Not Bad. Not Bad At All . . .

Jan and I were on our way up to The Woodlands area to meet up with Ed & Debi Hurlburt for a return visit at Adriatic Cafe and Italian Grille. We liked it so much last month that we wanted a return visit.

And one of the great things about this place is that as soon as you sit down, they greet you with a big basket of their delicious hot garlic bread knots.

First up were nice salads with homemade Bleu Cheese dressing.

Then Jan and I moved on to their ‘Spaghetti The Works’, with meat sauce, sliced mushrooms, Italian sausage, and a meatball

This was Jan’s first time getting the Spaghetti, and she didn’t want the sausage, so I asked for it to be added to mine. So they brought me a large plate just filled with sausage, so when I dumped it on my plate, it looks like all I got was sausage.

But there is spaghetti, sauce, meatballs, etc., under there too.

Between the bread, and the salad, Jan and I both had a lot of leftovers to bring home. And wanting to stretch out our take-home, we asked for a separate order of spaghetti and sauce to go.

After our 2+ hour get-together, Jan and I were on our way home by about 2pm, getting back to the rig about 3:30.

A really nice day with great friends.

With this being my longest time sitting in one place for over an hour, I was a little leery on how I would feel. I had even primed Jan that she might have to drive home. But as it turned out, I didn’t have a problem.

I was expecting to be really stiff and sore when we got to the restaurant, but it wasn’t bad at all.

If you think I’m too sarcastic, you should hear what I don’t say.

More Photos From Our Time In Alaska

October 10, 2009

Brrrr !!!!

Today the rain is finally gone and the sun is out.

But it’s cold. And tonight it’s supposed to go down to freezing tonight.

Brrrrr !!!

Today was just a late lunch at our new favorite Mexican place, El Camino Real.

Jan had a combo plate and I had the Pork Chili Verde. Really hot, just like I like it.

After that, it was Walmart / Sam’s Club more ‘stuff’ time. Then it was back to the coach.

After putting stuff away, it seemed a good time for a nap.

Later for supper, we had Famous Dave’s BBQ leftovers.

Just another day in Paradise…

October 10, 2010

Back to Chili’s again. . .

As has been usual lately we started out the morning having coffee and just lazing around the coach, enjoying the great weather.

Brandi sent over this photo of Lowell getting some daddy time.

Landon and Lowell 5

Then about 4 pm we headed up to Webster to meet Brandi, Lowell, and Landon at Alpine Brauhaus, a German restaurant we always enjoyed, but it’s moved since the last time we ate there.

And apparently they changed their hours. They now close at 4 pm on Sunday.

Bummer!

We then decided to head across the parking lot to Chili’s, a chain we used to eat at 2 or 3 times a month, but then about 2 years they dropped our favorite dish, and now we haven’t been there in over a year.

Jan and I loved their Grilled Chicken Caribbean Salad with Honey-Lime Dressing, but after eating it for years, they suddenly discontinued it.

Bummer again!

So we were very happy to find that they brought it back, almost. It’s a little different. It’s now called just the Caribbean Salad, but you can get it with grilled chicken or grilled shrimp. They’ve also added Dried Cherries and dropped the Pico de Gallo.

But it’s still good, so we’ll be going back a lot more often now.

We also got some good Landon photos while we were there.

Here’s Landon sleeping peacefully.

Landon at Chilis 5

And here’s Jan annoying him with a frog.  Well, I guess he is smiling.

Landon at Chilis 2

BTW the red spot on his forehead is a birthmark, of a type that usually fades away in 18-24 months.

I left Chili’s before everyone else to do some work at a client’s office while Jan drove Brandi’s car back to the rig.

She’s picking up Brandi early to drive her to a doctor’s appointment, since I need the truck to visit another client tomorrow morning.

I got back to the rig about 8:30 and did some website work for a couple of clients.

Tomorrow will be another busy day.

With a Name like Smucker’s . . .

Today’s our last day at Smith’s Campground here in Loudonville and we’re really going to miss it. Amy and her family have really made us welcome.

After lunch at 11 that included some delicious pumpkin bread, Amy, Kim, and Scott Smith came by to get a tour of our rigs and chat for a while. Then about 12:45 Jan and I headed over to Kidron, OH.

Along the way we passed this really neat fall pumpkin patch, just the perfect accent for our trip through the Ohio countryside.

Pumpkin Patch

Our destination in the small town of Kidron was Lehman’s Hardware. Originally selling products used by the Amish, it has become known as THE source for non-electric appliances.

Lehmans Hardware 1

While originally over 90% of their business was Amish, now, since Lehman’s has become a tourist spot,  it’s less than 10%.

Lehmans Hardware 2

And recently another source of business has been supplying props for movies such as World of the Worlds, and two of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.

One interesting thing was how expensive old-looking new stuff can be. A stove like this gas model, a modern stove dressed up in an old cabinet is over $7000.00.

Old Stove

Lehmans Hardware 3

They even have a whole room with nothing but different types of oil lamps and fuel.

Lehmans Hardware 4

After about an hour wandering up and down every aisle, we headed up the road about 8 miles to Orrville, OH and the Smucker’s store and factory.

Smuckers Store 1

Unfortunately, they don’t have a factory tour of any type, but they do have a neat store.

Smuckers Store 2

I had assumed that Smucker’s was owned by some other big corporation, but I was surprised to learn that Smucker’s is a really big corporation that owns a lot of other companies.

Companies like the following: JIF, Pillsbury, Martha White Flour, White Lily Flour, Robin Hood Flour, Crisco, Knott’s Berry Farm, Borden, Carnation, Hungry Jack, and Dunkin’ Donuts Coffee (but not the coffee shops), are just some of their brands.

Leaving Smucker’s we headed back toward home, but stopped off at Jake’s Steakhouse for dinner.

Jakes2

It was recommended by a lady at the Smucker’s store and we thought we would give it a try.

And it turned out to be really good. Jan had the Sirloin steak, and I had the Soup and Salad Bar. All really good. And we were very well taken care of by our waitress, Mouse.

And yes, Mouse is her real name. When we asked, she said when she was born, she just squeaked instead of crying, and her doctor called her a little mouse. So, her parents, both hippies, decided to name her Mouse.

And showing the fruit doesn’t fall far from the tree, Mouse named her daughter, Ocean, apparently because Mouse’s husband was a surfer, and Mouse herself, used to be a Shrimp Boat Captain in Tarpon Springs, FL.

You learn the strangest things talking to your waitress.

Tomorrow we head out for Elkhart.

October 10, 2013

Not Much . . .

has been happening on the gate the last few days. It’s been really quiet. We’re only getting about 50-60 vehicles a day through here, and the weather’s been very nice too.

Our days are pretty much in the high 80’s / low 90’s and hopefully will stay there for a while. And while we have had nights down into the high 40’s, recently they’ve been in the 60’s which is nice.

On the Landon front, he’s started playing soccer and Brandi and Lowell just got his first scouting report.

Landon's Soccer Report

Seems like they’re pretty proud.

Also, Landon got his haircut the other day and has now decided he’s too big to sit in the Firetruck chair and now wants to sit in the ‘big boy’ chair.

Landon's Haircut

That’s about it for now from the suburbs of beautiful Whitsett, TX.

October 10, 2014

Twenty Questions . . .

We were busy today, but not quite yesterday busy. We only had 166 vs. yesterday’s 199 vehicles coming in, so not too bad. But of course, a good percentage go back out too, so it does keep you on your feet a lot.

After getting a lot of confusing info from everyone about what’s what on all our pad sites, I took some time this afternoon to drive around back there to see for myself.

For some reason, they keep adding names to sites, and changing names too. I found we have 6 different pad sites with 10 different names, apparently depending on who’s working the site at that time. Seems like sometimes they just make up their own names for a site, but forget to tell us.

The rig across from us has had 4 different names since we’ve been here. The rig name/number has stayed the same, but the pad name keeps changing. I think this is because each new drill hole has a different name, but this wasn’t the way they did it the last time we worked a drill rig. Before it was always the pad name plus 1H, 2H, etc., i.e. Mercury #1H, or Mercury #3H.

I came back out and drew up a map to help Jan and I keep things straight, as a lot of these trucks come with very vague directions to where they’re supposed to go. And with some, it’s kind of a game of Twenty Questions, apparently to see if I can guess where they need to go.

So after getting their name, company, and tag number, it goes like this.

Me: “OK, Bobby, where are you going this morning?”

Bobby: “Ahhhhhh, let’s see.”  Now he starts pawing through his papers like it’s just occurred to him that he needs to know this.

Bobby: “Ahhh, Mid-Texas?” Note the question mark.

Me: “Nope, try again.”

After 10 or 15 seconds of noisy paper pawing, I finally suggest, “How about MD TEXAS?”

Bobby: “Yeah, that’s it.”

OK, we’ve narrowed it down to one of 6 pads

Me: “OK, Bobby, you got anything else for me?”

Bobby: “Ahhhhh, Still-Water?”

Me: “OK, we’ve got it down to 4 sites now. What else ya got?”

More loud paper fumbling,

Bobby: “They’re fracking?”

OK, now we’re down to 2 sites.

Me: You got a company name?”

Bobby: “Go Frac?”

Bingo. We have a winner.

And if he’d just pulled in and said, “I got sand for Go Frac.” he’d have been on his way 5 minutes ago.

I’m sure most of you have heard of Amazon Prime, with free Two Day Shipping. And of course, for a little bit more, you can get it tomorrow.

And in some areas they’re even doing Same Day Delivery. But now they’ve taken the next step.

Believe me, I can’t wait. There’s been some times I could have really used this.

Dang Lazy Mule . . .

Or Our Budding Bandido.

I could get used to this. Yesterday and the day before, we had 72 vehicles coming in the gate. Today we had 55. And with the temp finally making it to 83° with sunny skies, it was just about perfect.
We were told yesterday that all the cleanup and completion work here should take about two months. So if that holds true, and it may not, then that would mean we would be here until we’re ready to leave on the 22nd of November.

We hope.

We’ve also heard that when things get going here, they might be working a 12 hour day.

We hope.

But then when I asked one of the company men this afternoon if they would be taking the day off on the Monday Columbus Day holiday, he laughed and said, “Hell, we’re lucky we get Thanksgiving and Christmas off.”

So I’m not putting a big bet on a 12 hour day.

This is probably the best gate we’ve had. Close to town, good cell/Internet service, nice surroundings, friendly owner, and not an over-abundance of traffic. Wish they were all like this.

I mentioned recently about my WordPress login page now requiring me to ‘Prove my Humanity’ by adding two numbers together and then entering the total on the screen along with my login name and password. I figured this was to cut down on automated scripts trying to hack your password and get into the site.

Why I don’t know. Of course there’s no credit card data or anything like that. I guess they could do some sort of malware injection through one of the blog posts, but Godaddy monitors that kind of thing pretty closely. And if they did manage to hack into the site, I could immediately regain control by calling Godaddy and giving them my secret password.

But it’s highly unlikely that they could guess my password anyway, as it’s 10 characters of gobbledygook, letters, numbers, upper case, lower case, and symbols. So good luck with that.

But with all that, it’s not slowing down hacking attempts either. I mean you’re talking about an automated script, written to hack into WordPress sites. So how hard is to program your script to add the two numbers together and type it in the little box along with your name and password attempt?

It’s a computer. It can add two numbers. That’s what computers do. Compute.

And you can see from a few days ago, how well it’s working.

Failed Logins

The attempts started a couple of minutes after 9am and continued until a little after 10:30.

Each one of these attempts means three failed logins, and then that IP address is locked out for 4 hours. Here are the lockout settings I’m using.

Failed Logins Settings

Then after a second 4 hour lockout, that IP address is locked out for 48 hours. So these attempts are coming from a lot of different IP addresses, and mostly from Eastern Europe. Go figure.

Landon, Lowell, and Brandi went down to Friendswood to visit Chris, Linda, and Miss Piper today, and Landon, our budding Bandido, got what I imagine was his first motorcycle ride from his Uncle Chris.

Bandido Landon 1

And of course, every biker needs his blue dragon along for support.

Bandido Landon 2

Bandido Landon 3

Looks like he really enjoyed it too.

I guess anticipating the possibility of a 12 hour shift, I now have a 12 hour Mule. Or maybe it’s just lazy. But whatever the problem, the second Mighty Mule Driveway Alarm system I installed to catch vehicles leaving the pad, just won’t work at night.

It works fine in the daytime, especially now that I moved it closer the other day, but sometime during the night, it just quits.

It’s hard to tell exactly when it quits, because we don’t get a lot of traffic at night. But at some point I just notice it’s not working. But the other one coming in to us just keeps chugging alone.

Tomorrow I’m going to try moving it closer again to see if that helps. Otherwise, I’ll try swapping the transmitters. If nothing works, I’ll call the company.

Dang Mule.

On a final note, I had a number of blog readers, including Jan, wondering about the ‘Jewish vampire’ reference in yesterday’s blog.

I seem to remember it from one of those comedy vampire movies back in the late 70’s – early 80’s. In my mind I see Richard Benjamin confronting a vampire, and triumphantly holding out a cross to ward the vampire off. The vampire laughs, calls him a ‘putz’ in a Jewish accent, and begins to hit him with the cross. Benjamin, realizes his mistake, and starts frantically reaching in his shirt, before finally pulling out a ‘Star of David’ just in time to save the damsel in distress.

Lemon Grass and Dragon Sauce . . .

This morning I started checking out other gate guard companies to see about getting another gate, hopefully before we have to move over to the Colorado River Thousand Trails this Thursday

I also filled out and printed out our absentee ballot forms so we can send them off tomorrow.

About 2pm Jan and I headed out for lunch and some shopping, with our first stop at Asian BBQ and Grill in Conroe. As seems to happen when we go to our favorite places, we generally get our favorite dishes. And this afternoon was no different.

We started out with a couple of their Shrimp Spring Rolls, with the Spicy Hot Peanut Sauce

Asian BBQ Spring Rolls

They put a big dab of Chili Sauce into the Peanut Sauce and then top it with freshly crushed peanuts. Really Good!

Jan got her Lemon Grass Chicken Bowl with rice noodles, bean sprouts, carrots, and cucumbers,

Asian BBQ Lemon Grass Chicken 2

while I got the Grilled Pork Bowl with a Shrimp Skewer,

Asian BBQ Lemon Grass Chicken

which has the same veggies as Jan’s dish.

And of course, you can’t eat at Asian BBQ without getting a big bowl of their Dragon Sauce.

Asian BBQ Dragon Sauce

While we were there I talked to the owner about doing a website for him. We had talked before we went on the gate, so I wanted to follow up with him again. And this time I mocked up a sample page for him, using some of the photos I’ve taken for the blog over past visits.

AsianBBQMockup4

I think it looks pretty good for about 30 minutes work. I’m going to check back in with him on Wednesday.

He’s interested in me setting up an online takeout ordering system for him. It’s not something I’ve done before, but of course I told him it wouldn’t be a problem. Not the first time I’ve promised something I haven’t done before.

So far I’ve always come through.

Next up was a quick stop by Sam’s Club to get a new battery for the truck. The old one is about 5 years old, and it’s starting to fade. I’ll put it in tomorrow and then take the old one back to get my $18 core charge back.

Last, was a groceries stop at the Super Kroger’s over in Willis, as well as a Cinnamon Dolce Latte from their Starbucks for on the way home.

Tomorrow I’ll start actually making calls to gate guard companies, specifically Guard 1 and SiteWatch, both of whom offered us gates after Jamie of Gate Guard Services called us with our Blue Moon Gate.

Wrapping up, both of my recent repairs seem to be holding. The water pump repair on our Splendide Washer/Dryer combo is still working with no problems, and hopefully will continue that way.

And although we’ve only used it a few times since I remounted the control panel, our microwave is also still working. But I’m not sure we’ve given it a long enough test yet. We did make two bags of popcorn last night, which required two 3.5 minute cooking periods. In the past we might have seen a problem with the second one. So we’ll just have to wait and see.

The King Is Dead . . .

Long Live The King.

It was nice to sleep in and not have to travel down to Clear Lake, but then there’s tomorrow.

The weather really cooled off today, with a high of  77 and going down to 56 tonight. And 79/59 tomorrow. Very Nice.

I was reading an article this morning about a new hot pepper, hotter even than the fabled Carolina Reaper.

It’s called Dragon’s Breath, and it was developed by a guy in England not to eat, but to be used as a topical anesthetic for people who are allergic to regular anesthetics.

Dragon's Breathe Pepper

And at almost 2.5 million Scoville units, it’s almost a million units more than the Carolina Reaper.

Once the Ghost Pepper became the first pepper to cross the 1 million unit line, the newer peppers, i.e. 7 Pot, the Scorpions, the Reaper, etc., all crept up a couple of hundred thousand units at a time.

Until the Dragon’s Breath, that is.

But before I could even finish researching the new king, the Dragon’s Breath, a new hotter king came along, the Pepper X.

Pepper X

And the old king was deposed with another large jump, all the way up to almost 3.25 million Scoville units.

These peppers are in a range that they can kill people, and have. Ruptured esophagi, anaphylactic shock, suffocation, etc. But if you want to try some of these peppers, at your own risk, of course, check out the The iBurn Store here in Houston

Although I’ve got some Trinidad Moruga Scorpion pepper flakes, recently the 3rd hottest, and just used them the other day at the Asian BBQ & Grill, I’ve never tried the Carolina Reaper, and I probably won’t. And that goes for the Dragon’s Breath and Pepper X as well.

A man’s got to know his limitations.

Pelicans and Dolphins and Cranes, Oh My. . .

For everyone who has emailed their concern about our proximity to Hurricane Michael, we’re fine. In fact, except for some overcast skies, rain sprinkles, and brisk winds, we’ve seen no sign of Michael.

Of course, the same can not be said for the people a couple of hundred miles to our west. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone in the storm’s path.

First to catch up on last night’s visit to the Dixie Crossroad’s restaurant in Titusville, a long-time favorite of ours since the 80’s. We had been disappointed to hear that since the place had changed hands a while back, the quality had gone down, even to the point of no longer serving the free basket of corn fritters that came with the meal.

So we were very happy to see a basket of them on our table.

Dixie Crossroads Corn Fritters

And the food, and the service, pretty much held up for the rest of the meal. Jan had a salad,

Dixie Crossroads Salad

and the Fried Mullet with Garlic Butter Steamed Veggies.

One thing funny is that Dixie Crossroad’s is known for their Mullet. And when I was growing up in south Alabama, mullet was the go-to fish for any fish fry. Though they won’t normally bite a hook, they’re pretty easy to catch a lot pretty quickly with a cast net.

But when we moved out to Texas in late 1978 and tried to order mullet, we found that they considered it a trash fish, good only cutting up as bait. Different strokes, I guess.

But they’re missing out on some good eatin’.

Dixie Crossroads Mullet

As for me, I started off with a cup of Clam Chowder,

Dixie Crossroads Clam Chowder

and the Shrimp & Oysters with Cheese Grits.

Dixie Crossroads Shrimp and Oyster and Chesse Grits

I made the mistake of giving Jan a taste of my chowder and almost didn’t get my spoon back. She said that’s what she’s getting next time.

Everything was really good, so maybe they’re back on track, but the prices were a good bit higher than we just paid for similar meals in Gulf Shores and Breaux Bridge.

But still good.

Now to today.

About 11am Jan and I headed into Titusville and the WalMart there to try and get our South Dakota Driver’s License Renewal / Vision Statement / New Glasses problem straightened out once and for all.

We fell behind the power curve when our long-time mailbox service, My Dakota Address, shut down without notice around the end of July. After having started refusing everyone’s mail a week or so earlier.

So with all their ex-customers scrambling to get a new South Dakota address, the remaining services were overwhelmed, which put us into the middle of September to get a new address.

Then I could start putting in the paperwork to renew my South Dakota Driver License. Part of the Renewal By Mail is to have your eyes checked by an Optometrist for the vision part of the renewal, who then fills out an SD DMV form that I submitted to SD with my renewal papers.

But apparently the optometrist checked off something that SD didn’t like, so it all started back over again. Then my new glasses, promised to come in before we left for Florida, didn’t . And neither did Jan’s.

However, they did come in Wednesday after we left, and we got the call while we were sitting in Crazy Bout Crawfish in Breaux Bridge, LA having dinner after the first travel day of our trip.

Luckily I was able to have my client’s office manager pick them up that afternoon and get them in the mail to us the next day. I had her send them to a friend’s address here in Florida since we would be on the road.

So now, after calls between South Dakota, Webster, TX, and the Walmart here, we may have it straightened out. But I’m not holding my breath.

I guess I’ll know more tomorrow when I talk to SD again.

A little later we took a nature tour of the area. I say, nature tour, because we saw Manatees,

Nick Manatees 1

Pelicans,

Nick Pelicans 1

Nick Pelicans 2

and Dolphins riding the bow wave of a passing boat.

Nick Boat Porpoise

And if that wasn’t enough, how about a quartet of Sandhill Cranes just strolling through the neighborhood?

Nick Sandhill Cranes

Jan was giddy.

Later, after a drive up to New Smyrna Beach and a drive back down out on said beach, we ended up at Dustin’s BBQ in Edgewater.

If you didn’t know better, when you walk in, you would think you’re in a Sonny’s BBQ. The layout is similar, as is the menu. And that’s because the owner used to work for Sonny’s, and then went out and started his own chain with six locations in Florida.

Jan had the Endless Salad Bar and a BBQ Grilled Chicken Breast, while I had the house special, Baby Back Ribs with Cajun Garlic Shrimp, Fried Okra, and Cheese Grits.

Nick Dustin's BBQ

All really good, and hopefully we’ll get to go back before we leave.

Dustin done did Sonny proud.

And tomorrow we’ll do it all over again.

More Oil Filter Info . . .

Today was a nice stay-at-home day. In fact the only time I  left the rig was to walk the garbage down to the dumpster.

The only thing new was that I did raise the bed to take a look at my oil filter mount from up above. I ty-wrapped my phone to a long dowel rod and stuck it down by the filter to try and get a look at the filter adapter base.

And although it’s kind of hard to see under the crud, it sure looks like there’s a separation seam between the two parts.

Oil Filter from Side 1

Tomorrow night we’re attending the Alvin Opry up in, where else, Alvin. We’ll probably have dinner at our usual Monterey’s for a bowl of their great Chicken Tortilla Soup.

Also meeting up with our friend, Maria Sutton. Really looking forward to it.

Easy! Or Too Easy?

We’re coming into Jan’s favorite time of the year – HalloThanksMas.

So Jan has Halloween shirts, Thanksgiving shirts, and Christmas shirts. But now she’s got one ordered that covers all of her holidays, plus one of her favorite animals.

HalloThanksMas TShirt

But she’s also got this one coming that’s a little more definitive.

Amazon Halloween Shirt

I was outside and under the rig about 1pm, and for a change everything went quickly. Since I cut 6” off my drill extension I had no problem manipulating the drill and bit into position. I was a little concerned about how to keep the bit lined up with the old hole, but it seemed to align itself with no problems. I did wear my safety goggles since aluminum bits were raining down, but I was lying off to the side anyway.

It only took about 10 minutes to drill all four holes, but I did notice that the two that were already stripped out drilled out much easier.

Then I started tapping the new threads in, using the 12” tap handle extension that I also got for this job. And I was very happy that I had gotten one with build-in ratcheting. Made it a lot easier both cutting in and backing out. I just kept turning it until it bottomed out and stopped. I did spray both the hole and the tap with cutting oil.

So was it Easy? Or too easy? With all the trouble I’ve had getting to this point, it’s kind of worrisome that this part ended up being so easy.

I would have continued on by screwing in the Helicoils, the next step, but I noticed that I had little pieces of aluminum flashing sticking out around each hole left over from the tapping. So, before I installed the Helicoils, I wanted to chamfer, or bevel, down the lip of the hole.

But I didn’t have a polishing stone to do that, so I called it an afternoon. So after getting cleaned up, Jan and I were off to have a late lunch at our local favorite, Los Ramirez Mexican Restaurant.

As we got parked I noticed this Art Car in the parking lot, a really neat paint job.

Los Ramirez Art Car

Nice!

Jan got her usual Pechuga Rellena, a grilled chicken breast on top of a bed of grilled shrimp and broccoli, with half an avocado.

Los Ramirez Pechuga 1-05-20

And I got my fav, the Beef Fajita Taco Salad. Now it starts out like this.

Los Ramirez Beef Fajita Taco Salad 5

But wait, there’s more!

Jan doesn’t care for the lettuce/tomato garnish that comes on her dish, so she gives it to me, and then I top it all off with a big dollop of their Green Sauce, ending up like this.

Los Ramirez Beef Fajita Taco Salad 5a

And of course, a heavy sprinkling of my Carolina Reaper pepper flakes.

Delicious!

Finishing up I went right across the street to the O’Reilly’s Auto Parts to get a chamfer stone for tomorrow’s work session. I only wanted one, but I ended with a set of 10,  which was all they had. But it was only $7.99, so not too bad.

Mounted Stone Set

I’ll use the big one on the middle left.

Coming home we made a quick pass by the Santa Fe P.O. to see if our South Dakota Absentee Ballots had shown up yet.

We’re still waiting.

Wings Over Houston Recap . . .

Jan and I headed up to Ellington Field and Wings Over Houston Airshow about 10:30, and by 11:30 we were in our parking spot in Prime View parking. Unfortunately even though the gates only opened at 10 and the flying didn’t start until 1pm, our Prime View parking spot was a lot further away from the gate than I had hoped.

But we finally made it to our assigned seats in the Prime View area. And unlike a lot of attendees who brought their own snacks,

WOH Snacks

we just decided to graze at the many vendor’s booths.  Though I did glaze longingly at the Shipley Donuts box.

In fact, a little bit later Jan headed over to pick up some lunch for us, and also visit the Porta-Potties while she was out and about, coming back with a large hot dog for her and a large sausage dog for me, as well as chips for both of us.

The first plane we saw was a C-5M transport, not part of the airshow, but to do a training mission out over the Gulf.

WOH C-5M

Next up was the Tora, Tora, Tora display, depicting the bombing at Pearl Harbor. Unfortunately I didn’t get any photos of it since it was my turn for a food run, as well as it was my turn for the potty run.

So I was standing in what seemed to be the longest line at the food area, the one for funnel cakes when the Tora thing started up, about 15 minutes early according to the schedule. So I missed it.

But it looked like this,

Wings Over Houston Tora Tora Tora

And even from about 300 yards away you could feel the heat.

When I finally got close enough to actually see the food booth, I found that the funnel cakes were $15.00. Yikes!

But with all that time spent waiting in line, I went for it anyway.

Probably what they had in mind.

But I did get to see some flames from the depiction of the Doolittle Raid on Japan in April 1942, our reply to Pearl Harbor.

Though the real attack was with 16 B-25 Mitchell bombers, the show was with a little bit of everything, including a B-17.

WOH B-17

Next up was the CF Snowbirds, Canada’s military demonstration team.

The F-22 Raptor was the next in the air, showing off some fantastic moves.

WOH F-22 1

I think the most amazing one was where the F-22 came by level, pulled a tight climb straight up to about 10,000 ft., and then just hung there, stationary in midair, supported only by its engine thrust.

And then throttling back, it dropped down backward, staying perfectly vertical, to about 5000 ft., where it nosed over level and accelerated out of sight.

Wow!

WOH F-22 2

That’s about it for tonight. I’ll finish up the rest tomorrow.

Creeping Up On Us?

I had two more hints about Verizon’s 5G service in our area. This morning at work up in Webster I noticed 5G on my phone and when I tested it I got 195 Mbps. And as before, 5G almost immediately disappeared.

Then coming home this afternoon, while I was at the stoplight at FM646 and FM1764, I again noticed 5G. And when I tested again I got 116 Mbps. Again it disappeared.

But on a hunch I tested it at 4G and got 56 Mbps, much faster than before.

So maybe 5G is slower creeping up on us. It’s about time.

A few days ago I ordered a set of these Suction Cup Shower Handles.

Shower Handles

We’ve got a set of these in our rig shower, and they’re a big help. So I wanted to get a ‘travel’ set for our upcoming trips. Though we request a Handicap Accessible Shower when we travel, some of these leave a lot to be desired.

On our Alabama trip this past June, at one hotel, their ‘Handicap Assessable Shower’ was one of those roll-in models, very nice, but not a handhold in sight.

No towel/washcloth bar, no soap dish, no nothing.

These handles stick like crazy to any smooth surface and are sized to fit in those standard 4” ceramic shower tiles. But just pop up the handles and pull up on the little tab on the suction cup and they come right off.

Tomorrow’s going to be Torchy’s Tacos for lunch, and then who knows?

16 Psyche . . .

Apparently, so as not to overshadow my recent birthday, SpaceX postponed the upcoming Falcon Heavy – 16 Psyche launch from Oct. 5 to this Thursday, Oct. 12 at 9:16 am CDT.

After traveling an estimated 2.2 billion miles (3.5 billion kilometers), the spacecraft will arrive at the asteroid 16 Psyche, which is located at the far edge of the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, in 2029.

Once the spacecraft is in place, mission scientists will study the metal asteroid, which is different from the rock- and ice-dominated bodies studied in situ in the past, to learn more about how the rocky planets of the solar system (Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars) formed.

Discovered in 1852, Psyche is considered one of the most fascinating objects in the main asteroid belt, and scientists have only been able to study it at a distance. Scientists think the asteroid is composed of the exposed core of a planetesimal, a small body that formed during planet formation as gas and dust around a star collapsed in dense patches.

The Falcon Heavy vehicle features the twin boosters strapped to the side of a standard Falcon launch vehicle allowing for heavier payloads into more extreme orbits.

My favorite part of a Falcon Heavy launch is getting to see the two boosters come back and land at the Cape. It’s not possible with every Falcon Heavy launch, but it will be for this one.

Looking forward to it, even if I will have to get up early.

Thursday will also be our monthly Alvin Opry Group get-together, though it’s been moved from T-Bone Tom’s to Texas Roadhouse.

Looking forward to seeing everyone again.

Also, everything still looks to be a Go for the Wings Over Houston AirShow this Saturday, with a high of 80°, no clouds, and a 0% chance of rain.

Yay!

Back At Work . . .

My first day back at work in almost a month went pretty well. I did have to get up and walk around every 30 minutes or so, just to keep from stiffening up. But no real problems.

As I said before, I’ll just be going in one day a week for a few weeks to see how it goes. And after next Wednesday’s work day, I have my first Physical Therapy session.

One Day At A Time, I guess.

I did want to give a shout-out to this Lithium Battery Jump Starter we bought a few years ago. I’ve used it several times since we got it and it’s always started the vehicle right up.

About the size of a large paperback book, you wouldn’t think it would have that much power compared to

AC-Powered Chargers/Starters, but it does. And it’s really easy to use.

Just plug in the cable module to the battery pack, hook up the cables, and then turn the unit on.

If you have a Green light, you’re good to go. Just start the engine.

If you don’t have a Green light, press and hold the Boost button until you do.

Then just start the vehicle.

That’s it.

And it’s capable to doing 20-30 starts before it needs to be recharged.

Check it out.

Tomorrow we’re making a trip up to The Woodlands area to meet up with Ed & Debi Hurlburt once again. My first longish trip since my surgery, so we’ll see.

Looking forward to it.

Thought For The Day:

Some days I really think I need to be reminded, “Just Don’t Kill Anybody Today.”

And some days more than others.

Scenes From Our Trip Up To Alaska

October 9, 2009

Grand Lake…

Going back to Celina, OH for a few minutes…

We saw some neat old houses there too, since Celina has been around since 1834.

This one was on our route into town from the fairgrounds.

CelinaHouse 1

I thought the decorations/lightning rods/whatever on the roof peaks were really neat too.

CelinaHouse 2

Celina’s other claim to fame is Grand Lake. And Grand Lake has the distinction of being the largest hand-dug lake in the US.

It’s 8 miles long and 3 miles wide and covers 13,500 acres. Although it has 52 miles of shoreline, it is only 5-7 feet deep.

It was dug between 1837 and 1845 as a feeder reservoir for the Miami and Erie Canal. The Canal lasted until the 1870’s when the railroads took over.

Then the lake became important again in the 1890’s when oil was discovered under the lake and it became dotted with oil derricks.

Now it’s primarily used for fishing, boating and swimming.

Here’s a shot taken in the winter.

Anyway, back to the present.

Today we tried a new Chinese Buffet place called North China Buffet.  Unlike the other one we ate at earlier this week, this one is better, and much closer.

After getting back to the rig, we continued to go through stuff and organize things.

Then later in the afternoon, the mechanics I had contacted came over to talk about putting new shocks on the coach. After talking they may do some other work for us, and I may do a website for them.

About 6pm we decided to have dinner at Callahan’s, a family-style restaurant right down the street. Very good food and some great leftovers.

Then it was home for the night.

IHOP and Good Friends. . .

We left the rig a little before 11 am to meet our friends Bob and Maria Sutton at the IHOP up the road in Kemah for breakfast. We’ve known them since the mid-80’s and always get together whenever we can.

After spending a good while talking over breakfast we went over to their house to work on Maria’s computer. She was having trouble figuring out where the files from some CD’s she had ripped, had ended up. It took a little investigating, but I finally figured it out.

Jan had been nursing a headache all morning so we headed home about 3 pm so Jan could take some pills and get a nap.

And I decided a nap sounded like a good idea, so Mister and I took one too. He really likes to curl up beside me on the bed, but sometimes he won’t settle down. Today he was fine, however.

Then about 5:30 we drove over to Monterey’s Little Mexico for a bowl of their great Chicken Tortilla Soup and Fajita Beef and Bean Nachos. And as usual, it was great.

We got back to the rig about 6:30 pm and that was pretty much it for the day.

Just another nice restful day in Texas.

A 3 Hour Tour . . .

Today was nice and restful for us. Both Jan and I slept in this morning, enjoying the cool overnight weather and the hot coffee after we finally got up.

Then Jan and I, along with Mister, spent the rest of the afternoon sitting in our chairs out in front of the coach.

Mister on the River

We had been invited to go to dinner with Amy and her family, so we all headed out about 6:15 to nearby Danville and The Hangout, a local bar & grille.

They were really busy, and it took a while to get our food, but it was well worth the wait. And besides, we were having so much fun talking we hardly noticed.

And we were a large group, consisting of Amy Smith, and her husband George, their daughter Kim and her husband Scott Smith. So yes, I guess Kim’s married name is Kim Smith Smith.

Also with us were Kim and Scott’s daughters, Madison, 8, and Marissa, 2. Kim homeschools Madison and Marissa, and it really shows. Both girls are very well-behaved, and it was a pleasure to have them with us. We had a table of 10, but our waitress did a great job taking care of us.

And the food was delicious. Here’s a photo of my Double Bacon Cheeseburger. It’s 4 inches high and so big I didn’t even try to pick it up, I just ate it with a fork, and it was gooooddd!

Hangout Burger

Jan had the Big New Yorker, a Rueben with Cole slaw on it. We also split an order of Hot Wings that were really good, but in Texas at least, they would be laughed at for calling them hot. Mildly warm might be a better description, but they were very good anyway.

We really appreciate the great hospitality that Amy and her family have shown us. They’ve really made us feel at home. Thanks, Amy.

On another note, Lowell sent along this latest photo of Landon with that mischievous look on his face.

Chinese and Carryout . . .

After our fairly long travel day yesterday, everybody decided today would be an official goof-off day, so not much happened.

After we got back from supper last night I spent a couple of hours making up a new longer cable to connect up our Winegard Carryout Satellite Antenna.

Winegard Carryout

Normally I use a 15 foot cable because it’s easier to handle, and before now I didn’t need anything longer.

But where we’re parked here in the Harbor View Outdoor World resort, the only sightline I have through the trees is located about 30 feet away so I had to make up a longer cable. This one is 75 feet long, which is how much cable I had left on the spool, but I’ll only use it when I have to.

We headed out for dinner about 4pm, a little early because we wanted to drive around the area a little more before we ate. Everyone was “jones’n” for Chinese so we headed over to Hunan Chinese Restaurant in Colonial Beach. The online reviews were good and so was the meal. Jan and I tend to rate Chinese restaurants by their Hot & Sour Soup, and Hunan’s was really good. Not as good as King Food in Webster, TX, but pretty good.

Spud (Meeting) and Steak too . . .

Today was grocery shopping day in Bryan/College Station so I left the gate about 10:15 and headed over to the WalMart. Besides the usual supplies, I was looking for a couple of other things, one being a new basin wrench.

I need to replace our bathroom lavatory faucet, and for that I need a basin wrench. But due to the ‘reorganization’ I did on the bins this past spring before we left Houston, I can’t find mine now. So it’s just easier to buy a new one rather than continue to hunt for the old one. But of course, as soon as I get the new one, I’ll find the old one.

One can never have too many basin wrenches, right?

I also wanted to take a look at their cold weather stuff for when winter sets in here on the Gate. One thing I want to get is a watch cap, you know, one of those pullover knit things, to keep my bald head warm. One of these baseball caps, even with a hoodie on a sweatshirt, doesn’t really cut it.

And I wanted to see what they had in the way of thermal underwear. Last year down in South Texas on our gate I liked to have froze at night those last couple of weeks in November. It was in the 30’s every night, and the last week it sleeted every night too.

But then walking over to the Men’s department, I came across this and thought it would be perfect for evening gate-wear. And it looks really warm too.

Bunny Suit

I wonder if it comes in ‘Extra Fluffy’.

On grocery day I always bring home lunch for Jan and I, so I started by picking up our drinks at the McDonald’s in the store, two Iced Caramel Mocha’s, and pies for dessert. Then it was across the parking lot for Chili Cheese Coney’s and Ched’R Poppers from the Sonic Drive-In, one of our favorites.

Getting back to the Gate about 1pm, I found Jan had been pretty busy because of the Spud Meeting that was being held at the rig across from us. As many as 50 can show up, so it makes for a big uptick in traffic, In this case, we had 199 vehicles in today, compared to yesterday’s 175.

As I mentioned before, ‘Spudding’ or ‘Spud In’, refers to the moment the drill bit first hits the dirt and starts drilling, in this case, on the new hole they just skidded the rig over to the other day.

But unlike the previous meetings, this one was catered, and a company guy dropped off a nice steak dinner for us. So we’re all set for tomorrow night’s dinner.

And hopefully with the fracks starting up we’ll see more catered meals as well, since that seems to be the norm with the fracking companies.

We’re looking forward to it.

No Double Dipping . . .

Today being Friday, it was Wal-Mart and lunch day, so I headed out about 11:30. Just as I was ready to leave, Todd, our GGS service guy, showed up to top us off with diesel, and change the oil. He had just finished setting up the new gate guards at the frack site right up the road, so on my way out I stopped by to introduce myself and see if they needed anything from town.

Turn out to be two ladies in a small camper at the new gate. One of them had already gone into Carthage so they were OK. While I was there I got the GPS co-ords so we can give them to the lost trucks that show up at our gate.

Today was a chicken day, so I stopped off at the Chicken Express to pick up lunch. And as I was waiting for my food, I wondered about something.

Why don’t they offer a Combo meal?

This place has great chicken, great catfish fillets, and great sides (Love their Fried Okra). And as far as the chicken goes, they’ve got Chicken Tenders (What Jan likes), Fried Chicken, Chicken Livers, and Chicken Gizzards.

From a marketing standpoint though, why don’t they offer a meal with two Chicken Tenders, one Catfish Fillet, and a side? Nothing else to change, just space on the menu. But when I ask the cashier about it, she just looked at me like I was crazy to want both chicken and fish in the same little yellow box together, and said very emphatically, “We don’t do that.”

Well, Geez, it wasn’t like I wanted them to interbreed or something.

I was just wondering. But then that sometimes gets me in trouble.

So after my abortive attempt last week to purchase a Ready, Camp, Go card to augment our Thousand Trail parks during our East Coast trip next year, my next thought was to get a Northeast Zone pass. The regular price was $645, but until Oct. 9th it was $100 off, at $545. This was almost twice as much as the Platinum level RCG  card at $299, but it would still be worth it.

And if you bought the Zone pass for two years, you could get payments. Since you’re allowed to change zones one time, I could use the Pass in the Northeast next year and then switch to another Zone the following year. Win-Win.

I had heard from several people that you could do this even if you were already a TT member. I even had the phone number of a lady in TT Member Services to refer them to in case there was a problem. So, credit card in hand, I called and explained what I wanted to do.

Problem.

The young lady I talked to, ‘Anna’ (if that is her real name, might be ‘Peggy’ for all I know), immediately said, “I’m sorry, you can’t do that. You can only have one TT membership at a time. So if you buy a Zone Pass it will cancel your regular TT membership.”

‘Aha’.

Ready for this eventuality, I brandished the name of my TT Member Services contact like showing a cross to a vampire.

‘Anna’ said, “Oh, I know her. I’ll give her a call. Hold on for a minute.” When she came back, ‘Anna’ said, “She’s on another call. Let me call you back after I talk to her.”

And when ‘Anna’ called me back, she said, “I just talked with my friend, and she also said you can’t do that, and she never told anyone you could.”

At this point, the vampire took my cross, hit me over the head with it, and sank his fangs into my neck. Just my luck, probably a Jewish vampire.

Then ‘Anna’ said, “She did say that you could get a Zone Pass as a TT member if you have an Elite or Elite Connections membership.”

Ok, this is just stupid, First the RCG card, and now the Zone Pass, are restricted to TT Elite members. But if have an Elite membership, you don’t NEED an RCG or Zone Pass. You already have all the parks that the two cards would give you.

When I asked ‘Anna’ why an Elite member would want a Zone Pass, she couldn’t explain it. Just like the young lady at the RCG office the other day, no one seems to know why. It just is.

But what’s even funnier about this, is that from Thousand Trails standpoint, they just lost between $300 and $1000 from me. I’m not going to upgrade to an Elite membership, at least not at the prices I’ve been quoted. So they’re not going to make money from me on that.

But by restricting the RCG and Zone Passes to Elite members, they’re also losing out on as much another $1000 from me, too.

But then this is Thousand Trails we’re talking about.

When I got back, Jan said that Todd told her that the husband of one of the two new gate guards was working another 12 hr. gate.

Hey, gates are in short supply.

Double-dipping shouldn’t be allowed. LOL.

A Little Misunderstanding . . .

Yesterday our SIL Lowell posted a video from the Texas Renaissance Festival, and we thought that he was there with Brandi and Landon.

And it got Jan and I to thinking about going this year. and then I stumbled across the fact that we could get free tickets from Denny’s.  But only for today, Sunday.

Normally $30 each, if you bought a $20 gift card from Denny’s, you got a free Sunday ticket to the Festival, So two gift cards, two free tickets. Neat!

The Denny’s deal was only available at the Denny’s in this area, but not the one in Conroe, so this morning I called the one in Magnolia to confirm that they had the free tickets, and we were out the door.

After picking up our tickets we got to the Festival about 11:30, along with a lot of other people. Today was the 2nd day of the 2016 season and I was surprised at how busy they already were.

TexasRenFest 2016 1

And of course the first thing we did was to get something to eat. I got my favorite Sausage on a Stick, while Jan got a Sesame Chicken on a Stick, and we split a Baked Sweet Potato.

We’ve been coming here since the early 80’s, but I think this was the first time we’ve ever come by ourselves. But as it turns out, our trip today was due to a misunderstanding.

After we’d been at the park for a while, I called Brandi to thank her and Lowell for giving us the idea. But as it turned out, they weren’t here yesterday at all. Lowell had just posted the video because it was opening day here.

TexasRenFest 2016 2

This Renaissance Festival is the biggest one in the country, and covering almost 60 acres, it hosts over 500,000 people a season. And coming here as long as we have, we’ve watched it grow over the years, with something new every time.

In fact just since we were here in 2013 with the whole family,

TexRenFest 14

we noticed a lot of new attractions and areas, including a climbing tower and some new kiddie rides.

TexasRenFest 2016 10

But Jan and I both agreed that one of our favorite things to do is to just ‘people-watch. And you will see some very strange outfits and very strange-looking people.

TexasRenFest 2016 3

Some of them are performers, like the ‘lady’ above. And some are visitors, like the family below who just dress up for the fun of it.

And no, you don’t get in free if you’re in costume.

TexasRenFest 2016 4

You’ll see pirates, piratettes, German Frauleins, and even a refugee from the Village People.

TexasRenFest 2016 5

You’ve heard of a Congress of Owls, a Murder of Crows, or even a Memory of Elephants. So how about a Huddle of Fairies?

TexasRenFest 2016 11

Or maybe a Triplet of Fairies, because from the front they all looked like identical sisters.

And some are working for tips, like this Valkyrie Princess.

TexasRenFest 2016 12

TexasRenFest 2016 13

Or even whatever this is supposed to be. But whatever he is, I bet he’s hot.

TexasRenFest 2016 15

Apparently in past years,  they even had a nude Lady Godiva.

TexasRenFest Lady Godiva

Cue Peter and Gordon.

Our favorite ‘must-see’ part of the Faire is the Birds of Prey show, one that we’ve attended on every visit.

TexasRenFest 2016 6

TexasRenFest 2016 7

The people who do this take and rehabilitate injured wild animals for the state. Ones that are so injured that they can not be returned to their natural habitat are used in the show.

They have several different kinds of hawks, falcons, owls and vultures, all of which are trained to fly out across the audience to handlers holding up food for them.

TexasRenFest 2016 8

However they do warn you to keep your Turkey Legs out of sight, just in case.

And some of them you get to see up close and personal like this Red-tailed Hawk.

TexasRenFest 2016 9

By 4:30 we were pooped and ready to head home. We had a great time, but I told Jan if we ever come again, we may have to rent a pair of those electric scooters.

She Never Called . . .

First thing after I got down to Clear Lake I got on the phone to Verizon to find out where all my data went, 15 GB in 19 hours.

It took about 15 minutes to finally get to someone who could help me. But it still took me a while to convince her that there was no way I could download or stream 750 MB an HOUR for almost 20 hours straight.

But after a bit when she finally figured out that I knew what I was talking about, she thought she thought the problem might be with my MiFi. So she said she was going to give me my data back and then call me tonight at 6:30pm to run some diagnostics on my MiFi. So things were looking up.

I spent a good part of the day tracking down videos and DVD’s of videos. My client sells a number of videos on DVD’s which are generally made (duplicated) to order. But once again the other guy did things his own way.

So I had a stack of unlabeled DVD’s that had been written to, and digital copies scattered around in different folders with undecipherable file names like AD34GD, which has absolutely nothing to do with the video itself.

Because the videos were stored in several different formats, mp4, iso, mv4, VIDEO_TS, etc., I had to find them by searching the drives looking for any file larger than 100MB. Then I had to look at each video, rename it correctly, and then move it into a new folder.

Wednesday I’ll have to start going through the stack, one at a time, to see what’s on them, label them temporarily with a Post-It, and then later print up real labels for them.

Getting back to the rig about 5:15, the first thing I noticed was that the sites were still redbagged, so I guess they didn’t get the electric panel repaired.

Jan and I turned right around and headed back out to the Whataburger over in Willis for dinner. We each got our own version of the #6 burgers with combo fries and drinks. And then wrapped it all up with a Coffee Shake. Really great!

Coming back into the park, the ranger said they didn’t work today because it was Columbus Day.

Getting back to the rig by 6:15, I was all ready for Verizon to call at 6:30, but I was stood up. No one called.

And even worse, when I checked my MiFi, I found that that my data had NOT been reset, and I was still running at the 600 KBs downgraded speed, not the 30 MBs that I normally get under 4G.

So I guess I’ll be back on the phone to Verizon tomorrow.

October 9, 2018

I Blushed A Little . . .

Well, A Lot.

We were up about 6:30 this morning, wanting to get an early start on our 320 miles run down to the Mims/Titusville area. The weather reports were all over the place about how much rain we could expect along the Florida panhandle before we turned south on I-95 at Jacksonville.

But since here in the Eastern Time Zone, the sun didn’t even rise until about 7:30 we still had time to take it easy and drink our coffee. When I finally went outside to take down the satellite dome, I was surprised to see that the park had pretty much filled up with rigs during the night.

We pulled out a little after 8am and stopped right out front at the Marathon station to get diesel. After finally getting the pump to work on credit (it didn’t take debit) it gave me $100.00 worth at $3.599 a gallon, so about 28 gallons. But I needed about 100 gallons.

So not wanting to fuss with the pump anymore, I went inside to ask the Asian lady, who also owns the park, “Would you please turn me on?”

Poor choice of words, as it turned out. Well, maybe not.

She smiled, reached up, and stroked the beard of the left side of my face.

“How’s that?”, she said with a smile.

“Nice.”, I said with a slight stutter, “But I meant my diesel pump.”

“Oh”, she said, smiling as she clicked on the screen.

Note, that I didn’t tell Jan about this until we were well down the road.

I’m not sure I should tell her that I was planning for us to stay here again on our way back to Houston.

Along our eastern route we ran into some spots of moderate rain, but nothing really heavy or long-lasting. We turned south on I-95 about noon, looking at only another two hours until we were in Titusville.

But as they say, The best laid plans . . . and all that.

About 50 miles from our destination, the Seasons In The Sun RV Park in Mims, the southbound traffic on I-95 came to a complete halt. Checking online, we found out that a couple of tractor-trailers had collided with one fatality at exit 237, the one for Ormond Beach/US 1. Looking at our Delorme Street Atlas GPS, I saw that was about 3 miles ahead of us.

And it took us almost 2 hours to creep-travel the 3 miles, and by the time we got there, nothing was left of the accident, and everyone just sped up like it never happened.

We pulled into the the Seasons RV Park, got checked in, found our site, and tried to back in.

I say ‘tried’, because there was just no way to make our 40 foot rig bend like that. Between the marker post at the front of our site, the site next door, and the empty site across the street with the marker post AND a tree, there was just no way to make the backing turn into the site.

Then as I was standing outside with Jan trying to figure out how to make this work, I looked down at our site’s marker post and noticed something.

The hole was a lot bigger than the post. With one of those “Ah-Ha’ moments, I lifted the loose post out of the ground and laid it aside. Someone else had already solved the problem.

After that, it was easy-peazy.

Getting plugged into shore power, we changed clothes and headed into Titusville to Dixie Crossroads, a long, long time favorite of ours, dating back to the mid-80’s.

More about Dixie Crossroads tomorrow. I’m tired.

She Really Likes It !

Jan’s feeling a lot better today and seems to be on the mend.

A couple of days ago she got a new toy to use reading her Kindles. Yes, I mean ‘Kindles’. She has 3, two PaperWhites, and a Fire that only gets used as a Kindle. She does this so she always has a least one charging at any one time, with one of the Kindles being her bed-reading one.

So when I saw this online I knew she’d like it, and she really does.

Tablet Prop

It’s a Foam Tablet Holder with 3 different angles, one better for sitting in your lap, and another for reading while lying in bed. And a third one in between.

It comes in 5 different colors, and it’s only $11.99. The only downside is that it actually ships from China and took almost 2 weeks to get here. But it is Free Shipping.

Jan likes hers so much that we ordered one for Landon since he’s always on his iPad.

I’ve also received a few new toys in the last few days too.

First up was a really neat lightbox for taking photos of products for work.

Flashery Lightbox

It’s from Flashery and even has a built-in light source for even lighting with no shadows. It folds up flat and stores away, and comes with red, green, and black backgrounds, as well as white. The large version (15.7” x 15.7” x 15.7”), which I got is only $70.

And the result is photos like this.

Lightbox Product

No shadows, no background, just floating in mid-air.

Next up is a 10” x  6.25” XP-Pen Graphics Pen Tablet, also for work.

XP-PEN Graphics Pen Tablet

It comes with a pen with 8192 levels of pressure sensitivity and works with both PC’s and Androids. And even better, it’s only $60.

The M.2 SSD for the HP Envy Laptop that I’m upgrading for a friend should be in tomorrow. I’m taking it from 256GB up to 1TB. And as it turns out I’m also going to upgrade the RAM for 8GB to 16GB.

When I got inside I found the laptop had two RAM  sockets, with an 8GB stick in one slot. Now normally the laptop manufacturers go cheap and put two 4GB in the two slots. This means that if you want to upgrade the RAM you have to replace both sticks.

But now I just have to put another 8GB stick for a new total of 16GB, for a cost of only $34.

Tomorrow I’m going to check out under the bed to get a look at the Oil Filter Adapter to see if I have a one-piece or two-piece unit. Of course I may end up under the rig again too.

Finishing up, I’ve mentioned before that Jan and I met at Florida Wonderland in Titusville, FL during the summer of 1967 when we were both working there. So it was interesting to come across this flyer from about 1963.

During this time they had a lot of movie/TV stars appearing there, including Michael Landon and a number of others. But by the time we were there 4 years later, the place had gone downhill and become slightly seedy. And no elephants.

But it certainly worked out for us.

Helicoiling . . .

Though it rained most of the day today, due to the sidebands of Hurricane Delta coming onshore in Louisiana right now, I still plan to get under the rig tomorrow afternoon to get back to work on Helicoiling my oil filter adapter mount, muddy ground or not. It’s supposed sunny both tomorrow and Sunday so hopefully I can finish up this weekend.

Still waiting on our SD Absentee Ballots. They were mailed out on the 28th of September, so it will be two weeks this coming Monday. Wonder if they’re lying in a ditch somewhere?

A Lot of Walking, A Lot of Fun, and

A Little Too Much Sun.

We had a great time at the Wings of Houston Airshow today, but all that sun and walking really wore us out. Plus I’ve got a lot of photos to look through.

So this is all you get now.

WOH TB 1

More tomorrow with a full report.

The Busy Season . . .

Just for a moment this evening 5G showed up on my phone. But it disappeared before I could run Speedtest.net.

Maybe soon?

Tomorrow starts off our really busy season, with the Alvin Opry this Friday night, and then our Family Weekend in New Braunfels/San Antonio Saturday and Sunday.

The weekend after, the 22nd-23rd, we’ve got the Pumpkin Spice Market, a surprise Birthday Party for a friend, and then we’re going to be up in the Trinity area getting together with some RV friends.

Then the last weekend of the month, 20th-30th, we’ve the Wings Over Houston Airshow.

And November isn’t any less busy, but more about that later.

Lunch today was at Gator’s Bar & Grill over in Dickinson.

Jan got her usual Strawberry Walnut Salad with Grilled Chicken

while I got a Bacon, Sausage, and Cheese 3 egg Omelet with Fruit.

And of course you’ve got to figure that a place called Gator’s would have Gator on the menu. Next time I’m going to add gator to my omelet,

And of course there’s always Gator and Grits.

Maybe next time.

Then it was off to HEB for our week’s stuff before heading home for the night.

A while back I mentioned Brach’s complete Turkey Dinner Candy Corn in case you didn’t feel like cooking.

And now Heinz has a soup for Christmas Dinner.

It contains “big chunks” of turkey, pigs in blankets, brussels sprouts, stuffing balls and potatoes, with a gravy and cranberry sauce.

Needless to say, this is the British version of Christmas.

Chainsaw Redux . . .

I mentioned a couple of weeks ago that I was tasked with repairing my client’s small cordless chainsaw.

After I got it back together and checked it out, I told him that it badly needed oiling and that he should do that before he used it. I said that any normal auto motor oil would be fine.

Well today, he brought it back in and said it didn’t work. And when I asked what it was doing wrong, he said it wouldn’t cut anything. I noticed that the chain was now wet with oil, but when I looked at it closer, I immediately saw the problem.

I then asked him how he oiled it and he said he loosened the chain and poured some oil on it. And when I asked if while he was doing this, did the chain come off? And he said yes.

So I told him that the next time he takes the chain off to be sure that when he puts it back on that the cutting teeth are pointing in the right direction, and not backward.

That’s how my day went.

What about yours?
