wasn’t having much luck.

I circled thru two truck stops without finding a space.  All the semi’s were fueling up, and I really hate to get in the way of guys trying to make a living. So I decided to head on down the road a ways. Our ‘The Next Exit’ book said there was another place 18 miles down the road.

‘The Next Exit’  is a must-have book for every RV’er. It lists what is at every exit on every Interstate in every state in the US. And it also shows who has diesel and ‘big-rig access” so we know we can fit.

This time we lucked out. The Texaco truck stop was not very busy.  Maybe because it had the slowest pumps I’ve encountered in a long time.  Usually truck stop pumps have a bigger nozzle and pump the fuel much faster than regular pumps. I mean, when you’re taking on 3 or 400 gallons like semi’s do, you don’t want to be there all day. It’s bad enough when I only need 125 gallons or so.

So by the time we pulled back onto the Interstate, it was 9 o’clock. And we had traveled 18 miles. That’s 18 miles per hour! At this rate it’ll be after Thanksgiving before we get to Houston.

But the rest of the trip turned out to be a breeze. We turned off I-10 onto FM146 and cruised on down to Dickinson, taking a brief detour down on 96 to the Buc-ee’s to top off the tank before we parked.  And really, really wished I’d waited to fill up here. Diesel was 22 cents a gallon cheaper than in Louisiana. That’s over $26.00 cheaper!  Darn!

Anyway, by 2:30 we were parked in our same site as last year here at Galveston Bay RV park on Dickinson Bayou.

At 6:30 we met all the kids at the new La Brisa on I-45 in League City. It was really great to see all the family after nine months on the road.

It’s good to be home again…at least for a while.

IHOP and Mt. Vernon . . .

First off, Jan and I want to wish all our friends and family, and our many loyal readers, a Wonderful and Happy Thanksgiving.  Jan and I certainly have a lot to be thankful for, and we hope you do too.

During the night it got really windy as the cold front started to move in a little bit.  The real front will start coming in tomorrow afternoon. The high tomorrow is supposed to be 81. But the low tomorrow night is going to be 41!

A big difference of 40 degrees.

Then on Friday the temps are supposed to be 58 and 34. Hopefully winter will stay around for a while.

Jan was up early making her dishes for Thanksgiving dinner tomorrow. This year she’s doing her world-famous Sausage Balls and her equally famous Squash Casserole.

Tomorrow, a little after 10 we’re going to head up to our daughter Brandi’s BFF Shawna Oakley and her family’s house in Katy, TX, on the western outskirts of Houston proper.

Shawna and Landon

Here’s Shawna holding Landon at the restaurant after his christening a few weeks ago.

On the way we’ll stop off at Brandi’s to pick up the HoneyBaked Ham and the two pumpkin pies we’re also taking. We stored them there since we didn’t have room in our fridge.

We’ve been having Thanksgiving dinner at Shawna’s for over 10 years, with an occasional Christmas and Easter thrown in for good measure.

And the first thing everyone says when we walk in the door is “Where’s the Sausage Balls?” She didn’t make them one year and there was almost a riot.

She won’t make that mistake again.

About 2:30 we drove up to Kemah to have “lupper” at IHOP, with Jan having a Soup and Sandwich, and I had breakfast.

Happy Thanksgiving . . .

I was up about 9 this morning because I had a couple of chores before we head out for our Thanksgiving feast.

My first chore was to empty the backseat of the truck because we need to go by and pick up Lowell’s sister, Sherry since she’s going to be having dinner with us today. I also wanted to remove the ball hitch from the rig and reinstall our Blue Ox tow bar system.

Next I dug through the bins and found my 100ft tape measure so I could measure the two possible sites that might be available tomorrow.

While I was working outside the rig, Kathy Brophey stopped by to say HI. She and her husband Dennis have been here at Galveston Bay RV Park since this past Monday. They’ve been reading our blog for several months, and after reading about our time here, decided to stay for a month and check out the area. We’re going to get together for dinner sometime next week.

After finding the tape measure, I drove over to the other two sites we may move to tomorrow to check them out.  And it’s going to be a tight fit.

The site that’s empty right now, site 76, is only about 34 feet long. If we could put our tires right at the end, we could fit with the overhang, but there’s a tree in the way so that won’t work,

Site 77, the one we were supposed to move into tomorrow, is still occupied. We were told they were going to move it several days ago, but couldn’t get their slides in. It’s on a curve, and is 46 feet on one side and 39 on the other, so we’d fit, especially with the overhang.

I guess we’ll find out more tomorrow when the office opens.

About 10:45 we headed up to Brandi’s to pick up Sherry, and then back down I-45 to La Brisa where we were meeting Chris, Linda, and Piper for the Thanksgiving buffet.

Everything was good, except the dressing. Readers will remember that Jan’s pretty adamant that if it ain’t cornbread, it ain’t dressing. And this was just those little cubes of white bread with some spices and chopped celery and onions and stuff. Yuck!

But everything else was delicious. And along with the usual traditional Thanksgiving dishes, being a Mexican restaurant, they did have some Mexican dishes too. Tamales, great cheese enchiladas, carnitas, refried beans, etc.

All in all, a great meal. Certainly a possibility for next year.

Saying our goodbyes, and dropping Sherry off, we headed home via King Food, hoping to get some Hot & Sour Soup to take home to go with our King Food leftovers from Sunday night, which was going to be supper tonight.

But they were closed. Bummer.

After calling a few relatives to wish them a Happy Thanksgiving, it was time for one of those full-of-turkey Thanksgiving naps. My head hit the pillow and I was gone for about two hours. Nice.

About 5:30 Brandi called from Oklahoma to check in and double-check we got all the photos they sent.

Then about 7:30 Jan heated up our leftover Chinese supper for a great supper.

Brandi and Lowell sent these Landon pics down from Oklahoma.

Brisket, Ribs, and Cobbler, Oh My!

Today, being our last day here in Marble Falls, started off in a relaxing way, but picked up as the day progressed.

It began with us out on the dock watching Lowell, Brandi, and Landon tooling around the lake in the paddleboat, while drinking our Starbuck’s coffee that Lowell had picked up earlier. I told Lowell we were getting spoiled and now expected him to deliver coffee to us every morning at the rig.

He said “No”.

Darn.

Lake Paddleboat 1o

Lake Paddleboat 2

Lake Paddleboat 3

After a nice, slow morning, we got ready to head down south about 60 miles to have ‘lupper/linner’ at one of our all-time favorite BBQ places, The Salt Lick BBQ. In fact we all like it so much, Brandi and Lowell had their wedding reception dinner there in 2010.

Lowell, Brandi, and Landon were driving straight there, but Jan and I left earlier because we were making a detour a little further south to pick up our friend Gina. Gina lives on a 600 acre cattle ranch near Fischer, and we always get together when we’re in the area.

Salt Lick BBQ 1

We got there about 1:45 and found the usual large crowd waiting for a table. But it was even more busy when we were here last February.

Brandi and Lowell had beaten us there by a few minutes and already had us on the list, but even then they said it would be a 30-45 minute wait.

Salt Lick BBQ 2

Our wait turned out to be about 40 minutes so I guess they split the difference. But this place is worth pretty much any amount of wait.

This is one of the 3 pits they have in operation, cooking up Beef Brisket, Pork Ribs, Sausage, and Turkey. That is a lot of good meat there.

Salt Lick BBQ Pit2

They have your BBQ sandwiches and plates, but with a two-meat combo plate with all the fixin’s being priced at $15.95, the best deal is The Family Style Dinner.

For $19.95 per person (Landon was free), they bring out platters of Brisket, Ribs, and Sausage, along with Beans, Potato Salad, Cole Slaw, and Bread, and then just keep it coming until you say “No Mas, No Mas”, or just explode, whichever comes first. None of us has ever exploded, but it’s been close.

And strange as it may seem, no matter how full we are at this point, we always seem to have room for their Homemade Blackberry Cobbler, Peach Cobbler, or Pecan Pie. We usually get a Cobbler Combo, which is half Blackberry and half Peach. And of course it’s got to be a la mode with Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla.

By the time we finished up, dropped Gina off, and got back to the lake house, it was after dark.

A long day, but well worth it.

Tomorrow we’ll head back to Houston about 9am, but first we’ll stop at the famous Blue Bonnet Café on our way out of town.

Heading Home . . .

After our first full night’s sleep in 3 months, we left the Gate Guard Services’ Whitsett yard a little before 10am, heading for our winter home at Galveston Bay RV Resort in San Leon, TX. And it was really fun bringing in the satellite dish, hooking up the truck, and unplugging the shore power with 40° of cold rain, but it was worth it to be on the way home.

Our first stop was about two hours later at the Buc-ee’s in Luling for coffee and kolaches, and then it was back on the road for another two hours before our next stop. And that stop was much better than coffee and kolaches. We met Landon, Lowell, and Brandi at a gas station near their home so we could see them for a few minutes. Of course we’ll be seeing them Wednesday (for cooking) and Thursday (for Thanksgiving), be we didn’t want to wait until then.

But after a short visit, we were back on the road again, this time our next stop was at another Buc-ee’s, this one located on SR 96 in League City, about 8 miles from the RV park. We always stop here on our way to fill up with diesel. It’s always better to park for an extended period with a full tank to cut down on condensation during cold, wet weather. I also add a dose of Biocide to kill any algae growth.

After unhooking the toad, we headed over to the park, only to get there and find there was a truck parked in our site. It took a while to find the owner, but finally we were parked. Our site, 77, is actually a 5th wheel site, but we just hook up the utilities underneath the coach with no problems.

About 6pm we headed up to Webster to meet Chris, Linda, and Piper at our favorite King Food. But on the way I discovered the truck had another problem. Jan had said it was making a funny noise as she followed me from Buc-ee’s to the park. And once I drove it I quickly realized I had a front wheel bearing problem.

Something else to fix.

We had a great time seeing the ‘kids’ again, to go along with the great food. Later, on the way home the noise from the bearing became much worse. So much that I’m probably going to have to do something about it very quickly.

Like tomorrow.

Porked Out . . .

After a rude awakening this morning, (the power glitched and the white noise generator shut off, making it very, very quiet), Jan and I headed out to the Livingston Wal-Mart to pick up some things for tonight’s get-together at Dennis and Carol Hill’s. Later, while Chris and Charles packed, I worked on some Internet stuff for Chris and some other clients

Around 3pm, Lynette and Gregg McHenry showed up, on their way to Dennis’ party too. Fellow Gate Guards, we were last together with them last week while we were at the Lake Conroe TT.

After talking for a while we all headed down the road to Dennis and Carol’s for some of Dennis’ great smoked pork. Last time it was ribs, this time it was pulled pork. And boy, was it good. Dennis really knows his way around a smoker. And we got to meet a lot of new people.

Dennis Hill Party 1

Dennis Hill Party 2

Dennis Hill Party 3

Along with Potato Salad, Cole Slaw, BBQ Beans, and warm buns, the pork really hit the spot. And there was certainly plenty of everything, including Cheesecake Pie and Pumpkin Pie for dessert. So hopefully Dennis will keep his ears attached and invite us back again sometime.

Later, after we got back to the rig, Jan and I helped Chris and Charles carry stuff out to their rig getting ready for their trip. Then Chris and I went over some last details on her website, as well as some computer questions she had. We were trying to wrap everything up since they’re leaving for Yuma tomorrow.

For our part, tomorrow I’m going to use Charles’ pressure washer to wash my rig and get all that drill mud off the roof.. Then Wednesday Jan and I will head back over to the Lake Conroe Thousand Trails for a two week stay.

Desperation Coffee . . .

A week or so ago, while we were still on the gate, our Mr. Coffee didn’t want to make coffee one morning, not something you particularly like in a coffee maker.

The problem was that it heated up OK, and then water started coming out of the spout onto the coffee grounds. But after a few minutes the water just stopped flowing. You could hear it still bubbling in the heating unit it boiled away and then beeped to signal it was finished making coffee. To finish it up manually , I heated up water in the microwave and poured it directly on the grounds. So at least we had coffee.

Later in the afternoon, I took the Mr. Coffee outside to flush it out with the hose, figuring it was stopped up somehow. And in washing it out, I did find some coffee grounds in the bottom of the reservoir. I’m not sure how they got there, but I was hoping that it would fix the problem.

And it did for a few days.

At least until yesterday morning when the problem reoccurred. And again I finished up our coffee by pouring in microwaved hot water. But with our leaving at 1pm and not getting home until after 9pm last night, I forgot about the problem until this morning.

Not wanting to put up with this again, and desperate for coffee, I decided to take the thing apart and either fix it or trash it. And ‘trash it’ is what Jan wanted to do with it. “Just buy a new one.” is what she said. But I’m cheap.

You do remember I’m cheap, right?

Anyway we just bought this one back in July, and I wasn’t ready to give up on it yet. So getting out my screwdriver set, I tore into it.

First off I removed the spout after taking out one screw.

Mr Coffee Repair 1

I disassembled the tube and the spout , but found no blockage there. So turning the unit upside down, I took out the six small screws, including the two hidden under the removable rubber feet., something you see a lot in equipment.

Mr Coffee Repair 1a

Note I’m once again using my trusty WORX Power Screw Driver.

Opening it up I found the heating unit and the associated plumbing.

Mr Coffee Repair 2

The first thing I noticed was some sort of blockage in the lower tube.

At first I thought it was a clump of grounds doing the blocking, but when I looked closer,

Mr Coffee Repair 3

I found it was something mechanical. So I removed the tube and tried to blow through it, finding nothing would go through in either direction. Probably not the way it’s supposed to work.

Using a screwdriver I pushed the object out and found this.

Mr Coffee Repair 4

Getting a closer look, I saw it was a check valve of some sort. Perusing the layout of the unit I figured out that the water pressure in the reservoir pushes the water down past the check valve where it is heated up and pushed up the tube leading to the spout. The check valve keeps the heated water from being pushed back into the reservoir, only letting it go up the spout.

But since I wasn’t able to blow through the tube from either direction, it was obviously stopped up, and cleaning it out, I did find a small bit of coffee grounds in it.

Hoping this was the problem, I put everything back together and crossed my fingers. And a few minutes later I had this.

Mr Coffee Repair 5

Ahhhh! Coffee.

About 3pm Jan and I headed out for a late lunch and some shopping. I wanted to stop back by the Convenience RV Store to pick up the bulbs and the latches I ordered yesterday. We had also decided to eat at the adjoining Fish Pond Restaurant while we were there. We’ve eaten here twice before and always enjoyed it, and it was no different this time.

Jan had the ‘small’ Catfish Platter.

Fish Pond Catfish

and I had the Grilled Chicken Club Sandwich.

Fish Pond Grilled Chicken Club

What I want to know is if that’s the ‘small’ platter, how big is the big one?

My Grilled Chicken sandwich was maybe one of the best chicken sandwiches I’ve ever had, possibly because it also had grilled onions on it, not a usual ingredient on a Club sandwich. We both also had a small salad with our meal, made even better with their delicious homemade dressings.

After our great meal, and picking up my parts, we headed back down I-45 to the Kroger’s in Willis to pick up a few things before finally heading home for the night.

Another nice, non-gate day.

Happy Thanksgiving . . .

First off, Jan and I want to wish all our family and friends a very Happy Thanksgiving.

We made the 160 mile trip into Katy in about 4 hours, which included 30 minutes for breakfast at the Cuero McDonalds and 30 minutes to pick up last-minute items at the Kroger’s right before we got to Brandi’s.

Then coming home we made the trip in only about 3 hours.

We had a great time, and I’ve got a lot of pictures, but I’m too tired to really do justice to a blog tonight, so I’ll see y’all tomorrow.

I’m going to bed.

We Have A Visitor . . .

Jan and I spent the day huddled in the rig staying as far away from the Black Friday madness as possible.

But Jan didn’t stay quite as ‘huddled’ as I did, since when I got up at 11am, she was gone. She finally showed back up a little after 12, having been down visiting Janice Evans, as I had figured.

For lunch we finished off our Pho 20 leftovers from our visit Wednesday night. Really heats up well.

Even though I didn’t leave the coach, I did my part, albeit small, to contribute to Black Friday sales by ordering a couple of things from Amazon.

First up was a DVD of all 20 episodes of Kolchak: The Night Stalker starring Darren McGavin. The series, which ran in 1974 and 1975, was the acknowledged inspiration for the long-running X-Files.

Kolchak DVD

The series was preceded by two made-for-TV movies, The Night Stalker in 1972, and The Night Strangler in 1973. The Night Stalker became the highest-rated TV movie at that time. And The Night Strangler wasn’t far behind.

One of my all-time favorite series, it’s always been in the $50 range in the past, but now it’s going for under $17. It’s been digitally remastered with all cut scenes restored. Really looking forward to it when it comes in on Monday.

While I was at it, I also ordered a new First Alert Smoke Alarm for the coach, an upgrade for our other one.

And on the subject of X-Files, it’s coming back for an 11th season this coming summer.

We have a visitor passing through, though actually it’s already heading out of town. Or rather out of the solar system, anyway.

interstellar_asteroid

Named Oumuamua by its discoverers, it’s the first verified ‘visitor’ to our solar system from interstellar space, coming from the direction of Vega, the brightest star in the constellation Lyra, and heading toward the constellation Pegasus. Oumuamua, (pronounced oh MOO-uh MOO-uh), is Hawaiian for “a messenger from afar arriving first.” Very apropos.

Besides the fact that it’s from the stars, its shape has never been seen before on any other object. At over 1/4 mile long and about 120 feet in diameter, it’s spinning along its long axis like a bullet.

Scientists are looking at a way to rendezvous with Oumuamua to take a closer look. Called Project Lyra, it would have to be launched in the next 5 to 10 years to have a chance to catch the asteroid, which is presently traveling at about 59,000 mph, faster than any man-made object has before, meaning that the rendezvous would take place far beyond Pluto.

Sounds a lot like Rendezvous with Rama’ by Arthur C. Clarke to me.

Taking the First Watch . . .

For lunch/breakfast today we decided to give First Watch another try. They’re another of these breakfast places that keep springing up.

We weren’t real crazy about the place when we first tried them back in May, but decided to check them out again since we may not have a choice much longer.

We both like The Egg and I better, but recently found out that First Watch actually owns Egg and I (and several other breakfast chains like Le Peep and Good Egg) and they’re in the process of converting most/all of the Eggs over to First Watch’s.

We got there about 1:30 and pretty quickly experienced one of the reasons that we weren’t real happy with the place last time – slow service. Plus they don’t have the delicious Hazelnut coffee that’s our favorite at the Egg.

But they did have Jan’s favorite Avocado Toast,

First Watch Avocado Toast

as well as the Dressed Greens with Lemon Vinaigrette she likes.

First Watch Dressed Greens

She wasn’t sure why, but Jan said she didn’t like the eggs that came with her Toast as much as the Egg version.

Rather than my usual Eggs, Bacon, Fruit, and English Muffin, I went in a different direction with the BLT Benedict,

First Watch BLT Benedict

along with an order of their Million Dollar Bacon.

First Watch Million Dollar Bacon 2

Which is four slices of their hardwood-smoked bacon with brown sugar, black pepper, cayenne, and a maple syrup drizzle. And although the BLT Benedict was pretty good, the bacon was the best part of the meal.

But isn’t that the way it always is. The only thing better than bacon is . . .  more bacon, right?

After today’s visit I’m not sure we like FW any better than after our first visit, and apparently it’s not only us. As I was checking out at the counter I asked the guy if he knew if they were planning to convert the Webster E&I over to a FW.

And he said, “Lord, I hope not. I like their food better than here. Unfortunately I started working here before I ate there.”

So it’s not just us, I guess.

Afterwards we went right across the street to pick up a few things at WalMart. We were a little leery of the post-Black Friday crowds, but it wasn’t really any busier than a normal Saturday.

One thing I’ve noticed in the last couple of weeks that, rather than going up in anticipation of Thanksgiving traveling, gas prices have been dropping even more. This past Monday when I got gas at the new Costco, it was a new low at $1.98/gallon.

But now it’s at $1.91. And it looks like the Sam’s Club right up the Interstate has started matching them.

A gas war is a good thing.

November 24, 2019

They Don’t Like Us As Much . . .

After a late breakfast here at our La Quinta Inn, we headed back east on I-10 to meet Brandi, Lowell, and Landon at the Los Cabo Mexican Restaurant in Columbus for lunch.

They were taking Jan home with them so she can Landon-sit/pet-sit next week until I pick her up next Sunday. I will be coming to go out for Thanksgiving Dinner with her on Thursday, either from Santa Fe, or maybe even from here, I guess.

We’ve eaten here quite a few times, usually when we’ve been staying at the Colorado River Thousand Trails Park just a few miles up SR71, and it’s always been good.

And the portions are huge.

Fajitas At Los Cabos

This is the Fajitas Mexicanas for ONE. There’s a pile of beef underneath there. And I took home enough for two more meals.

This is Landon multitasking.

Landon At Los Cabos

He’s listening to music, playing checkers (and Winning) against an online opponent, AND eating chips and queso, all at the same time.

Multi-Talented too!

After getting my hugs and kisses in with everyone, I was back in Luling by about 2:15, with my first stop at the rig. I didn’t expect anyone to be there (and they weren’t ) but I wanted to double-check that the refrigerator was still ticking along, and it was, so that’s one less worry, I guess.

Tomorrow, right after breakfast, I’ll head on over to Dix’s to try and get an idea on when the parts will be in and when I can possibly get on the road. If it’s any time after 11 or 12, or so, I plan on spending the night a the nearby River Bend RV Park and leave out mid-morning on Tuesday, so I can avoid the going home traffic through Houston.

Of course I still could be here on Thanksgiving too.

I guess that Dix’s doesn’t like RV’ers very much. I notice that their Shop Rate for Trucks is $95 an hour, but it’s $125 an hour for RV’s.

I’m wondering if I can self-identify as a Truck, rather than an RV so I can save the $30 an hour. I don’t see why not, since guys can now self-identify as girls so they can use the girl’s restrooms and play on the girl’s sports teams.

Thanksgiving In A Box . . .

With a full day of errands in front of us, and lunch of course, we left the rig about 12:30 with our first stop at the Snooze up in Webster for brunch.

Then it was on back down to the League City Cracker Barrel to pick up our Thanksgiving Dinner. Which despite all the trouble initially ordering it, the pickup went very smoothly. We just had to pull around back, pay using a credit card, and a few minutes later they brought out a big box and put it in the back seat.

But then things slowed down when I went inside to order some slices of pie. We didn’t want whole pies, just a couple of slices each of Pumpkin and Chocolate Pecan. But we were told that to get slices we’d have to do that inside. But that’s when things slowed to a crawl.

First off, they were out of Pumpkin Pie and wouldn’t have any more for several hours yet. So I just ordered two slices of Chocolate Pecan. And 45 minutes later I finally had my pie.

Finally!

I noticed that they were still telling people that they could order Thanksgiving Dinner online, or using their app

Good Luck With That1

Finally leaving CB we headed back up to Webster to pick up some Amazon orders at my clients, but along the way I stopped off at the UPS Store to drop off an Amazon return. Quick and Easy.

Then after our client stop, we drove over to the nearby HEB so Jan could get her Pumpkin Pie, in this case a whole Cream Cheese Pumpkin Pie.

HEB Cream Cheese Pumpkin Pie

So we still ended up with a whole pie. YUM!

Getting home, we unpacked our Thanksgiving Dinner and stored it away in the fridge.

CB Thanksgiving In A Box

What we got is a Turkey Breast, Cornbread Dressing, Turkey Gravy, Cranberry Sauce, Yeast Rolls, Green Bean Casserole, and Candied Carrots.

And of course, PIE!

Leftovers . . .

When I gave you the update on Monday night’s blog about my doctor follow-up visit, I forgot to include a few things.

My next appointment is for a month, so right before Christmas.

And I was also able to clarify a few things.

They did do a three-level fusion, C 4-5, C5-6, and C6-7. Alexandria, the P.A. kind of laughed when I asked if the bone used in my grafts came from one cadaver or three cadavers. She said she didn’t know, but it was also some of my bone that had been sliced out to make room where the vertebrae were too close together. So I got a little bit of everybody in there.

I had been told that in a fusion, that there would be some limitations on how I could move my neck. For some reason, I assumed that was on the side to side movements, but that’s on a different part of the vertebrae.

So the only restriction I will have is how high or how low I can look down. So that should be OK.

As I mentioned Jan and I will be doing the Cracker Barrel thing for Thanksgiving tomorrow. I was surprised to find out that they will start serving Thanksgiving dinner at 7am, when they open.

We always also order two meals to go so we have leftovers. After all, it’s not really Thanksgiving without leftovers, is it?

November 24, 2022

Turkey & ????

No Dressing.

Happy Thanksgiving 2022

As forecasted, it was pouring down rain when I got up about 8 this morning, but had finally slacked off by the time I left a little after 10 am.

My first stop was for gas at our nearby Circle K for $2.75/gal, about 5 cents less than last time. Then I was on up I-45 to pick up Rob and Anne, our Great White North friends, from where they’re staying at the Jetstream RV Park near Ellington Field.

But just as soon as I got on the Interstate, the drizzling turned into a downpour, and the traffic was 3 lanes bumper to bumper due to two accidents within about 3 miles. And it was still pouring down when I picked up Ron and Anne.

But by the time we exited to the Sam Houston Tollway, it had again slacked off and we had a smooth trip up to Katy.

At least until Jan called, using words I can’t repeat here, telling me that Cracker Barrel had given us double Sweet Potato Casseroles, and NO CORNBREAD DRESSING!

Boy, was she mad! Glad we were still 15 miles away.

Actually I’m surprised I needed the phone to hear her.

Luckily for us she had cooled down, and it helped a lot more when I put a Truly Strawberry Hard Lemonade in her hand.

It also helped when Anne pitched right in helping her get everything in and out of the oven on time.

And here was our Thanksgiving spread.

Thanksgiving Dinner 2022

Note: NO DRESSING!

And as Jan says, the dressings her favorite part.

But everything else was delicious.

Here’s my plateful.

And Jan really appreciated Anne’s help cleaning up afterward.

Later, after we recuperated for several hours, and Anne became Jack’s cuddle toy,

Thanksgiving Anne and Jack 2022

we had pie, both Pumpkin and Pecan, while we sat around the kitchen table.

Finally, about 5pm, Jan loaded them up with leftovers and we headed back down to the Clear Lake area, where I dropped them off at their rig.

Brandi, Lowell, and Landon will be back from their Colorado trip very late Friday night, and I then I’ll pick Jan up early Saturday afternoon.

Rob and Anne leave for Yuma Saturday where they’ll spend some time with family. Really wish they could stay longer.

Ron & Anne 3 Turkeys

A really fun couple.

They Ran Out Of Turkey . . .

At 11:10 am!

We were on our way up to the League City Cracker Barrel, getting there a few minutes before 11. I dropped Jan off at the entrance so she could get us checked in while I found a place to park. Which turned out to be pretty easy because I got a place emptied by someone leaving just as I came by.

When I got inside Jan was still in line to get checked in, which took about 5 minutes. We were told it would be about 40 minutes, but just as we got outside to sit down, we got called back in.

Nice!

So far.

We got seated and someone took our drink order pretty quickly, but about 5 minutes later when our waitress Kristen came to take our order, and we ordered two Thanksgiving dinners, she, very sheepishly, told us that they were OUT OF TURKEY!

It was 11:10 am.

And they were OUT OF TURKEY!

We had been told that they wouldn’t even start serving Thanksgiving dinner until 11, though Kristen said that had actually started serving at 10 am.

BUT Kristen said they did have Fried Turkey.

Now I could tell Jan was starting to go into volcano mode, especially since last year’s CB Dressing fiasco, which you can read about in tomorrow’s Retro-Blog™ for this date in 2022.

I had seen the ads for their Fried Turkey, so I said that would be fine. Jan, though, just continued to simmer.

But when our meals finally arrived, it looked like this.

and, as Jan finally admitted, it was very, very good.

It was a big chunk of Chicken Fried Turkey, probably more turkey than we would have gotten with the sliced turkey.

And it was really good.

So we didn’t have a problem with the two take-home dinners we had ordered to pick up also being the Fried Turkey.

But it doing tonight’s Retro-Blogs™, I came across this photo from our 2017 CB meal.

Back then we also got a slice of Ham as well as the Turkey, and I think they were using a bigger scoop for the Dressing.

Our Pumpkin Pie dessert looked like this, and was very tasty. But when I showed it to Jan and asked her, “What’s wrong with this?”

She said, “Not enough whipped cream?”

It should look like this. Yes, there’s pie underneath there.

Coming home we stopped off at the Victory Lakes NTB store to pick up the truck

And later this evening, I found out it wasn’t just us, but it was our Cracker Barrel. And it was even in the news.

‘We don’t have a backup plan’: Customers upset after Cracker Barrel cancels Thanksgiving dinner orders at last minute

Some Houston area customers received an unwelcome message early Thanksgiving morning; the dinners they pre-ordered from a Cracker Barrel in League City had been canceled.

“We didn’t really have a backup plan, we did it because we didn’t want to go through the stress of cooking our dinner because I have to work,” said Darlene Reid.

Reid said they ordered a Thanksgiving meal from the Cracker Barrel in League City and received notice late Wednesday the order was canceled.

“(My husband) received the email last night around 11:30, but he was in bed so when he woke up he saw his phone and checked the email and that’s when he found out about 6:30 this morning,” said Reid.

KPRC 2 received the following response from Cracker Barrel media relations.

“We extend our deepest apologies as we regretfully had to cancel approximately two dozen orders last night for some of our League City guests. We understand the disappointment this has caused and take full responsibility. This is an isolated incident, and we are committed to making things right with these guests.”

One thing that was interesting is that almost everyone around us in the CB dining room was getting breakfast, not turkey, which made it even stranger that they were running out of turkey. The only thing that makes sense is that their shipment didn’t show up in time.

And wrapping up Thanksgiving, here’s a long-lost photo of a Hooterville Thanksgiving in 1968, uniting the casts of Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres, and Petticoat Junction.

A Hooterville Thanksgiving

All 3 shows took place in the same TV universe, were produced by Paul Henning, and shown on CBS, so it was easy to do a combination episode.

Brings back memories.

And Now On To Today’s Retro-Blogs.™

Gumbo…Gumbo…Gumbo…

Today was the first day of our two day trip back to Houston. We left the Gulf State Park at Gulf Shores about 8:00 am, but we didn’t get far. Only to the Cracker Barrel in Foley where we decided to stop for breakfast.

Finally, about 9 we hit the road…again. Being pretty much all Interstate, we had a smooth trip, all 300 miles of it.  About 2:45pm we pulled into the parking lot of Mulate’s here in Breaux Bridge, LA,  (pronounced ‘mu lots’) pretty much our favorite Cajun place.  There’s a place in Houston that runs a close second, but this one is the best.

I have been eating the gumbo here for almost 15 years.  From 1994 until 2006 I made the round trip from Houston to Birmingham every month to visit my mother.  And I always stopped at Mulate’s both going and coming.  It got so that I would just walk in and sit down and they would bring me my order…large seafood gumbo, extra rice, and Ice tea, and then bread pudding and coffee for dessert.

Actually, I’m starting to salivate just typing this. And I just ate there 5 hours ago.  It’s that good!  It was nice to walk in, have Tracey run over and give us a big hug, and then bring us our order.  Just like old times.

Right now we’re parked right down the street in the Walmart parking lot for the night.  Tomorrow we’ll make the 250 mile run to the Galveston Bay RV Park on Dickinson Bayou, where we’ll be parked for the next couple of months or so.

Bingo Bound . . .

Today was the 3rd, and hopefully last, day of Jan’s migraine series so we didn’t do much of anything, but sit around the rig and enjoy the view, and coffee, of course.

About 4:30 we headed up SH 146 to Stomp’s Burger Joint to meet our friend Maria Sutton for supper. Then she and Jan were going down to La Marque to play Bingo again at the Knights of Columbus Hall

Leaving them I drove over to Kroger’s to pick up a last few things for Thanksgiving dinner preparation, and then came back to the rig.

Then, about 9:30 I drove down to La Marque to up Jan. Once again she was within just a couple of numbers

Waking up to a cool morning, hot coffee was a big hit, with a later lunch of leftover Sonny’s BBQ from last week with a little of the delicious Creamed Corn from Rudy’s BBQ last night.

Jan doesn’t like corn, but she loves Rudy’s Creamed Corn.

About 1 I headed out on some errands, and another client visit.

My first stop was EPO, a great local electronics parts place that I’ve been going to since we moved here in 1978. I needed some heavy-duty ‘F’ connectors and they had exactly what I needed.

Then it was Sam’s Club for some Joint Juice. They were really, really busy with the whole parking lot full. I can imagine what it’s going to look like on Friday. I certainly won’t be there.

Then it was back to my client’s for a couple of hours. On the way home our daughter Brandi called to say that they’ve made it to Oklahoma OK. They left about 7pm last night for the 7 hour drive, and Landon slept the entire way.

Getting home about 5 pm, we turned right around and headed back up SR146 to La Brisa, another great local Mexican place, and even better, it’s close by. And they have really good Chicken Tortilla Soup.

of winning the big prize. Bummer!

November 23, 2011

Turkey Day Eve . . .

And actually, we’re having Thanksgiving dinner at the La Brisa over on I-45 in League City tomorrow. But rather than Mexican, It’s a traditional Thanksgiving buffet with all the trimmings. It’s our first time for their Thanksgiving buffet, but they do a great job on their Saturday and Sunday morning breakfast buffet, so it should be good.

Turkey Day + 1 . . .

This morning started out on the deck with Starbuck’s coffee, compliments of Lowell’s early morning run, though really it was Lowell, Brandi, and Landon who went. Jan and I were still asleep.

Actually even Landon slept in, since he didn’t wake up until about 6:45am.

We’d all decided that today was going to be a do-nothing day, and it pretty much was. A lot of reading, resting, napping, and enjoying the view on the deck went on.

About noon Jan and Brandi put out the leftovers and we made another pass on all that delicious food, but it seems like we still haven’t made a big dent in it yet.

And after turkey, it was nap time again.

About 3pm we all headed over to the local Wal-Mart to pick up some things. We were wondering how the Black Friday crowds would be, but although it may have been busy by small-town Marble Falls standards, for us it was just a not-so-busy Saturday in Houston, so we were in and out relatively quickly, at least for us. But we were still there over an hour.

By this time we were all starting to get hungry, and by hungry, I mean we wanted some Mexican food. And the best place for that is The Maxican. And yes, that’s the way it’s spelled. We’ve been eating here for a number of years, pretty much every time we’ve come up here, though usually it’s closer to Christmas.

Jan had the Nachos, and I had the Marsha Special, which is a Poblano Pepper stuffed with Chicken and Cheese, and then covered with a Chipotle Cream Sauce. Really good.

Coming home we stopped off at Walgreen’s so I could get some cash from their ATM. They had a Chase Bank ATM so I wouldn’t have to pay a fee. And since we’re going to eat at Salt Lick BBQ tomorrow afternoon, and they don’t take credit cards, I’m going to need some of the folding stuff.

Tomorrow will be our last full day here, and we’ve enjoyed it so much, it’s going to be hard to leave Sunday morning. We all agree that we want to come back here again.

Changing of the Guards . . .

Well, it’s done. We’re off the gate for this year.

I spent last night getting everything but our canopy was taken down and packed away, even if somewhat soggy. Tearing down the canopy can be a one-man operation, but I didn’t want to chance it in the 20 mph winds we were having all night. Before I can take it apart, it has to be completely unstaked and all the tie downs removed. And of course right about then a big wind gust would make it look like Dorothy’s house in the tornado. So I saved that for when Jan got up about 7am.

About 8:45 I called our support guy Todd, and got Joseph instead. Todd was off this weekend and Joseph was filling in. I called to be sure he would have an extension cord on his truck. While I was reconfiguring the cords getting the rig unplugged from the generator, I found the plug on one cord had overheated and just came apart when I pulled on it. This one powered the front set of light stands and also the bell. So the new guards were going to need it.

At about 7:30 Jan and I started in on the canopy, and since the wind had died down it went pretty easy. The only problem was that the canopy was wet from the rain when we took it off, so rather than pack it away in the case, we just stuffed it in a large garbage bag, and we’ll dry it out after we get back to Houston and the weather improves.

My last chore was to stow the water and sewer hoses, leaving only our electrical cord to unplug from the generator before we pulled out. Well, that and the slide.

Then it was just a matter of waiting for our relief. I forgot to ask Joseph whether it would be just him relieving us until the new guards showed up, or if he was bringing them with him.

As it turned out, Jim and Donna Mossman showed up with Joseph about 9:30. While Jan went over the logs with Donna, I caught Jim up on some things about the site. Interestingly, Jim and Donna are long-time blog readers, so It was good to finally meet them. I think we left our gate (ex-gate?) in good hands.

When I saw them pulling in, I went ahead and cranked up the rig, so by the time we were ready to leave, the rig was up on the airbags and ready to roll. After saying our goodbyes, and unplugging the electric, and bringing in the slide, we pulled out.

Well, I pulled out. Jan on the other hand, took off like a bat out of hell, never looking back and leaving me in her dust. I finally caught up with her at the Gate Guard Services yard and we parked and got set up. As it turns out we’re parked in exactly the same spot as when we first got here in April last year for our first gate guarding adventure.

Gate Guard Lot 1

We’ve just got 50amp, but that’s no problem for one night. As soon as I was done with the setup, I headed off to bed since It was now 10:30, and I was already 3 hours into my normal sleep time. So a nap was in order to start getting me back on a somewhat normal sleep schedule.

About 3:30 Jan and I headed over to Pleasanton for dinner and some grocery shopping. On the way we drove by the gate to check things out, and it looked like Jim and Donna were all set up and had made themselves at home. Good to see.

Dinner was at Chili’s, and the shopping was Wal-Mart and HEB, and we were home by a little after 6pm.

Tomorrow, we’ll head for Houston about 9:30 with a stop at the Buc-ee’s in Luling for coffee and a kolache for breakfast. Tomorrow night we’re meeting Chris, Linda, and Piper at our favorite Chinese restaurant, King Food.

Family and good food. Can’t be beat.

November 23, 2014

Websites and Enchiladas . . .

Based on the original weather forecasts, we really dodged a bullet last night as the bad weather moved through. But as far as Livingston was concerned, it was much ado about not much..

Looking at the radar during the night, the storm pretty much split into two parts and went north and south of Livingston, giving us only a steady, but light rain, and none of the extremely high winds that hit other areas.

Chris and Charles left about 9:30 this morning for a wedding down in Houston, so after coffee, I went next door to clean the gunk out of their computers. Using CCleaner, Glary Utilities, SuperAntiSpyWare, and AntiMalwareBytes, I spent several hours going through them, optimizing them, and removing useless items from the startup.

After finishing that I installed and linked DropBox on both machines, and then installed the Dropbox apps on Chris and Charles’ phones. Tomorrow I’ll do the same for Evernote, and then we’ll have an in-service on how to use them.

Our dinner this evening was in-house, with Chris serving Salad, and a delicious batch of her Homemade Hatch Green Chili Chicken Enchiladas, along with Pinto Beans, and Ice Cream for dessert.. A really great meal.

Tomorrow we’ll work some more on the C and C RV Insurance website, and talk over more ideas for changes and upgrades. Then we’ll help them load their RV for their upcoming trip on Tuesday.

About 4pm we’ll head down to Dennis and Carol Hill’s place on the next block for some of his delicious smoked pork.

We’re all really looking forward to it.

November 23, 2015

First Day of Freedom . . .

Our first day of gate freedom and I slept in until about 11am, my first full nights sleep in 3 months. When I’m on the gate I normally sleep 3 or 4 hours at a time, twice a night. I can do this for long periods with no problems, but it’s certainly nice to not have to.

Along with our morning coffee and pumpkin bread, we enjoyed just sitting and talking, and not jumping up at the sound of the bell alarm. Jan did say that she still hears bells in her sleep. For my part, I find myself checking out tag numbers to see if I recognize them as we walk around the WalMart parking lot.

About 1pm Jan and I headed out for some shopping and then a trip down to Katy to have dinner with Brandi, Lowell, and Landon. They leaving tomorrow for Oklahoma to visit some friends and then spend Thanksgiving with Lowell’s parents before coming back home Sunday night. So this would be our only chance to see them for a week.

Our first shopping stop was the Convenience RV Store a couple of miles north of here next to the Fish Pond Restaurant. I was looking for a couple of things, 12v light bulbs, and a shower door latch.

Bulb and Latch

in our bathroom, besides the overhead lights, we have six light bulbs, three on either side of the vanity mirror. A week or so ago, four of them suddenly died, all three on the left side, and one on the right.

Now three bulbs going out in one fixture is kind of suspicious and makes you think that maybe there’s a problem with the fixture itself. But I took a good bulb from the right side and it worked in the left fixture, and one of the dead bulbs still didn’t work in the right side. At first you’d want to chalk this up to just a coincidence, and it kind of is, but not quite.

In the 8 years we’ve owned this coach, I’ve replaced two of these six bulbs, both on the right side. And I’d be willing to bet that those two bulbs are the ones still working. The other four are original to the coach when we bought it in 2007, and may just be original to the coach from 1999.

And actually it’s not that unusual for bulbs with the same amount of hours to go out in a group. Back in my younger, skinnier (stupider?) days when I was working in radio and TV broadcasting, I used to moonlight replacing the bulbs in the 500’ transmitting towers for a number of stations in the area. I have no fear of heights, and I worked cheap, so I usually got the job. And one thing you did when you went up to replace a bad bulb, you replaced them all at the same time. Otherwise, if one went out, more would follow, sometimes within a few days.

These bulbs were kind of expensive, and sometimes the station would try to cheap out by only replacing the bad one. I’d warn them that I’d be back in a short time, but they wouldn’t listen. And anywhere from a few days to a few weeks, I’d be back.

I was also looking for a new shower door latch, but as it turned out they did not have either the bulbs or the latch in stock, but they did order them for me, and they should be in by noon tomorrow.

Nice service.

Our next shopping stop was Wal-Mart, of course. It’s not really shopping without a Wal-Mart stop. Besides the groceries and stuff, we both got haircuts while we were there. I hadn’t had one since the 1st of October so I was starting to look a bit shaggy, at least on the sides. Not a lot to worry about on top.

Finally about 4:15 we were on our way down to the Katy area to meet Brandi, Lowell, and Landon at one of our favorite restaurants in that area, Torchy’s Tacos.

Torchy's Tacos Greg2

Where else can you get a taco with a grilled jalapeno sausage, queso fresco, shredded cheese, and Pico de Gallo? Not your average taco.

Later, after some time at Brandi’s, we finally headed back to Conroe, getting back to the rig about 9:15.

Another nice, but long day.

November 23, 2016

DashCams and Space Pens . . .

I spent the afternoon finishing up a couple of things on our truck for our trip tomorrow.

After I filled up the windshield washer fluid tank with the Rain-X washer fluid I got at Wal-Mart yesterday. I’ve used this stuff for years and it really works. During light to medium rainstorms, you don’t even have to turn the wipers on. The water just beads up and rolls up the windshield.

Then I installed my latest new toy.

A week or so ago I found this article on Road and Track’s site about the Top 5 Best Dashcams. And their favorite was the cheapest one at around $50. Then in one of those serendipitous things, a few days later I got an online ad from Amazon listing the $50 cam for $30 so I ordered one. Amazon DashCam

DashCam 2

It was quickly installed and configured. I like the bigger screen and larger, easier-to-use buttons. We’ll give a good try-out on our trip tomorrow and I’ll let you know.

Well, it was a lot of work but we now have all our Christmas lights up in the rig.

Rig Christmas Lights

I think the one most impressed with them was Karma. After I put them up, she got on the kitchen counter and just stared up at them for about 20 minutes.

Over the years we slacked off our decorating. This was what we did in 2009, our first Christmas in our rig.

Rig Christmas Lights 2009

Talking about Karma, this afternoon she jumped up on the back of the sofa and was chasing something in the front end of the window, pawing at it. Then I heard a ‘yelp’ and Karma started licking her left paw. Looking down in the window track I found a honey bee. Don’t know how it got in, but I got rid of it.

Karma only licked at her paw for a few minutes and then it didn’t seem to bother her anymore. I looked at it a while later and it wasn’t swollen and didn’t seem to be tender, so I guess she’s OK.

This afternoon I came across this graphic on Facebook and couldn’t resist making a comment correcting all the misinformation in it.

Space Pen

And here was my comment.

Having spent 10 years at JSC on the Shuttle program, I can tell you why NASA didn’t use pencils. Pencil ‘lead’ is graphite. And graphite is electrically conductive.

When you use a pencil in space the tiny graphite particles shed by the pencil float off around the cockpit, coming to rest everywhere, inside instruments, electronics, etc., causing random shorts and problems. With the wrong short at the wrong time, you could lose a spacecraft.

While the part about the Russians using a pencil is true, the rest is just completely wrong.

Paul Fisher of the Fisher Pen Co. spent $1 million of his OWN money to develop the Fisher Space Pen for sale to the public. In 1968 Fisher sold 400 pens to NASA for $2.39 a pen, a 40% discount from the retail $3.98 because they bought in bulk.

In 1969 the Russians saw the light and ordered 100 pens and 1000 refills for their space program.

Then in 1969 the Apollo 11 crew used parts of a Space Pen to fix a broken rocket engine arming switch, letting them make the return trip back to Earth

A pretty good deal for $956 of Fisher Space Pens. And a lot better than the fictitious $12 Billion.

Oh, yeah. The pen won’t work at 300°Celsius. That’s 572°F. The pen would melted long before that. As well as the person using it.

And it won’t write on glass, either.

They Lied . . .

About 2pm Jan and I headed up I-45 to League City to have Thanksgiving Dinner at the Cracker Barrel. Jan was hopeful that by getting there after 2 we wouldn’t have too long a wait. But when I caught up with her after dropping her off while I parked, she sheepishly said, “An hour and a half”. But at least there were plenty of rocker openings.

Cracker Barrel Crowd

And lucky for us (and Jan) they lied. It was only 40 minutes until we were called in.

Don’t know why they even give anyone menus

Cracker Barrel Menu

Everyone’s pretty much there for the same thing.

And even better is surprising how quickly it came out. We were served only 10 minutes after we sat down.

Cracker Barrel Thanksgiving Meal

So it’s Turkey & Dressing with Gravy, Ham, Sweet Potato Casserole, Mashed Potatoes, Cranberry Relish, Pumpkin Pie, with Biscuits and Cornbread Muffins. And a drink.

All for $12,.99. A really good deal.

As we were finishing up, our waiter brought our Pumpkin Pie.

Cracker Barrel Pumpkin Pie

However I thought they were a little chintzy on the Whipped Cream. It should have looked more like this.

Pumpkin Pie Done Right

There is actually pie under there.

As we were eating I told Jan that it would have been hard to beat this with most homemade Thanksgiving meals. She agreed and said even better she didn’t have to worry about this.

Thanksgiving Dishes

Previously the one thing that Jan didn’t like about eating out for Thanksgiving is the fact that there are no leftovers for the next day, for turkey sandwiches, etc.

So we solved this dilemma by ordering two more Thanksgiving meals to go. Now we’re all set for tomorrow.

When we left about an hour later they seemed to be just as busy as when we got there so I don’t think waiting until later would have really done any good. But the 40 minute wait we did have wasn’t too bad.

Our next stops were at my client’s to pick up the Pumpkin Bread that the Office Manager had given me on Wednesday which I forgot to bring home. Then it was the CVS right down the street before heading home.

A very nice, tasty day.

Amazon’s started their Black Friday Sales early and I really liked this

Furbo Dog Treat Camera

Furbo Dog Treat Tossing Camera

Pretty neat, and you can check it out. Pretty for those of you who have dogs at home.

Though I guess it would work with cats, too.

They also have a great deal on their Echo Dot, Alexa’s little brother.

Echo Dot

Echo Dot

Normally they’re $49.99, but now they’re only $29.99,

We’ve already got one, but that price is so good, I almost bought another one.

I’m not working tomorrow so I’ve got a nice long weekend off. Yah!

November 23, 2018

Black Friday . . .

I felt a lot better this morning, almost back to normal. Of course maybe it’s because Jan is back home. I certainly think so. And so does Miss Karma.

About 2pm Jan fixed us both a plate of the leftovers from the Thanksgiving feast at Brandi’s yesterday.

Then about 5 I fixed coffee and we had it with the pumpkin pie also left over.

Other than that, we stayed hunkered down, trying to keep out of the stampeding hordes on Black Friday. Or maybe Black and Blue Friday if you’re trying to fight your way through the crowds to grab that last Instant Pot or Grinch doll.

However we did order several things online that will just show up next. No fuss, no muss, no crowds. Nice.

The stuff we ordered last week from Costco came in right on time, matching Amazon. And besides gas, Costco is cheaper on a lot of stuff. The Rotisserie Chicken we got there the week before last for $4.99 runs $7.98 at HEB. However, I did get a Rotisserie Turkey Breast from HEB this last Monday to flesh out our leftovers.

Yesterday I got up to Brandi’s about 11, bringing the Cracker Barrel Cornbread Dressing that I had picked up the night before.

Of course, we had the Turkey that Brandi fixed,

Thanksgiving 2018 Turkey

a HoneyBaked Ham that Chantelle brought,

Thanksgiving 2018 Ham

Jan’s Green Bean Casserole,

Thanksgiving 2018 Green Bean Casserole

and much more.

Then it was time for everyone to line up for the feast.

Thanksgiving 2018 Group

Even Miss Piper.

Thanksgiving 2018 Piper

How she eats like this and still stays this svelte is a real mystery.

This is my 1st plate.

Thanksgiving 2018 Plate

Emphasis on ‘1st’.

Tomorrow we’ll probably sneak out for a bit, for some groceries and probably breakfast somewhere. Hopefully we can still avoid the leftover hordes.

Next week, on Tuesday, I’ll be taking Jan back to Brandi’s so she can dog-sit while Brandi, Lowell, and Landon, along with Chantelle, who’s also our travel agent, her husband Eric, and son Maddox, head down to Disney World for a week.

It’ll be Landon’s first trip to see the Mouse.

Then I’ll go back up on Monday afternoon to pick her up.

One thing about all these to/from trips to Katy is that they’re giving the recent transmission rebuild in the Dakota a real workout. With almost 300 miles on the meter, it’s still purring right along with nary a bobble. So far, so good.

November 23, 2019

Bored, Bored, Bored, and more Bored . . .

Apparently we can only relax and zone-out for so long, before we start to go a little stir-crazy. Or maybe a lot stir-crazy.

Jan will certainly be glad to spend the next week at Brandi’s so tomorrow we’re going to meet Brandi, Lowell, and Landon at the Los Cabos Mexican Restaurant in Columbus about 1pm for lunch. Then I’ll hand Jan off to them so she can Landon-sit and Pet-sit until next Sunday when I’ll finally get her back.

So I’ll be taking the rig back to Santa Fe by myself on . . . well sometime, anyway. I figure if I’m lucky, the gaskets will come in on Monday and get installed then. Which would mean I’ll be heading home on Tuesday.

Like I said, if I’m lucky. Otherwise my hotel bill could end up being higher than the repair job.

Once again we stopped off at the rig on our way out to dinner about 4pm, and were not surprised to find no one around, even though the dispatcher had said a couple of mechanics would be working today. Of course they probably left early.

I was happy to see that the fridge was still working fine, however the coach batteries were getting kind of low, down around 12.0 volts. I don’t know how low the voltage can go and the fridge keep working. I guess I may find out.

I would have cranked up the engine to get a little charge on the batteries, but I don’t know what might be disconnected, you know, like the oil cooler/filter. So I just hope everything will keep working before I either run out of propane or volts. Or both.

The La Quinta here is nice, with a decent free breakfast every morning. But I’m not exactly sure how it stays in business. It’s 3 stories with about 70 rooms, but I’ve never seen more than about 20 vehicles in the parking lot, and sometimes as few as 4.

Including us.

Now maybe they have a busier season, but I don’t know when that would be.

November 23, 2020

Like A Baby . . .

Or Babies, I guess.

Jan said she loves our new mattress topper and I’m really glad to hear that.

She’s got a ‘Princess And The Pea’ kind of back, and she’s really sensitive to what she sleeps on. And I’m happy too, since so far it seems a lot cooler than our old one. Probably because of the open coils of gel-infused foam.

Well, it looks like Cracker Barrel has run out of Thanksgiving. Or at least Turkey Dinners.

I mentioned yesterday all the rigmarole I had to go through to order a Turkey Dinner Bundle to be picked up tomorrow afternoon. But we really lucked out in comparison to my client’s office manager.

She also tried to order using the app last Friday and it didn’t work for her either. But when she called the local store, they told her to call back on Monday. But when she called back this morning they told her they had no more openings, and thus, no more Turkey Dinners. And they said that all the CB’s in the Houston area were booked up.

So how the heck does Cracker Barrel run out of Turkey Dinners. I mean they have serve Turkey and Dressing every Thursday anyway. It’s not like they could over-order or anything.

Yesterday Jan and I had breakfast for dinner at  Denny’s once again, both of us having our favorite omelets, mine their Ultimate Omelet, with a little bit of everything, ham, sausage, bacon, mushrooms, onions, and cheese, along with fruit instead of the hashbrowns, and an English muffin.

Denny's Ultimate Omelet 3

Really good, too.

Now I Know Why The 3 Bears Were So Upset . . .

Our day started this morning with two Amazon deliveries, one of which was my Respawn Gaming Chair.

Respawn Chair

Of course I can’t start using it until I get somebody over here to get the old one out of the rig.

Before my recent unpleasantness, I could have done it myself in an hour or so, but not now, especially with the 20# weight limit on what I can lift. So I’m going to try and get someone over here this weekend.

I also ordered a chair mat to go on the floor underneath it. It should be here Friday.

The second delivery was a couple of small shelving units for Jan. So it should be a busy weekend putting all this together.

Before we left the rig this afternoon, we fired up our old faithful workhorse Dodge Dakota for the first time in several months. We were going to drop off the Jeep at my mechanic’s so he can take care of a couple of things before our upcoming Branson trip starting the 4th of December.

Then it was up to Webster to have lunch at Snooze, our first visit in a while. They’ve got a new Holiday menu, and one of those items caught my eye so I decided to give it a try. And now I know why the 3 bears were upset with Goldilocks for messing with their porridge.

The new item, called Goldilock’s Porridge, was delicious.

Goldielock's Porriage

Made with a mix of steel-cut oats, quinoa and millet simmered in almond milk, and then topped with strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, bananas, toasted almonds and hemp seeds, it’s probably the best oatmeal-ish dish I’ve ever had.

And I paired it with an order of their special bacon, rubbed with brown sugar, cayenne, chili flakes and drizzled with black peppered maple syrup.

Jan went with her usual Bravocado Toast. So mundane.

Finishing up our afternoon, we made a  Kroger’s stop for a prescription and a WalMart visit for some needed stuff before getting back to the rig a little after 4pm.

Today was my first day driving again since my operation, and it felt good to be back behind the wheel.

Emotional Support Bears and Sketchy Owls . . .

Well, 1 out of 3 ain’t bad.

I got another Amazon delivery today, and it actually ended on my doorstep. I’ve got more stuff coming on Friday, so I hope it holds.

Apparently some women want to cuddle with someone (or something?) that they say, “He doesn’t snore, he doesn’t grumble or get angry.”

Emotional Support Bear

So they get an Emotional Support Bear.

And as the article says, he comes ‘bear’ naked, so you get to dress himself.

Grown-up version of Ken and Barbie, I guess.

Arizona police are warning people about doing drugs or buying Sketchy Owls from strangers at gas stations.

Sketchy Owl

Or maybe it was not to buy owls from strangers at sketchy gas stations.

One or the other. Either way, you end up with an owl, it seems.

Tomorrow morning I’m picking up our Canadian friends Ron & Anne and driving them up to our daughter Brandi’s house in Katy for Thanksgiving Dinner with Jan and me.

Brandi, et al., are still out in Colorado visiting with friends and will be back late Friday night. Then I’ll go up and pick up Jan sometime Saturday afternoon.

And speaking of Thanksgiving, here’s a long-lost photo of a Hooterville Thanksgiving in 1968, uniting the casts of Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres, and Petticoat Junction.

A Hooterville Thanksgiving

All 3 shows took place in the same TV universe, were produced by Paul Henning, and shown on CBS, so it was easy to do a combination episode.

Brings back memories.
