Make Pluto A Planet Again!

On my way home from work today, I stopped off at our local QuikTrip to pick up hot dogs for our supper tonight, All Beef Dogs for Jan, and Cheese Jalapeno Sausage for me.

Delicious as always.

20 Years and a few days ago, Pluto became a non-planet. Instead, it’s now considered just a big rock.

The reason it lost planet status is that the International Astronomical Union changed the rules.

The IAU now defines a true planet by the following:

1. A true planet orbits the Sun

2. A true planet should be round due to its gravity.

3. A true planet clears its own orbit of other objects in its path.

And it’s #3 where Pluto fails the test.

It’s not just big enough, being only about 2/3 the size of our Moon, to do much pulling or pushing things out of the way. But it does have its own Moons, five of them, in fact, with the largest named Charon.

I’m sorry, but if you have moons, you should be called a planet.

And here’s an actual photo of Pluto’s surface, taken by the New Horizons probe back in 2015.

These mountains are over 20,000 feet high, high enough to qualify as a planet in my mind.

The New Horizons probe took over 9 years to get to Pluto, even though it was traveling at over 36,000 mph, making it the fastest spacecraft ever launched from Earth

In a related matter, if Pluto is a dog, what is Goofy?

The Nancy Grace Roman Telescope is on its 30-day journey out to the L2 point where it will be orbiting the Sun rather than the Earth.

Then it will take about 90 days of setup, testing, and calibration before it officially goes online.

Can’t wait to see the first photos.

As usual for Tuesdays lately, tomorrow’s going to be a stay-at-home day, probably helped by the incoming Tropical Storm Edouard, which is supposed to bring us somewhere between 3” to 5” of rain over the next several days. So outside chores are probably going to be on hold.

Thought For The Day:

Sometimes, I shock myself with the smart stuff I say and do.

Other times, I try to get out of the car with my seat belt on.

Antigonish…

We left Moncton, New Brunswick, this morning about 11 am, heading for Antigonish, Nova Scotia, about 185 miles away.

But before we left, I wanted to top off the air in the tires on both the coach and the toad. The colder weather has lowered the air pressure, and one of my coach tires has a slow leak…it loses a pound or so a week.

Luckily, I don’t have to go anywhere. Since the rig has an on-board air compressor for the air brakes and the airbag suspension, all I have to do is plug my air hose into a jack inside one of the front compartments and start the engine.

This works out well because the coach tires can only be filled at a truck stop or tire maintenance shop. Unlike car tires, and the ones on the toad that are aired up to 30 – 40 pounds of pressure, the coach tires need 100 – 115 pounds.

This only took about 15 minutes, and then we were on our way.

We arrived in Antigonish about 3 pm and got set up. And after puttering for about an hour, we went out to find a place to grab a bite of dinner.

We found a place called the Main Street Cafe that turned out to be really good. Jan had the Island Sunset Grilled Chicken Breast, and I had the Grilled Pork Chop with Cranberry & Mango Salsa. Really good.

After dinner, we ran back to a local grocery store to pick up some fresh fruit. Normally, we stay stocked up, but we had to eat up all we had before coming into Canada.

When we got home, I tried to set up the satellite with no luck. This far north, the satellites are pretty low on the horizon, and there’s a big tree in the way.

So I guess we’ll just have to read! Oh, the horror!!

Fantastic Sunset . . .

Today started off with a new baby Landon photo.

All together now…… Ahhhhhhh!

Jan’s only been back 3 days, and she’s already going through Landon withdrawal.

The day ended with a fantastic sunset. It looked like the sky was on fire.

Summer’s Last Gasp . . .

Ended up not going to bed last night (this morning?) until about 3:15 am, so I didn’t get up until about 10:45, giving Jan some extra computer time.

For lunch, we had some of Jan’s delicious Tuna Pasta Salad that she had made before we left Horseshoe Lakes. Hopefully, she’ll make some more soon. It is really good.

After lunch, I took apart my Logitech Trackball Wheel Mouse to try to fix the scroll wheel. It stopped working last night, and at first, I thought it might have been a program glitch, so I rebooted, but that didn’t fix the problem.

Logitech Trackball Wheel

Everything worked except for the scroll wheel, so I took it apart and discovered the problems.

Cats!

Or at least our cat’s hair. The scroll wheel has small slots in it that an LED shines through to show rotation. This area was completely clogged with hair. So obviously not mine.

I cleaned it all out and then started to put it back together. I finally got it, but it took a while. It would certainly have helped if I had taken this photo of it before I took it apart because the wheel mechanism has six small parts, and it all just kind of falls out when you open the case.

Logitech Trackball Wheel - open

Finally getting it back together, it’s now working fine.

Later, I called Galveston Bay RV Resort to get our reservation in for this coming November. We’ve spent the last 3 years there, and really like the place. We plan on getting there the Sunday before Thanksgiving and leaving around the 1st of February.

Later in the afternoon, I put up the final piece of our RV Quick Shades on the driver’s side window. I put up the two big windshield pieces yesterday after we got here, but we’re parked facing almost due west, and the afternoon sun really bakes in, so I wanted to cover everywhere the sun comes in.

It looks like this hot weather we’re seeing is Summer’s last gasp. It was 92 here in Elkhart today, with 96 coming tomorrow, and Saturday and Sunday coming in at 87 and 75, respectively, for the highs.

By Monday, the high is supposed to be 67 degrees! Then we’re supposed to have about 10 days of weather with highs in the low 70’s and lows in mid 40’s.

NICE!

Around 5:45 pm Jan, and I headed right down the road to King Wha, a really good Chinese restaurant. Very good food and really friendly people. And like last night, we sat around and talked for another hour or so before we headed home for the night.

It’s really good to be back in Elkhart. It’s become almost like a second home.

A Nice Dreary Day . . .

Jan and I started out this nice, dreary morning by having breakfast in downtown Celina at The Fountain, a really good small-town diner, right on the square.

After we finished our meal, Jan and I walked across the street to the courthouse square to take in the small Farmer’s Market that was set up there. Jan found some Halloween jewelry that she just had to have. She has jewelry for just about every holiday.

After we left the Market, we drove over to a small house next door to the City Library. Here, they sell used books left over from the library or donated for sale. In fact, Jan found two J. A. Jance books she had been looking for, and only paid 25 cents each. Nice!

Getting back to the rig, I decided to get in a nap in preparation for the upcoming rally. Gotta get my rest in while I can.

About 4 pm, Chris and Charles Yust dropped by for a while. Chris and Charles are agents for GMAC insurance and handle my insurance.

A little after 5 pm, Jan and I headed over to Pizza Hut, where we met Joe and Marcia Jones for dinner. We had a great time getting to know them, and the pizza was really good too.

Getting back to the rig, the rain that we had been promised all day finally started to roll in. But it didn’t seem to last too long, so maybe it won’t be too bad when we start parking the early birds.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a rally without a little rain. Or a lot, either.

Chili, Four Ways + . . .

The last couple of days have been a little busy as the sand trucks start coming in, prepositioning sand for when fracking starts on Tuesday. Originally, it was set to go on Monday, but it got delayed.

When we got a new generator the other day, our just-filled 500-gallon water tank went with the old one. And the new one was pretty empty. Our service guy said he’d get someone out here to fill it, but I think that got lost in the changeover. We were told that morning that from now on, all the gate guards here would get our water and diesel from the rig suppliers. But there was some confusion as to who we should call to get service.

So late yesterday afternoon, we ran out of water. Of course, the immediate solution was to just turn on our pump and use the water from our RV tank. No problem with that since I made sure we came over here with a full tank. But we quickly realized the REAL problem was that now our misting system on the fan didn’t work since it comes from the external tank. BUMMER!

As they say, you never miss something until it’s gone. And boy did we miss the mister. There’s a lot of difference between a fan blowing 100-degree air and one blowing 75-degree air with the mister.

We did finally track down who to call later in the afternoon and were told they would have someone out about 5:30 tomorrow morning, which was fine. But they actually showed up about 10 pm this evening, which was better. So, hot today, mister tomorrow.

I mentioned the other day about fracking using water, sand, and a little detergent. The water pressure fractures the rock, the sand holds the fractures open, and the detergent kind of lubricates things. And since most fracking takes place at 10,000 to 12,000 feet down, and the water table is usually just a couple of hundred feet down, it’s always funny to see some of the anti-fracking propaganda about all the problems fracking causes with the water supply.

One of the most visual ones has been shown on TV and in the movies, where people light the water coming out of their tap, thus ‘proving’ that fracking is evil and puts methane in the water supply.

But a recently uncovered State of Michigan pamphlet blows it all out of the water, so to speak. Published in 1965, it details the problems and dangers due to naturally occurring methane found in water supplies in Michigan. This was about 20 years before any fracking was done in the area. So there.

Brandi and Lowell are in New Orleans this weekend, along with her BFF Shawna and husband Jason. They’re celebrating Brandi’s 40th birthday a couple of weeks early, so while they’re gone, Aunt Sherry is Landon-sitting, and it looks like they’re having a good time.

I think this was taken at one of the lakes in their new subdivision. What I want to know is what Aunt Sherry did to get him to hold still for this picture, and are drugs involved?

Landon with Aunt Sherry

Most of the pictures I take of him, he’s just a blur.

For dinner tonight, Jan fixed Chili, Four Ways +. We found that we can buy Cincinnati’s famous Skyline Chili in cans at many Wal-Marts, so we stock up when we can.

Chili, Four Ways, Cincinnati style is spaghetti, with Skyline Chili, Cheese, and Beans on top. The + comes from the fact that she added some Habanero Rotel Tomatoes to the mix for a little extra kick.

It would have been Chili, Five Ways if we had added diced onions, but we didn’t have any. But even Four Ways, it was really good. A quick, easy, delicious meal. And we’ve got leftovers for tomorrow.

Soon? We Hope . . .

After coffee and muffins this morning, we just took it easy, enjoying the quiet before the gate, so to speak.

About 2 pm, I headed over to the Wal-Mart in Pleasanton to go ahead and stock us up with groceries so we won’t have to worry about that for a while if we get a gate in the next couple of days. Was kind of surprised to see that the place wasn’t very busy at all.

But I think that was because everyone was out on I-37 heading back to San Antonio from Corpus and the Valley. When I got on the Interstate heading for Pleasanton, I was in the middle of a solid two lanes of traffic heading north. But then coming home, the road was pretty empty.

For dinner, about 6 pm, we had some of the Wacky Mac tuna pasta salad that had been marinating in the fridge since she made it yesterday. And as I had thought, the tomato, spinach, and beet powders listed on the package are just there to color the pasta naturally. They certainly didn’t change the taste. But it was really delicious, and we each had two bowls.

I’ve been going through our bins a little more, pulling out the big items we’ll need on the gate. Or may need.

This first one we didn’t need at all last year since we stayed at one gate the entire 3 months, and we were only about two miles off the Interstate.

But in 2012 we were at four different gates, and used this Wilson Booster on two of them. And on one of them, I was hitting a cellphone tower 21 miles away.

Wilson Electronics DB Pro Cellular Signal Booster

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

I had the directional antenna mounted on a 20-foot pole made up of 4 – 5-foot antenna sections from Radio Shack. When I bought ours in April of 2012, it was about $350, but now it runs about $400. But since we get our Internet access as well as cell service this way, when we need it, we need it.

I’ve got a few more items, but I’ll save those for tomorrow.

We’ll be up early tomorrow to check in at the office to see if there’s anything on the schedule for us.

Week Two . . .

Well, after thinking things might be slowing to a halt, today was actually busier than yesterday. A lot of new companies came in to do their thing, I guess, getting ready for the frack crew to come in. Of course, that time frame keeps changing.

At first, we were told the frack would start in four or five days from last Tuesday, when we got here. Then yesterday we heard two to three weeks. But this afternoon, a guy who had just come from the frack site over in Louisiana said they should be finished up next week and then come over here. He also said that it could take two months to frack the three holes here.

Which brings up another thing. We were originally told there were two holes being fracked at this pad, but the guy said three. And when I drove down to the pad this afternoon after everyone left, there were three wells, so who knows

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

I also saw several pieces of equipment still on the pad, so that bodes well, too.

If they do go two months or so here, that’ll be great, because the next frack after this one is scheduled for right up the road, about 1/4 mile from here. If so, those next three wells should easily take us to the end of November when we’ll head back to Houston for the winter

Jan has kind of been worried about how busy this frack will be, mainly because of the ‘killer’ pace last year, where we had almost 500 vehicles a day coming in through the gate each day, and of course, leaving later. That meant we had almost 1000 login/logouts in a 24-hour period. That’s about one every two minutes.

And then in 2013, we were on a frack gate for the entire three months, and were doing 250 to 350 vehicles a day coming in. But I reminded her that we’ve actually never been on a ‘single’ frack gate.

In 2013, besides the frack, they were hauling water out from our frack pond to another site, running two workover rigs, one drill rig, and building a pipeline. It wasn’t just a frack.

And last year, at its peak, we sometimes had two fracks, two workover rigs, and two drill rigs going at the same time. Of course, we were making a lot more, $500-$600, than the standard $150 a day, but still . . .

I finally got a chance to check the water pressure at the well and only found about 20psi, which explains the weak showers we were getting. So I guess I’ll just use the well water to keep the tanks filled and not try to run directly off it.

When I drove down to the pad this afternoon, I also checked out one of the three frack ponds they have here.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

Really big, bigger than others I’ve seen. In fact, this photo only shows about half of the pond anyway.

Jan’s decided to put off her haircut trip into Carthage tomorrow, hoping we might get a day off later this week so we can go together and have dinner.

Of course, she’s also afraid that the hair salons in a small town like Carthage won’t have her haircut records anyway.

So’s an Oven . . .

So far, the weather is holding pretty steady, and not too bad at all. The temps are staying in the high 80’s/low 90’s with low 70’s at night. Very nice overall, especially compared to our first two years gate guarding down in south Texas.

Back then, we regularly saw temps in the hundred teens, but of course, as everyone says, “It’s a dry heat.”

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

Yeah, so’s an oven.

And as far as rain goes, that’s been pretty nice also. We’ve had a couple of 10-15 minute showers, but nothing sustained or heavy. And we’re not supposed to have the possibility of any more rain until Monday or Tuesday.

Here’s hoping.

A couple of times, the sky has gotten really dark, and I thought we were in for it, but according to the Rainy Days weather radar app, the storms just skirted around us. Sometimes even splitting apart as it passed over us, leaving us nice and dry.

Lucky!

The problem with our DirecTV receiver not getting guide info has not come back, so tonight I’ll probably swap domes again to see if the problem reappears with the new dome.

Jamie, our supervisor/service guy, is supposed to be here tomorrow morning to bring us some more water, since we didn’t have a full 500 gallons when we got here, only about 350 gallons.

I can tell we’re getting low since the output of the pump is pulsing slightly, but we’ve got a full rig water tank, so we can just switch over to it for a while if we need to. He’s also supposed to bring me a hard hat for going on the pad. That way, I can drop our garbage off at the trash trailer.

I don’t know if he will do our two-week generator service (oil and filter change) while he’s here, since it’s a few days early, so we’ll see.

I put in orders to Amazon and Jet.com today, so we’ll see how the ‘address’ thing works. I tried to be a little descriptive when I entered the address, but unlike Jet.com, Amazon was a little uptight about what I wanted to enter as an address.

I put the street address that Tony, the landowner, had given me in Address 1, and then in Address 2, I put “RV at Drill Site”. Well, Amazon kept telling me there was a problem with the entry in Address 1, so I tried a number of different versions and spellings with no luck. It wouldn’t let me proceed past that point.

Finally, I removed the “RV at Drill Site”, in Address 2, and suddenly it was fine with Address 1 now. So I tried putting “RV at Drill Site” down in the space for “Gate Codes, Security Codes” and it took it. So we’ll see how it works.

On the other hand, Jet.com had no problem with “RV at Drill Site” in Address 2, so that’s what I used there.

I wish they’d let you be a little descriptive in your directions, you know, like, “Quarter Mile SW from Blue Moon BBQ”. The local delivery guy would know exactly where that is.

Or maybe let you enter latitude/longitude coordinates. That would work.

Still don’t know what they do about the Labor Day holiday here. In the past, some of our rigs have shut down, and some keep working. Guess we’ll find out on Monday.

It would be nice to have a night off for dinner in B/CS, though.

Leave Well Enough Alone . . .

Been wanting to open-carry your foil, saber, or épée on the way home from fencing practice?

Or think you’d feel safer bar-hopping on Saturday night carrying your Texas Toothpick on your belt?

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

A Texas Toothpick. Also known as a Bowie Knife.

Well, as of today, September 1st, it’s now legal here in Texas to carry knives longer than 5.5 inches, the previously legal length.

Don’t mess with Texas.

About 12:30, I drove out to the Ranger Station to re-up until next Wednesday, the 6th . . . when we’re supposed to be back here from Colorado River.

Yes, we’re actually supposed to be there, but they got flooded out and probably won’t be open until the middle of September. So we just stayed here, and since the park offices were all closed, there was no one to talk to. But we heard that corporate said it was OK, so we went with that.

So now we’re ‘legal’ here until the 6th, when we’ll check right back in here for another two weeks.

If we don’t go gate guarding.

With that straightened out, I drove over into Willis to pick up a few things at Kroger’s. It was interesting to see that although their gas station was pretty busy, with two or three cars lined up at every pump, the price was still $1.99

The store was better stocked than on our last visit, but there were still some odd shortages. For instance, they were completely out of any type of Meow Mix cat food (Karma’s favorite brand), both wet and dry. And they were fully stocked with Coffeemate Coffee Creamers, but were completely out of any International Delight flavors.

Leaving, I decided to take the back way out, which took me past the Whataburger . . . and found it now open. In fact, they had just opened for the first time at 10:30 this morning, and were only serving a limited menu, drive-through only –

Burgers, Fries, and Drinks.

Well, what else do you need?

So I got a couple of #6’s to bring home for lunch. Nice!

Last June, our Sharp microwave malfunctioned and would not let the door open. So when I finally got it open, I found that one of the interlocking door latches had broken, so I went online and ordered a new one.

Here’s that blog.

So for $6.80, I was able to fix it. For a while, at least.

A few months later, it started acting up again, but with a different problem. When you started it up, the timer would count down, but sometimes the light would go off, and when that happened, it would stop heating, but keep counting.

But if we pushed in on the control panel, the light would come back on, and it would start heating again. It seemed to be heat-related somehow. It might work for the first 5 minutes cooking something. But if we then tried to cook something else, it would act up.

So yesterday I decided to take it all apart again and see what I could find. I used some silicone lube on the latch moving parts, and exercised the several microswitches.

And when I put it back together, it worked. But now the interior light, which should be on only when the door is open or you’re heating something, now stays on all the time. But it now cooks with no problem.

So I guess I could take it all apart again, but then something else might go wrong, so, since it’s only a light bulb staying on, I think I’ll leave well enough alone this time.

Happy Almost Birthday, Miss Piper!

Jan and I headed out about 10:30, traveling up the Clear Lake area to meet our granddaughter, Miss Piper, at The Egg and I for breakfast.

We were spending the day together to celebrate her almost birthday. The reason for this pre-celebration celebration is because her actual birthday is next Friday, but we’ll be celebrating Landon’s post-birthday birthday celebration.

His birthday was actually August 20, but since that was kind of in the middle of the whole closing on the new house/moving-in thing, Brandi scheduled his big party for this coming Saturday.

Hopefully, you got all that.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

Piper is working in Medical Administration at M. D. Anderson Cancer Hospital up in Houston, which is also where Jan worked back in the 80’s. So it was interesting to hear them comparing parking lots, buildings, and benefits.

Piper is not really happy with the long drive into Houston five days a week, but since she works from 7 am to 3 pm, she misses some of the traffic problems. Even better, M. D. Anderson is opening a facility down in this area, so she hopes to be able to transfer when the time comes.

Piper said she’ll have her BS in Healthcare Administration with a minor in Psychology in less than a year, and then she starts on her Master’s.

Jan and I are really proud of her.

I had my usual Two-Egg Breakfast, while Jan had her Onion, Mushroom, Tomato Omelet with a side salad,

while Miss Piper went with this.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

You can eat like this when you’re skinny.

After breakfast, we split up, with Jan and Piper heading out for Mani-Pedi’s and shopping, while I headed over, first to Wal-Mart to pick up a USB printer cable and a pair of windshield wipers.

The printer cable was for Miss Piper’s birthday present, an HP 6952 printer. The new printer didn’t come with one, but I figured I would just use the one from her old printer. But it turns out she didn’t have an ‘old’ printer, which is why she needed a printer for her birthday.

And since Piper mentioned that one of the wipers on her Mazda Miata was coming apart, I picked up a pair of those, too.

Still needing to kill time, I decided to spend it at the Baybrook Mall Starbucks having a Salted Caramel Latte, Venti, of course. And on the way, I drove by our old house to see if they’d made any changes, but nothing noticeable yet.

As I was leaving the Starbucks, I saw this car and didn’t recognize the trident emblem on the front.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

But after checking the rear, I knew why. You don’t see them very often.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

It’s a Maserati sedan. A Levante that starts at about $75,000.

We all met up at Piper’s apartment a little after 3 pm, so I could set up her new printer and get it configured. Then, when we left about an hour later, I installed the new wiper blades on the way.

Tomorrow, Jan and I are heading up to Brandi and Lowell’s for an inaugural pool party.

Even Baxter likes the pool.

Really looking forward to it.

Cake and Keto . . .

Yesterday afternoon, Jan and I got together at King Food with our long-time friends Bob and Maria Sutton.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

We’ve known them since the mid-80’s when we met over Commodore Amigas at a local computer store. Jan and I stayed Keto with KF’s Chicken with Hot Garlic Sauce,

and the Broccoli and Hot Garlic Sauce.

And of course, a bowl of their Hot and Sour Soup

It’s been a while since we’ve gotten together, and we need to do it more often.

This morning, I went outside and added a 2nd magnet to the top outside passenger side solar screen on the rig. For some reason, that’s the only one that seems to come loose occasionally during wind and rain. So this should take care of it.

This afternoon, Jan and I headed out about 1 pm to have lunch once again at our new favorite Black Bear Diner. And we both had our new favorite meals, Jan’s Big Burger with Avocado, no bun. And a Dinner Salad for the side.

I had my usual New York Steak and Eggs, also with a Dinner Salad instead of the Fruit and English Muffin.

Unfortunately, I left my phone at home, so no photos.

After we got home, our daughter Brandi sent over a couple of photos for me to play with.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

The first one is of Landon, his best friend Sophie, and Landon’s dog, Baxter. The second one is of Sophie’s dog, Dakota. Unfortunately, Dakota was ill and had to be put down recently.

Landon and Sophie are having a birthday party together this coming Saturday, so Brandi wanted me to combine the two photos to put on their birthday cake.

So this was the first pass.

Then I cropped the result down a little tighter.

Finally, I eliminated the background, leaving just this part.

I’ll be looking forward to seeing how it looks on the cake.

A Real Mess . . .

I went outside this afternoon, and after first taking care of some other rig chores, I took another look at the rig’s wiring harness in the engine compartment. And boy, is it a real mess.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

And right now I’m not yet sure what goes where.

All of this was tie-wrapped into a big bundle and tucked back under the frame member out of sight. So I cut it loose and tried to make sense of it.

I have two bundles enclosed in a wire loom that looks to have been pulled loose from somewhere, but it’s not obvious from where. And then the wires don’t match each other.

Our rig had two owners before us, and it looks like both of them made their own changes, mostly to add wiring for the towed vehicle lighting hookup.

So I’ll be back on the phone with Spartan tomorrow, trying to figure out where this bundle connects up with the rig’s lights.

Yes, Two!

Jan and I were on our way down to Galveston a little before 1 pm, with the Sunflower Cafe our brunch destination.

We’ve been eating here for years, and it’s always been delicious. And today was no different.

Jan had the Little Breakfast,

while I got the Big Breakfast,

which is the Little Breakfast, plus two pancakes.

Pecan, in this case.

Our brunch was great, and we just sat there talking for a good while, enjoying our life.

Then we drove down along Harborside Dr., looking for the U.S.S. Texas at its dry dock.

And we did find it.

But we really couldn’t get a good shot of it. But I did find this one later online, already out of the water.

A great photo.

And I also really like this piece of artwork.

That’s the San Jacinto Monument in the background in the sunset, where it used to be docked.

And to make the day even better for Jan, she had two, yes, TWO, confirmed pelican sightings.

So she was a happy camper.

Coming home, we made a Sam’s Club stop at the La Marque location, first topping off the Jeep’s tank with gas at $2.91/gallon, a new low for this area. Then, after picking up a few things at the store, we got home a little after 4 pm.

A very nice day.

Stocking Up . . .

Looks like we finally have an opening date for the new Great Wolf Lodge that’s being built here in Webster.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

It’s November 15, 2024, and you can start making your online reservations now. And you’ll get a 30% discount using the promotional code COUNTDOWN.

The resort is expected to have 532 rooms and 27 acres of space.

The resort is expected to hire more than 500 full- and part-time workers – called “Pack Members” – by the time doors open to the public next year.

This time of the year, Jan starts stocking up . . .on pretty much anything pumpkin.

Pumpkin Spice Coffee Creamer is a favorite, but unfortunately, since they need to be refrigerated and have an expiration date, you can only stock up so much. But what she can stock up on is her favorite Glade Golden Pumpkin & Spice Air Freshener.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

It doesn’t have to be refrigerated and doesn’t have an expiration date. So we found 3 cans at Kroger’s and ordered 2 more from Amazon. We should be stocked up now.

Of course, it could be Little Debbie’s. Like Twinkies, they will probably last forever.

As I mentioned in a past blog –

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

Later, I read through the ingredient list on the back of the package.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

Note that the word ‘Pumpkin’ does not appear anywhere on that list.

I guess if you parse it correctly, the box says they’re ‘Pumpkin Spice Rolls, not Pumpkin Rolls. And it does have pumpkin spices in it – cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg. But I think the reason they’re pretty tasty is that the first two ingredients are Corn Syrup and Sugar.

But I still think Little Debbie is a liar.

Tomorrow, Jan’s getting her toesies done, so lunch will be at the right-next-door King’s Bierhaus once again, with a Wal-Mart stop on the way home.

And I’m off until Wednesday. Yay!

It Caught Jan’s Eye . . .

Lunch today was at Denny’s, but rather than our usual Ultimate Omelets, this caught Jan’s eye as we came in the door.

It was their Pumpkin Pecan Pancakes, which Jan got as a Slam,

with Scrambled Eggs, Bacon, Hash Browns, and Fruit.

The Tomato Rose was a special touch for Jan from Hugo, the cook, who says we’re his VIP customers.

While we were there, a young guy walked by with this backpack.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

Kind of neat, I guess. But actually, the kitten didn’t seem too happy about it.

Finishing up, it was on over to HEB for our weekly stuff, ending with gas at $2.75/gallon, and then home.

We’re about 3 months out from our 9 Day Western Caribbean Cruise on Royal Caribbean’s Jewel Of The Seas, starting December 7th, so Jan and I have started looking at Shipboard Packages and Excursions.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

We definitely don’t want the Deluxe Beverage Package, where at $63/day, EACH, you can drink as much booze as you want, plus all the other drinks, sodas, coffees, etc.

If we both were to get this package, it would total almost half of what we’re paying for the entire cruise. I don’t think either of us could drink that much of anything.

Since we mostly just drink iced tea and coffee, the only one we’re really interested in is the Club Select Card, which is a fixed $31 each for the entire cruise, and lets us have a lot of specialty coffees all around the ship.

The only other Shipboard item we want is the VOOM Internet package, which goes for $18/day PER device. So for my phone, tablet, and computer, it would be $43 per day with the multi-device discount.

Gonna have to think about this one.

Looking at excursions, we’ve found several at each port of call that we’re interested in, but unlike booking excursions on our Viking cruise back in 2019, the RCL app doesn’t seem to warn us about excursions that overlap, time-wise, in case we would like to do more than one.

Last night and tonight, we watched the last two episodes of Evil on Paramount+. A great show, with good ratings, but for some reason, Paramount decided not to renew it for a 5th season. But it is being shopped to other networks, so here’s hoping.

Then, after the last Evil tonight, we watched the first episode of Only Murders In The Building for this, the 4th season.

Kind of wondering if this is going to end up like Murder She Wrote. Cabot Cove had to be the most dangerous place in the county. With a population of only 3560 people, someone died every week.

So with 264 episodes, i.e., deaths, that’s almost 8% of the population. Mapped onto the population of NYC, that would be almost 670,000 people killed.

Tomorrow will probably be the Yummy Yummy Chinese Buffet.

If You Don’t See A Blog Tomorrow . . .

It possibly means that we won the $1.1 Billion Powerball lottery tonight.

But probably not.

As I said last night, we had planned to have lunch at Spring Creek BBQ today, but this intervened.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

I told Jan that $40 is about what we spend at Spring Creek BBQ, so off we went to Bacliff.

We had seen this place as we drove down Hwy 146, but didn’t put the name with it.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

The place had a definite ‘Dive Bar’ feel, but over the years, we’ve had some of our meals at places like this.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

And this was no exception.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

Moist, tender Brisket, meaty Ribs, spicy Sausage, and BBQ Turkey for Jan. Plus a very nice Salad Bar.

All really delicious!

And Jan says the Banana Pudding was the best she’d ever had.

She told me when I went back to the buffet for the pudding that she just wanted a spoonful of mine. But I’ve fallen for this before, but not this time, so I got a lot extra.

She ended up having 3 spoonfuls.

Lexi, our server, said they have a different buffet every day of the week, Mexican, Seafood, etc., and a Breakfast Buffet on the weekends.

We’ll be back.

Leaving Hook’s, we took some time driving along the water in Bacliff, and found a large number of tiny houses like this one scattered around the area.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

A really lovely area.

We also drove by Doggone Crazy and saw that Mona had added the two new food trucks she had mentioned, but we didn’t stop.

Coming home, we stopped off at Wal-Mart for $2.43/gallon gas, and then home for the day.

Though we only had about 1/2″ of rain yesterday, and a little less than an inch today, the cold front coming through was a lot harder on Houston, about 25 miles north of us.

But said cold front meant our high temp today was 83°, with lows in the low 70’s the next few days.

Going old school, I ordered an old-timey electric clock from Amazon, one like this.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

We’ve got plenty of digital clocks around the rig, but not one that will tell us how long the power was off. We have a couple of lights that will reset when the power goes out, but nothing that tells us how long it was off.

Following up on the success of StarShip Flight #10, SpaceX says they plan to launch #11 sometime in the next 30 days. And it looks like it’s possible that this flight will use the new model V3, rather than the V2 model in flight #10.

In addition, Musk said that within the next 6-7 years, SpaceX hopes to be launching up to 10 flights A DAY!

So far, we have no idea about what we’re doing tomorrow, but we’ll come up with something, you can be sure.

But Yummy Yummy is back.

Finishing up at Yummy’s, we did the Wal-Mart thing and then home.

One thing I forgot to mention after our visit to Mia’s Table this past Friday is that they are one of those places that has a self-service soft ice cream for dessert.

And Jan and I both remarked how good their soft serve was, probably the best we ever tasted. And Jan and I know our soft serve.

Back in the early 70’s, along with my father, we owned a Tastee-Freez up in Greeneville, TN. Think Dairy Queen, but more back east.

We had all the soft serve staples, sundaes, frozen desserts, milkshakes, etc. Plus hamburgers, hot dogs, fries, corn dogs, pizza, and fried chicken. And according to our chicken supplier, we outsold the local KFC.

Anyway, Mia’s soft serve was fantastic. And when we asked a manager, we found out why.
They custom-make their own soft serve mix, unlike most places, even DQ, that buy their mix from a local dairy supplier. And it shows.

The Nancy Grace Roman Telescope SpaceX Heavy launch went off right on schedule this morning and went perfectly.

The telescope, named after Nancy Grace Roman, NASA’s first Chief Astronomer, and known as the ‘Mother of the Hubble’, is presently on a 30-day, million-mile journey out to the Sun-Earth Lagrange Point 2.

L2, as it’s known, is a gravitational parking spot directly behind the Earth, away from the Sun. Because of the interacting gravitational fields between the Earth and the Sun, spacecraft parked in this area tend to stay there without a lot of station-keeping. Plus, the Earth blocks the Sun from interfering with the viewing.

On to Elkhart . . .

For some reason, I woke up at 6:30 this morning, earlier than I planned, but couldn’t go back to sleep, so up early it was.

The only problem was that, not normally up at this unholy hour, I found it was still pitch-black outside. So I had to wait to do outside stuff anyway.

But I was able to spend some time stowing away stuff inside. By the time I got coffee started, it was starting to get light, so I went outside and started bringing in the satellite stuff and tidying up around the rig. By this time, Jan was up and about, and a little later, she heated us up Jimmy Dean Egg Sandwiches for breakfast.

After relaxing a while with our coffee, we got prepared to leave, and I discovered a problem. I had planned to raise the levelers and pull the coach up about ten feet, so I would be able to pull the toad in behind and hook up before we pulled out. The problem was, the levelers wouldn’t come up . . . or at least the control panel said they weren’t all the way up.

I went outside to check and found them all the way up, so I went to the right rear bay to check the hydraulic fluid level in the Power Gear reservoir, and as I suspected (and hoped), the fluid level was low. The reason this makes a difference is that these systems use the level in the reservoir to signal to the control panel whether or not the levelers have retracted all the way. If the fluid level is low, the system thinks that they haven’t retracted.

And of course, the quick (and cheap- I like cheap!) solution is to top off the reservoir with ATF transmission fluid, and all’s right with the world. I always keep a bottle of it in the coach because without it I’m stuck. If my coach thinks the levelers are down, even if they weren’t, it won’t let you put it in gear.

Now if it only did that when your power cord is still plugged in.

By the time we finally left the park, I had decided to get diesel at a station we had passed last week that had it for $3.77, so Jan was following me in the toad, and we would hook up after we filled up.

The problem was, I couldn’t find where I left the gas station. I mean, it was right there last week. Where could it have gone? Who could have moved it?

Finally, after circling around and up and down several country roads, Jan called me on her cell and ‘suggested’ that I was lost and she was tired of driving around in circles. And that we should just head on out along our route and fill up along the way, which we did in Rockville, about 15 miles down the road.

I didn’t think she really needed to use that ‘tone’, though. You married guys know the ‘tone’ I’m talking about. You know the one where she thinks you’re lost, and she thinks you’re an idiot for getting lost, but she wants to be nice about it because she knows that otherwise you just might circle around central Indiana three or four more times before you finally give it up as a lost cause.

That’s the ‘tone’ I’m talking about.

Anyway, taking US41 north, we finally picked up I-65. And as seems to be a usual ‘feature’ of Indiana (and Illinois, too) Interstates, the road immediately went to crap. And the I-80 Toll Road was even worse.

Why is it that toll roads always seem to be even worse than non-toll roads? Where’s all the money going?

Certainly not for maintenance.

We finally pulled into the Elkhart RV Campground a little after 4 pm and were directed to our site.

Then, a little after 5, we headed over to our favorite local Mexican place, El Maguey. And as usual, we ended up just sitting around and talking for a couple of hours before finally heading home.

Brandi sent this picture of Landon at his daycare, entitled “Couldn’t quite make it to nap time”.

Almost, Almost Done . . .

Well, I thought I would be done picking up gift certificates today, but it was not to be. I had two places to finish up, but one owner didn’t get back in town on time (and in fact won’t be back until Tuesday), and the other one didn’t get the certificates printed out this afternoon. So I’ll see her tomorrow.

Leaving there, I stopped off at the local Moose Lodge to pay next year’s dues before heading over to Wal-Mart to check out their laptop selection, but they didn’t have anything I liked.

Getting back to the rig, our daughter Brandi called with the latest Landon story. Seems she was driving with Landon in the back seat, and she sneezed. From the back, she hears “Bless you, mommy”. She figures he learned it at daycare since he’s never said it before.

Later, Mike and Elaine, Jan, and I headed out to have dinner at Big Bamboo’s Dockside Grille on Grand Lake, and then we stopped off at DQ for a frosty treat.

As seems to be usual for rallies, we’re expecting rain for the next couple of days, just in time to start parking rigs.

Rain and mud. Oh boy!

Magic Liquid . . .

No, not booze

Still no gate news, but as I said yesterday, I don’t really expect any until tomorrow, or even Tuesday. The entire facility has been locked up all weekend, with no one around except us and our neighbors.

Later in the afternoon, Jan fixed up a cold tuna pasta salad for us to have over the next few days. For the pasta, she tried something different – Wacky Mac pasta.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

All different colors, the pasta is colored and flavored with tomato, spinach, and beet powders, so it will be interesting to try it out. Along with the pasta, Jan mixed tuna, chopped-up bread and butter pickles, mayo, and Provence Spice. Then stored it in the fridge for a couple of days to let the flavors merge. Really looking forward to it.

One thing Jan wanted me to pass on to those of you who have bought the Microwave Pasta Boat, which I mentioned earlier.Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

She loves this for doing pasta, any type of pasta, in the microwave, but she has found that if you use the normal cooking time for your pasta in the Pasta Boat, it will probably be overcooked.

For example, if your cooking directions say 18-20 minutes, Jan suggests starting with 15 minutes instead.

Brandi, Lowell, and Landon are spending the long weekend at the Woodlands Resort, north of Houston.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

They have a two-story waterslide, a river for tubing, and a dancing water fountain for the kids to play in. And of course, face painting and balloon animals (superheroes?)

Landon’s having a ball.

The magic liquid I’m referring to is Strike-Hold. Here’s what I said about it back in June.

What I saw when I walked up to the booth was a guy holding an extension cord with a small lit light bulb screwed into a socket on the end.

And his hand, and the lit bulb looked something like this.

Strike-Hold Electric Bulb

HOLY CRAP!

Now that got my attention.

Turns out it’s done with a product called Strike-Hold being sold at the rally by Ken Murphy and his wife, Marilyn.

Strike-Hold CLP is marketed as a cleaner, lubricant, protector, and demoisturizer.

Strike-Hold Bottles

It was originally developed for use by the military to protect weapons from sand. When the parts are sprayed with Strike-Hold and allowed to dry, it functions as an excellent dry lubricant that repels the sand.

As far as the underwater light bulb, the spray has a dielectric insulation value of over 38,000 volts. Thoroughly spraying the socket and the bulb base is all that’s needed. Ken would even unscrew the bulb while it was underwater and then screw it back in again.

And on the website is another incredible demo where an electric drill is sprayed internally, and then, while running, it is immersed in a bowl of water, and keeps running.

I came home with several bottles.

If you would like to order some, you can contact Ken Murphy at 214-850-4677 or kmurphytx@live.com.

I’ve been using Strike-Hold since then on anything electrical, from my 50-amp power plug to my toad taillight plugs. And it works great.

Jan and I have been going through stuff, getting ready for our gate. And one of the things I was checking out was our Kindle Fire. The last time we really used it was last November when we finished gate guarding.

Jan used it at night on the gate to surf the web and read Kindle books. But I remembered that toward the end, I was having a problem charging the Fire. So I was not surprised to find that it would not charge now either.

I tried 3 different chargers with no luck. Whatever the problem was, it seemed to be in the Fire itself. And a little Googling told me there was a known problem with the charger socket itself. Since we’d had the Fire for over two years, there was no warranty, so I was about ready to think about chucking it.

But Jan, bless her heart, suggested I try the Strike-Hold. Turning the Fire upside down, I sprayed some into the socket and let it sit for about 30 minutes.

And plugging it in, the Fire went right into charge mode until it was fully charged.

I love this stuff.

Even Less Happened Today . . .

Trucks stopped coming in. Trucks stopped coming out.

I made my sojourn into town this morning, a little after 11 am. Besides lunch and a couple of grocery items, I wanted to check out a Print and Mail place to see if we can receive packages there.

Turns out that they ship stuff out, but they don’t receive anything. And as far as they knew, no place in Carthage can handle receiving FedEx, UPS, or USPS, since you never know how Amazon is going to ship something. I guess now I’ll have to check in Henderson to see if they have anything.

After stopping at the Brookshire Brothers for a couple of things, I picked up lunch at the Whataburger again, basically for two reasons. We were still in a burger mood, and I needed to get rid of some trash.

We still don’t have a trash trailer here (and maybe not ever, apparently), and if I went somewhere else to get lunch, I’d have to make a whole ‘nother deal to drop off garbage.

We still want to try out El Rancho Grande, the Mexican place that Lynette and Gregg McHenry recommended, so maybe that will be this Friday. I did notice that the Jalapeno Tree, another Mexican place I passed today, was really busy.

When our Company Man left a little after 3 pm, he said they were finished up, and he would check with his boss to see if they were going to keep us here until the frack crew comes in, or dismiss us and then bring us back then.

And he had no idea when they would be here, since they’re working at another site right down the road. But our site is still active, since the production crew is still here. And when the last of them left about 5 pm, they said they’d be back at work tomorrow morning around 7 or 8 am.

As far as the site itself now, it’s completely dead with no lights at all. So as it stands right now, we’re shut down for the night, but not officially, so we’re still manning the gate. Although Jan stayed inside on her 6 – 11 pm shift tonight and just kept an eye out for anyone, I’m now outside as usual. We’ve had cases where we’ve been told everyone was gone for the night, and then someone shows up at 3 am to do something.

So we’ll see how it goes in the next few days.

August 31, 2016

It Walks!

Turns out our Drill Rig has feet.

And it just walks from hole to hole.

The last drill rig gate with multiple holes we worked was back in July-August of 2012, our very first year gate guarding. We were following a Marathon-H&P rig for most of the 4 months while we were down in South Texas, and our very last site was a two-holer,

But when they got ready to move to the next hole, about 25 feet away, it was a 2-3 day process. And we got those days off.

With pay.

Just as with rigging up and rigging down, we don’t do any logging with the moving either.

As far as the procedure goes, like here, the rig was built up on large flat metal plates, and when they got ready to move the rig, they first oiled up the plates to make them slippery. Then they brought in two big 100-ton cranes and positioned them side by side in the direction they wanted to move the rig.

Then, with the cranes pulling, they slowly moved the rig over the new hole, steering the 100+ ton rig by the cranes tugging more on one side than the other.

But on this Nabors rig, there are hydraulic pistons in the 4 pillars that support the rig, and they just walk it into place, steering it with a joystick. I’ve seen photos of walking rigs online, but they all had their ‘feet’ out to the sides of the rig, and you could see them walking. But with this rig, it’s all internal.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

What I’m not clear on is how the rig actually moves. And nobody I’ve asked seems to know. I mean, the pistons lift the rig, but what propels it in any certain direction? I can think of several ways, but I’ll find out for sure and let you know.

Anyway, with this setup, they can move the rig in just a few hours.

And we don’t get any time off.

I mentioned before about the sucky Verizon Internet here, but it turns out it’s only the 3G part that’s sucky. 4G is fine, with 8-10 Mbps down, and around 1Mbps up.

I noticed that when I did something data-wise on my Galaxy S5 phone, it moved right along. But anything through our Verizon AirCard (circa 2007) pretty much ground to a halt.

The reason I’m still using a 9-year-old 3G AirCard is that it’s grandfathered in with unlimited data. With all the Internet stuff I do, I use 25 to 30 GB a month. And that’s not streaming any movies or the like.

And if I upgrade to a 4G MiFi, I lose my unlimited data. I keep hearing about people getting special upgrade deals at RV shows or other places, but they never seem to apply to me. But I’ll keep looking.

I mentioned last night about the loss of Guide data that I was getting on my DirecTV system, and how I was going to swap out my new ‘dumpster diving acquired’ Winegard dome with my old original one that I’ve had since 2010.

I figured that the problem was either with my DirecTV HD receiver or something on their end not sending the guide data, but I was going to swap out my dome and then my cables to eliminate them before I called DirecTV.

But I may have been wrong.

When I changed out the domes early this morning, the problem went away, and it has stayed away for almost 24 hours. I’ll wait another day or so and then swap them back. And if the problem reappears, I’ll know for sure.

And if the dome IS the problem, I’m even more confused about what’s happening. The data stream coming down from the satellite is just 1’s and 0’s, with the guide info riding on a subcarrier along with the video information. If the receiver gets the video, it should also get the guide data. And the satellite dome shouldn’t be able to strip it out. It just doesn’t work that way.

And the other thing is that the guide data loss is intermittent, with the problem coming and going, because it does get data sometimes, otherwise, it wouldn’t work at all.

Of course, in the back of my mind, there’s always the thought that this problem was why the dome ended up being dumpster-dumped in the first place. But then why did it work fine for several months before the problem reappeared?

Just another question to keep me wondering.

Today was Blue Moon BBQ day, our first visit, and it won’t be our last. And even better, it’s only about a quarter mile back up the road.

Jan got their Stuffed Potato, filled with chopped brisket and sauce, and covered in cheese.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

She said it was really good and she’ll have it again next time.

I went with a combo of their Cowboy Cornbread and the Bean Pot beans.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

The Cowboy Cornbread has chopped brisket, tomatoes, chilies, and onions mixed into the batter, and then it’s all baked in a cast-iron skillet and then covered in cheese. And what you end up with is almost more fixin’s than you do cornbread.

And it’s delicious.

The Bean Pot is about half and half beans and brisket, mixed with their BBQ sauce, and then covered in cheese. I’m sensing a theme here.

I really like their BBQ sauce, very tasty, and it’s very hot. Even hotter than Famous Dave’s Devil Spit or Rudy’s Hot Sauce.

We’ll be going back very soon, in fact, probably this Saturday. Because Saturday is the only day that they have Hotshots. Hotshots are large fresh jalapeños, stuffed with 3 cheeses and chopped brisket, then wrapped in bacon and cooked on the pit.

Really looking forward to Saturday now.

Nana To The Rescue . . .

Although Fall doesn’t officially start until September 22, according to the forecasts for next week, it’s sneaking in a little early. And it’s going to help all the folks who still don’t have electricity for A/C’s, and probably won’t be next week either.

Although it hit 90° today, and we’re looking at 91° tomorrow and Saturday, Sunday the temps start dropping until we’re looking at the low 80’s/high 70’s by next weekend. But even better, we’ve got nighttime temperatures in the low 60’s/high 50’s.

Very, very nice.

There’s been a lot of talk on Facebook about the new Trails Collection membership now being offered to Thousand Trails members. If you haven’t noticed the link on your TT members page, it’s at the bottom of your Account Information. On the face it looks to be a good deal, but as seems to be usual with TT deals, there’s a few gotchas.

The Trails Collection is $199 per year and gives you access to 106 TT and Encore parks, with 13 on the list having an extra $20 per night.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

As you can see, the new parks are mostly clustered in 8 areas around the country.

Now for some of the fine print gotchas.

1. Your Trails Collection membership runs concurrently with your TT membership. And if you buy it at another time, it’s not prorated. So if your TT membership renews on April 1st, and you buy your TC membership on February 1st for $199, then when your TT membership renews two months later, you owe another $199.

2. You can stay for two weeks at an Affiliated Park, but you can not then move to another Affiliated Park. So you can’t go from park to park under the TC plan.

If my current Thousand Trails membership agreement allows me to go park-to-park among the Thousand Trails preserves, will I be able to go park-to-park among the Affiliated Resorts in Program?

No, if you stay more than four nights at an Affiliated Resort in the Program, you will need to wait seven days before visiting another Affiliated Resort in the Program.

But then the question comes up, can you move directly to or from a TT park to an Affiliated Park? And that’s where it gets a little fuzzy. Based on this paragraph in the Frequently Asked Questions, you can’t.

Can I go directly from a Thousand Trails preserve to an Affiliated Resort in the Program? Likewise, can I go directly from an Affiliated Resort in the Program to a Thousand Trails preserve?

No, if you stay more than four nights at an Affiliated Resort in the Program or a Thousand Trails preserve, you will need to wait seven days before visiting another Affiliated Resort in the Program or a Thousand Trails preserve.

So this morning I put in a call to TT to ask about just this fact, and here’s what Latoya said.

If your TT membership presently allows you to go park to park, then you can go directly to/from an Affiliated Park to a TT park.

When I asked why the website doesn’t say that, she said she was told that it was because the majority of TT memberships are now Zone Passes, and they don’t allow park-to-park.

Big surprise.

Just to double-check, I asked again, “So there are now more Zone Pass members than regular TT members”, and she said yes.

When I asked her why they didn’t clarify this difference in the FAQ file, she said she didn’t know, but she wished they would, since it’s the most asked question by callers.

3. No matter how far ahead you can book a park under your TT membership (for us, it’s 210 days), you can only book 60 days under your TC membership.

4. Finally, good luck actually booking a TC park, as there are only about 10 sites at each park reserved for TC members.

Our daughter Brandi called this afternoon to see if Nana could babysit Landon next week. The Houston Independent School District (HISD) announced today that school will not start back until Monday week, the 11th, so they need someone to watch Landon next Tuesday through Friday.

Talk about throwing Brer Rabbit in the Briar Patch.

So I will drop her off sometime Monday afternoon and pick her up probably Friday afternoon. And it looks like it will be just me and Karma next week.

No Young, Burly Guys . . .

After all the struggles of two old fat guys (my client and me) getting the new 88# A/C into the through-the-wall over our heads, we discovered we had a dud.

Like many new appliances, this AC had one of those built-in GFCI modules on the end of the power cord, and ours is bad. The Reset and Test buttons are loose, and the power light on the module is dead.

So the company is sending us a new one, which we should get sometime next week. But unfortunately, they’re not sending out two young, burly guys to remove the old one and install the new one.

We asked.

So we get a second shot at heart attack territory.

In Case You Missed Out The 1st Time Around. . .

Starting November 5th, you can now buy your own updated C-64.

The New C-64

• The games carousel has 64 pre-installed games, including classics such as California Games,        Paradroid, and Boulder Dash, with new additions (including VIC-20 games and more) available as a release-day online firmware update.
• Connect to a 720p TV or monitor via HDMI for a stunning HD experience.
• Save your progress at any time.
• Via USB, add your own games/programs, update the firmware, and connect your own devices.
• Functions like an original C64 or Vic 20 computer, or play any of the included 64 games in the games carousel.

And it’s only $129.99.

A really great deal since, when the original debuted in 1982, it cost $595.00, about $1600 in today’s dollars. But the price quickly dropped to the $200-300 range, or even less, and by the time it was discontinued in 1994, it had sold over 15 million units.

Microsoft Says Happy Birthday To Me . . .

Jan and I headed up to Webster about 1 pm with our first stop at the local Harbor Freight for a new pop-rivet tool for work. Some of the epilators I work on are plastic-riveted together, so to work on them I have to drill the rivets out and then rivet them back together when I’m done.

Then it was on up to The Cookshack for a rematch, or at least a shot at the two-levels hotter version of the AMF hot Chicken Tenders. But unfortunately, it was not to be, because though the owner had told me he had an AMF heat level hotter than what I had last time, he apparently hadn’t shared it with anyone there, since according to them, AMF was AMF, and there were no ‘levels’.

And the owner wasn’t there today. Bummer!

So Jan got the Shack Salad,

with Grilled Chicken, Avocado, Dates, Almonds, Goat Cheese, Cherry Tomatoes, Corn & Champagne Vinaigrette. But Jan got hers without dates or corn.

I just got the 5 Chicken Tenders, 4 Tenders at Texas Hot, and 1 at AMF. And this time I had to sign the Waiver for the AMF version.

According to the waiver, the AMF is a combination of Carolina Reaper, Trinidad Scorpion, and Ghost Peppers, with a Scoville rating of 2.8 million units.

I love some of the possible symptoms:

Temporary Loss of Hearing and Sight
Loss of the Ability to Speak
Cause You to Become Dizzy or Faint/Pass Out

Sounds like my kind of fun.

I got, as my side, their Texas Caviar, a mixture of black-eyed peas, corn, black beans, green peppers, and tomatoes. Very good.

FWIW, I don’t think that this AMF tender was as hot as my first one, but it could just be that my mouth is still numb from last time.

Finishing up lunch, we stopped off at the office to pick up a package, and then it was on over to Sam’s for a couple of things, and then home.

In apparent recognition of my upcoming birthday, Microsoft has announced that they will be releasing Windows 11 on October 5th. You can go to the link here to find out if your computer will be able to run it.

Glad We Did It Back Then . . .

I spent most of today at work writing a new instruction manual for the machines we’re importing from Poland. Well, not so much writing as translating. Though the supplied manuals are supposedly in English, it looks like it was done by running the Polish version through Google Translate. And for some reason, the topic headings are still in Polish.

So I’m using Google Translate to get the topic headings into English, and rewriting everything into conversational English, that doesn’t read like it was written by a robot. Then I’m putting it all together with new images to make a new manual for our customers.

I’m also going to send it to the Polish people to see if they want to use it for their other machines.

Saw this article the other day about problems with the water levels in European rivers this summer.

Low Water Levels Disrupt European River Cruises

It talks about how people on cruises are spending a lot of time this summer on buses because of low water levels. But on some level, this happens every year.

Twice, in fact.

Back in 2018, when we were booking our Grand European Viking Tour, running from Budapest to Amsterdam, we found the rates during the early spring and late fall were much cheaper. Figuring there had to be a catch, I did a little digging and found out why.

Turns out that in the spring, when the mountain snows melt and fill the rivers to overflowing, the levels are then too high for the cruise ships to get under the bridges. And this is such a regular thing that the ships are designed for this as much as possible.

Everything folds down, and the wheelhouse retracts until it is also flush with the deck. There’s even a ‘sunroof’ where the captain can pop his head up for a few seconds to get his bearings along the way.

But if the water level is still too high, passengers are bused around the high spots and spend their nights in hotels along the way.

Then every year in the fall, the river levels are much lower, too low sometimes for the ships to navigate, and then it’s back to the buses.

This is why we paid more and booked our cruise for the sweet spot, the first part of June, and had no problems.

But I’m glad we did our cruise when we did.

Today, the U.S.S. Texas, one of only a few Navy ships to serve in both world wars, was moved from its long-time docking near the San Jacinto Monument to a dry dock down in Galveston to have its leaking hull repaired.

At this time, it’s not known where it will be going when the repairs are finished, but apparently, it will not be coming back to its old dock at San Jacinto.

Tomorrow we’re doing a day trip down to Galveston ourselves. We’ll do lunch at our favorite brunch spot, Sunflower Cafe, and then spend some time driving around the island. Then, coming home, we’ll probably make a La Marque Sam’s Club stop for a few things that we didn’t find at the one on El Dorado yesterday.

And we might drive by and check out the U.S.S. Texas while we’re down there too.

It Just Keeps Getting Bigger . . .

Lunch today was at Torchy’s Tacos once again, with Jan getting her usual two Chicken Fajita Tacos,

while I got my fav two of their Republicans (They also have Democrats, if that’s your bent), which is a Jalapeno Cheese Sausage Link with all the fixin’s.

Delicious as always.

But we are looking forward to a Torchy’s competitor that will be opening right down the street in the near future. It’s called Velvet Taco, and it looks to take tacos to another level.

Tacos like Chicken & Waffles Tacos, Kobe Beef Tacos, Beer-Battered Cauliflower, and more. We can’t wait.

What keeps getting bigger is my ‘Waiting For Cooler Weather Project List.

First up, I need to add some more black mulch to the Flamingo Flamboyance. Between the sun-fading and the dropping oak leaves from the tree overhead, it needs some replenishment.

I also need to replace the toilet paper holder in our bathroom. Of course that one doesn’t need colder weather, so it’ll get done this weekend.

Last night and tonight showcased the latest Blue Moon. And in case you don’t know, there’s nothing ‘blue’ about it. It really just means the second full moon in a month. Apparently the ‘blue’ part refers to the rarity, not the color.

We had a nice example tonight here at the park. Unfortunately, there was enough haze in the air to make it hard to get a sharp photo, but it was impressive, anyway.

Recently-Reopened. . .

Lunch today was at the recently-reopened . . . again, Texas Huddle, our 2nd time during this present incarnation.

They were having their Grand Opening, or maybe Grand Re-opening, and it was great to see them really busy, unlike our last visit on a weekday, when they weren’t very busy at all.

Jan got the 3 Chicken Tender Plate with a Side Salad.

These are really big tenders. In fact, Jan even gave me 1/2 of one.

I also got the Side Salad and an order of 5 wings, all drums, with their Flaming Raspberry Sauce coating them.

All really delicious!

Then it was on over to Wal-Mart for our weekly WM Stuff.

A nice easy day.

Back on Wednesday, the 28th, SpaceX lost their first booster, after over 260 perfect landings.

They talked about a fire around the bottom as it landed, but I went back and looked at several other successful landings, and didn’t see much difference.

It really just looks like there was a problem with one of the landing struts collapsing.

Named B1092, the booster had already completed 23 missions without a problem, so maybe it just wore out.

But today they successfully launched and landed two Falcon 9’s carrying Starlink satellites. So it looks like they’re back on course.

Tomorrow we plan on lunch at Denny’s, and then our weekly HEB visit.

And even better, I don’t go back to work until Wednesday.

Very Nice!

Chief Dog Officer . . .

Lunch today went on as scheduled at Yummy Yummy, and then it was on up to HEB for our weekly HEB stuff. But by the time we came out, it was black as night with a thunderstorm moving in, so we decided to wait and get gas tomorrow and try to get home before the storm moved in.

And luckily, we made it just in time.

Royal Caribbean just launched this year’s largest cruise ship in the world, the Star of The Seas, as opposed to last year’s largest cruise ship in the world, the Icon of The Seas. And how much bigger is this year’s world’s largest cruise ship than last year’s world’s largest cruise ship?

It’s a whole 3″ longer.

And it comes with a flying DeLorean and a dog.

This is Sailor, the Star of the Seas Chief Dog Officer.

As far as the flying DeLorean, it’s featured in a full-scale Back to the Future musical.

What will they think of next?

Rut Roh!

Recently, the Livonia, MI police were chasing a stolen Chevy Cruze, and rather than try to stop the car using a PIT maneuver, which might damage the vehicle, they deployed The Grappler.

The system uses a spring-loaded net that is deployed from a patrol car’s front bumper. The net ensnares the rear wheel of a suspect vehicle and wraps around the axle. It is designed to quickly stop a fleeing vehicle in a manner that is intended to be both safer and more controlled than a PIT maneuver.

The Grappler was deployed from the Livonia patrol car, and it worked as designed. Unfortunately for the poor Chevrolet, the suspect thought he could still get away. At least, he did until the rear axle was ripped off the car.

The police were grateful that all three suspects were arrested without the need for a pursuit thanks to the Grappler device. The rightful owner of the Chevy Cruze might be a little less enthusiastic. We can just imagine how that phone call from the police will go. It might start with something like, “We have some good news, and we have some bad news.”

Seems like the owner might have preferred that the police just let it go, and hope they recover it later.

More Unintended Consequences:

Washington State decided that the clam population was declining, so they passed a bill to limit the number of clams you could take. Then, after several years, they noticed the problem was getting worse, and they couldn’t figure out why.

Then the lawmakers actually took the time to go to the beach, watch people dig up their limit but continue to look for bigger clams. When they found a bigger one, they would take one of the (now dead) clams out of their bucket, toss it on the beach, and put the new one into the bucket.

Ohio saw jobs leaving the State for less unionized southern states, so Governor Celeste signed a law that required businesses that closed their doors to deposit 6 months’ worth of wages with the state to cover unemployment and retraining costs. They were surprised to see that, several months later, no new businesses were formed in the state. To their credit, they revoked the law.

They almost never learn.

Originally, we had planned to stay home tomorrow, but now it looks like we’re doing BBQ at Spring Creek BBQ, and then a Wal-Mart stop, and gas.
