Karma has finally discovered the heated mattress pad on our bed, at least for this winter. And the extra-fluffy spread didn’t hurt either.

Looks like Pawhuska is all decorated for our visit next week, and Jan’s already giddy.

* * * * * * *

Though we won’t be gone for as long as we were on our AL/FL last month, I went ahead and had the USPS hold our mail until we get back on the 17th.

Tomorrow it’s lunch at Los Ramirez Mexican, and then our weekly Wal-Mart visit.

Rudy’s and Lockhart . . .

We left the lake house about 10:30 this morning. Everyone headed out at different times. Lowell, Brandi, and Landon left first, and Chris, Linda, and Piper were finishing up the closing-up of the cottage when we left.

As we had planned, we stopped off at Rudy’s Country BBQ on I-35 in Round Rock for lunch. Really great BBQ! And Jan really loves their Creamed Corn, and she doesn’t like corn!

We took a new route home this time, down US-183 through Lockhart, a town we had never visited. Driving through town, our eyes were immediately drawn to the ornate courthouse on the town square, a block off our route. It was so distinctive I had to stop and take a couple of photos.

I really don’t ever remember seeing a courthouse with this much color and detail.

Lockhart County House

Built in 1894, it is listed as the most photographed courthouse in Texas. And it’s easy to see why.

Lockhart County House2

Here’s an aerial shot from the courthouse website.

LockhartTXCourthouseAerial1008PaulTurner2

I noticed many of the buildings around the square had dates on them from the same time period.

All in all, a beautiful little town.

Our next stop was Buc-ee’s, about an hour away, right as we got back on I-10. Great place for a potty break and some good coffee. Jan also got one of their great cranberry muffins for breakfast tomorrow.

It’s always amazing how big and busy this place is. They have over 40 gas pumps, and I still would have had to wait in line to get gas. So I decided to hold off until we got to the Flying J about 100 miles down the road.

Buc-ees

After stopping at the FJ for gas, it was only about 25 miles until we hit Beltway 8 to bypass Houston to the south, heading back to the RV park and home.

But we had one more stop to make at Sam’s for some more kitty litter. Since we were going to be gone 5 days, Jan set out 3 extra litter boxes, which used up what we had.

After that stop, it was home for the night after a great vacation with family and friends, short as it was.

That’s it for now.

Tookie’s and Ma Bell . . .

Jan and I headed out a little before 11 am to meet Brandi, Lowell, and Landon at our favorite local hamburger place, Tookie’s, for lunch. Landon was not feeling well last night, so they stayed home with him today. But of course, by this morning, he was fine.

So after our Tookie’s delicious burgers, Jan went back to Brandi’s with them, while I headed out to a client’s. But my first stop was Fry’s Electronics to pick up a Netgear Wireless Router and an LG LCD/LED monitor for him.

But when I got to the client’s home, I found another problem. His DSL service was down.

Just a note here. It’s about 10:30 pm right now, and it’s snowing a little north of Houston. Now back to your regularly scheduled blog.

So I spent the next 3 hours on the phone with AT&T trying to convince them that I had checked everything and the problem was either with the line or the DSL modem. By the time they admitted I was right, it was too late for them to set up a service call for today. So we’ll have to wait until tomorrow, sometime between 8 am and 8 pm.

Nice of them to narrow it down for us.

Finally, I headed over to Brandi’s about 4:30 to pick up Jan and head on home. We had planned to just have leftovers tonight, but since we were so close, we decided to have dinner at Barcenas Mexican Restaurant, a place right outside of our subdivision that we’ve eaten at for years.

We used to eat here all the time, especially when we lived in an apartment right across the street, as we were getting ready to go full-time. But with everything going on last year, we never got here, so it was nice to be remembered by our waiter, Leno.

We both had our usual, my Carnitas de Puerco and Jan’s Tex-Mex Enchiladas, and it was as good as we remembered.

They’re supposed to call me an hour before the AT&T tech shows up so I guess I could get called at 7 am. But I’ll probably end up hanging around all day waiting on them.

Ducks and a Dynasty . . .

Today was another nice, quiet stay-at-home day. It was overcast and never got out of the 60’s. Just perfect for sitting back with a large mug of hot coffee and enjoying life.

Later in the morning, Jan went out to feed the birds, and it’s amazing how quickly the word gets out. Within just a few minutes, the ducks show up in a line from their pond about 100 yards away. They can’t see the feeder from the pond, so the only thing I can figure is that they post a lookout to keep an eye on things. But show up they do.

Duck Line 1

Pretty soon the feeder area is swarming with birds, and a lot of squawking, chirping, and tweeting commences.

Duck Line 2

About 6 pm, Jan and I headed out to meet Chris, Linda, and Piper at the Mario’s Flying Pizza up in Seabrook, one of our regular dining spots.

After a good meal, Jan and I followed them home so I could get their Epson printer installed on their new laptop.

While there, I got a shot of our beautiful granddaughter Piper. I fondly remember the good old days when she would pose at the drop of a hat. Now she grew up and got shy.

Piper in A Blanket

I guess I’ll just have to repost this photo from a couple of years ago.

Piper at Chuys 5

When we got home, we found that Lowell had sent over a photo of Landon’s visit with Santa Claus.

From the look on his face, I think Santa just told him he’s on Santa’s Naughty List.

Landon Christmas 2012

While we were up in Marble Falls over Thanksgiving, we stumbled upon Duck Dynasty, a reality program showing on the A&E cable channel, when they were running a show marathon.

It’s the story of the Robertson family, living in Monroe, Louisiana, who, 40 years ago, started a company called Duck Commander, and became millionaires making and selling duck calls.

Yes, duck calls!

Miss Kay, Phil, Willie, Korie, Jase and Si Robertson (from left)

The show is hilarious, and these guys who look like rejects from a ZZ Top look-a-like contest make the show. Although it’s called a Reality Show, the family refers to it as “guided reality”. Every show has a theme and ends with a life lesson, usually centered on the family.

It’s funny and well worth watching.

But wait, there’s more.

Phil Robertson

Phil Robertson, the patriarch of the family, and the one who started the company, has another side. He’s a graduate of Louisiana Tech University, and actually has a Master’s of Education degree.

And while he was at Louisiana Tech, he played football. And as the 1st string starting quarterback, he was very good. So good in fact that he had an offer from the Washington Redskins.

Even his 2nd string quarterback said Phil had the best arm he’d ever seen. He also said he knew Phil really liked to hunt because he would show up at practice with squirrel tails hanging out of his jacket and covered in duck feathers. But since he was obviously a very good shot, no one complained.

But with a year of eligibility remaining, Phil decided that as much as he loved football, he loved hunting better. So he gave up football to have more time for hunting, and a few years later started Duck Commander.

And the rest is history.

Oh yeah. The 2nd string quarterback who said Phil Robertson had the best arm he’d ever seen, and who didn’t get much playing time until Phil quit football … that would be Terry Bradshaw, top draft pick in 1970, who played 14 seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, won 4 Super Bowls, and a spot in the Hall of Fame.

That Terry Bradshaw.

A Blast from our Past . . .

This morning started out with a blast from the past. Rudy Legett, whom we first met two years ago, came knocking at our door. He was in the area checking on one of his Aqua Hot clients and stopped by to say ‘Hi’. We first met Rudy and his wife, Carolyn, about two years ago when we had lunch with them at the Monument Inn on the Texas Ship Channel.

Rudy is a dealer/installer for Aqua Hot, a system that uses engine heat, diesel fuel, or AC shore power to provide both cabin heat and hot water for your RV.

A neat system.

Jan’s been feeling a little under the weather the last few days with sinus/allergy problems, but this afternoon she decided that today being Thursday, it was a good day for Cracker Barrel’s Turkey and Dressing. So about 4 pm, we headed up to League City with a stop along the way at Dues RV in Dickinson for a lead on a glass place to replace our cracked windshield. The guy that I used back in 2009 is apparently out of business, so I need a new guy.

At Cracker Barrel, Jan had her Turkey and Dressing while I had a cup of Country Ham Soup (very good) and an order of Beans & Greens (A cup of red beans and a cup of Turnip Greens cooked with Ham. Also very good.)

Next was a little further up I-45 for Sam’s Club and Wal-Mart for supplies and prescriptions, and then a stop at our storeroom to drop off a few things, finally getting home a little after 7:30 pm.

Since I mentioned our visit to Monument Inn with Rudy and Carolyn, I thought I would repost that blog.

Monuments and Battleships . . .

Today started with a trip up to the Houston Ship Channel for lunch at Monument Inn. Located right on the Channel, where, along with really great seafood, you get a fascinating view of the large barges and ships coming up from Galveston Bay to the Port of Houston.

We were meeting Rudy Legett and his wife, Caroline, there for lunch. Rudy is an Aqua Hot Repair Technician and one of the few who will come to your coach, rather than you having to take your coach to them.

We had a great time getting to know Rudy and Caroline, and hope to run into them on the road again soon.

Leaving Monument Inn, we stopped off right down the road to get some photos of the San Jacinto Monument, where Sam Houston surprised Santa Anna and his troops, and defeated the 1400-man force with only 900 Texans. Over 600 Mexicans were killed, and more than 700 were captured. Meanwhile, only 9 Texans were killed.

San Jacinto Monument

Across the road from the Monument lies the Battleship Texas, the only remaining dreadnaught battleship, and one of the few that served in both WWI and WWII.

Battleship Texas

The USS Texas fought at the D-Day Landing in Europe, and the Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa in the Pacific, and after being decommissioned in 1948, became the first US battleship to become a permanent museum.

Coming back to the RV park, I dropped everyone off and headed back into Clear Lake to work with a couple of clients.

Finally getting home about 5 pm, I napped for about an hour. Then, after watching one of our favorite shows, The Big Bang Theory, we drove over to Dickinson to have a late dinner at Monterey’s Little Mexico.

Tomorrow we’re going to drive down to Galveston to see the sights, and then tomorrow night we’re having dinner at Floyd’s Cajun Seafood with Brandi, Lowell, and Landon.

O Tannenbaum . . .

Jan spent the early afternoon decorating our Norfolk Pine Christmas Tree, and it came out very nice. It fits perfectly on the dining room table and looks really good.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

After a late lunch of our King Food leftovers from last weekend, I headed out a little about 3:30 for a few errands, with my first stop at the Dollar General over in Willis to get another bottle of Awesome Cleaner. I’d just about used up my old bottle trying to clean the drilling mud off the roof of our RV, so it was time to restock.

Then I walked next door to the AutoZone to get a 12V accent light. Our big analog clock that hangs over the driver’s chair can be hard to see at night when we’re watching TV, so I thought I’d find one of those small white LED lights that people use in their cars. It took a few minutes, but I found exactly what I needed.

Next, I stopped off at the Kroger’s gas station to fill up at $2.29 a gallon with my Kroger’s card. Since we’re driving down to Clear Lake tomorrow, we won’t have to fill up along the way.

Last up, I made a quick stop by the Kroger’s itself to pick up a couple of things, including a new bottle of coffee creamer to replace the new bottle I just bought a couple of days ago.

Why, you might ask?

Well, when I put the big bottle of creamer back on the top shelf of the fridge after our coffee this morning, I made sure the pop-up top was fastened down, but didn’t notice that the entire top had loosened on the bottle, which spent the day slowly emptying down through the shelves to pool in the bottom.

In other words, a mess.

So I spent the early evening starting at the top and emptying each shelf, cleaning off the food, and then putting everything back as I worked my way down. I only did about two shelves at a time, and then took a 15-minute break so the food didn’t get too warm.

I’m double-checking the top from now on.

Brandi sent over a photo of Landon’s latest artwork from his school.

Looks like he’s got the Ninja Turtles down pat.

Tomorrow, Jan and I are meeting all the kids down in Clear Lake about 11:30. First, we’re eating lunch at Floyd’s Cajun Seafood and then going over to our storeroom so we can all go through the last of the stuff to see what everyone wants. Hopefully, we’ll be out by the end of the year.

Wrapping Up Here in Conroe . . .

Today’s our last full day here at the Lake Conroe Thousand Trails. Tomorrow we’ll head over to the Colorado River Thousand Trails in Columbus, TX, 120 miles away, where we’ll be for the next two weeks. Then it’s back and forth every two weeks until sometime in the March-April timeframe.

Then we’ll head east to Florida, where at some point, then head north all the way up to Essex Junction, VT, for the 56th Annual Escapade, July 24 to 29, 2016.

After goofing off most of the morning, we headed out about 12:30 to meet Debi and Ed Hurlburt at El Bosque Mexican Restaurant for lunch. They just got here a few days ago, and we wanted to be sure we got together before we leave.

As usual, when RV’ers get together after not seeing each other for a while, there was, believe it or not, more talking than eating, at least time-wise. In fact, we sat there and talked for a little over three hours, covering everything from cataract surgery to new flooring in the RV.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

Finally getting in our hugs and handshakes, we headed out with a promise to get together again, this time for Chinese, when we’re back here in two weeks.

As we were leaving, I saw this really neat 1937 Packard out in the parking lot. Very, very nice.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

Next up for Jan and me, we went right across the street to the Starbuck’s for a couple of Chestnut Praline Lattes. We first had these last Christmas when we got them by accident due to bad handwriting. We ordered Cinnamon Dolce Lattes, and the barista thought that the cashier’s CD looked like CP, so we got Chestnut Praline Lattes instead. And they were delicious. Possibly the best latte we’ve ever had.

And it’s never been that good since then. And the one today was not an improvement. Even though it supposedly had a double shot of the syrup, it didn’t really have any flavor, and it was bitter. So bitter that even Jan added 1/2 pack of Equal.

There’s a reason some people call it Charbucks.

So right now I think we’re about 1 for 6, so at some point we’ll probably just give up and go back to our Cinnamon Dolce’s.

Then, getting back to the rig, I took care of a few chores to get ready for tomorrow’s trip. First up, I wanted to install the new Clean Machine Step Mat that I picked up at the Camping World this past Thursday.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

The mat comes with three long, heavy-duty tie-wraps that connect underneath through large brass grommets.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

This locks the mat in place, allowing no twisting or movement.

The only problem people have reported is when they try to put these mats on the multiple retractable steps. Apparently, these mats are too thick and don’t allow the steps to retract properly. So, you’ve been warned.

After stowing away the outside chairs and a few other things, I finished up by plugging in my engine block heater. It’s supposed to be in the high 30’s tonight, and only in the 40’s when we leave around 10 am, and having warm engine oil is always a good thing.

Sorry ‘Bout That . . .

A Correction.

I’m not sure how, but the link to the Checkpoint website to check for the Gooligan virus somehow grew an extra ‘g’ and didn’t work. I know it worked originally since I tried it before I published the blog. But apparently, between here and there, it all went bad.

Anyway, thanks to blog reader Jerry Walter for pointing this out this morning.

I corrected yesterday’s blog, and here’s the corrected link here too.

gooligan.checkpoint.com

After three days of on and off heavy rain, it finally cleared this afternoon. But we were lucky compared to some areas in Texas that had over a foot of rain with heavy flooding. But now it looks like we’ve got some clear but cool weather in store for the next several days.

We’ve got a couple of daytrips planned in the next three days, if we don’t get a gate in the meantime

First up is a trip down to Beeville, about 30 miles south of here, for lunch and a 4 pm movie. We’ve heard a lot about the Beeville Diner and wanted to give it a try. The Yelp reviews seem to be either 1 star or 5 stars, mostly due to problems with service. The online menu shows a nice selection of items, so we’ll take our chances, I guess.

Then, after lunch, we’re going to take in a movie. Yes, Beeville has a 6-screen theater, so we’re going to see Arrival, the science fiction movie starring Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and Forest Whitaker. It’s gotten really good reviews, and we’re looking forward to it.

Then on Thursday, we’re doing another trip into San Antonio, or at least the southern edge of it. I didn’t realize I was low on one of my prescriptions when we went into SA last Thursday, so we’re going back to the Sam’s to pick it up. I could get it at the local Wal-Mart here in Kenedy, but here it would cost me $56. However, with my Sam’s Plus membership, it will only be $10. So the $40 difference will pay for gas, Turkey & Dressing at Cracker Barrel, and another movie, Dr. Strange, another science fiction movie. Are you sensing a pattern here?

Of course, this could all go away if I get a gate in the next few days.

Food and Fun . . .

We were out the door about 12:15 pm today for a busy afternoon of food and fun. Well, maybe not so much fun as errands.

Our first stop was up in Kemah at Sundowner Canvas to drop off the sample for our new window awnings. I wanted to be sure that they measure the Sunbrella fabric along the ribs, and not in the middle where it’s shrunk due to the sun exposure.

Then, when they finish one awning, I will bring another one to them, and pick up the done one. That way, they can reuse the plastic ribs from the old awnings.

The first one should be done in a week or so.

Leaving Sundowner’s, we headed on up 146 to Pasadena for another shot at meeting up with our friend Julie at the Monterey’s Little Mexico restaurant there. We had tried to catch her last week, but she was off. So this time we called ahead and talked to the manager to be sure she was there.

Since we’d asked the manager not to say anything to her, she was really surprised when we walked in.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

We’d known Julie for over 15 years when she worked at the Monterey’s down in Dickinson. She said that they’re doing a complete remodel on the Dickinson location, which was flooded out in Harvey. They’re also taking in the store next door to enlarge it too. Should be open in March.

After a great meal of Chicken Tortilla Soup and Beef Fajita Nachos, we got our good-bye hugs and headed down to the Wal-Mart in Webster for a few things, and also to double-check my extended warranty on our Samsung TV in case I end up having to replace it. But the Customer Service ladies said I would have to call Headquarters.

Then it was on over to our son Chris’ to pick up our mail and go through some more stuff from the attic. Going through a bunch more boxes, I found some really neat things about my father and his time on the Birmingham Police Department back in the 1930’s – 1950’s that I’ll share with you later.

5:15 . . . In The Morning?

We were originally told that Jan’s cataract surgery was scheduled for 9 am tomorrow morning. So we figured that we’d need to be at the Surgicare Care about 7:30-8:00.

So we were VERY surprised when we got a call this morning to tell us that Jan needed to be there at . . . wait for it . . . 5:15 in the AM.

She will be the first patient of the morning, but we don’t know if they’re just starting a lot earlier or what. Or maybe just a lot of pre-op stuff. Though neither of us remembers a lot of prep stuff like this when Jan’s mother had hers done.

Besides being just generally nervous about this, the worst part of the whole thing for Jan is the eye drops. Three times a day today, and then various amounts over the next three weeks. And of course, doubling up starting next Wednesday, before her 2nd surgery.

The problem with all this is that Jan is EXTREMELY ‘eye-shy’, as in running away screaming ‘eye-shy’. So if she’s this bad with the drops, we can only hope she’s heavily sedated for the actual operation.

On the way home this afternoon, I did stop by the Los Ramirez restaurant to get a few photos of the Christmas windows. Really nice, especially considering how fast the lady did it.

A New York State of Mind . . .

The day couldn’t have gone more perfectly.

We were up at 3 am, our car service guy showed up about 4:15, and we were on our way up to Hobby Airport by about 4:30. Right on schedule. And I didn’t forget my camera or laptop this time.

We got dropped off at the Southwest entrance a little after 5 am, and we tagged and checked in our 3 suitcases a few minutes later.

One nice thing about this flight is that, unlike our recent European flights, we could check in 2 bags each, not just one. So we had no carrying-on stuff, other than Jan’s large purse and my laptop bag.

The only problem was that our online check-in got screwed up, and we ended up boarding in the last group. So by that time, there were only center seats left, so we couldn’t sit together. But it was a nice, smooth flight and we actually got in at 10:50 am (9:50CT), 5 minutes early.

Probably because we were doing almost 600 mph.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

We had to wait about 15 minutes for our luggage, and while we were doing that, an enterprising Skycap came by and asked us where we were going. I told him that we were going to get a taxi or Uber to a hotel near Times Square.

Now, there were signs all over the baggage area that, due to the ongoing construction of a new terminal at LaGuardia, you had to take a shuttle bus to a place about 15 minutes away, where you could then get a taxi or an Uber. When I mentioned this to him, he said this was not necessary, and he could take care of this for us.

Kind of wary of the City Slicker swindling the Country Rubes, I asked how much this would cost, and he said he just worked for tips. And since he had his own luggage cart, I didn’t have to rent one for $6, so I told him OK.

So he grabbed our 3 suitcases when they came around the carousel, and off we went. Jan, of course, was somewhat suspicious. (make that VERY suspicious) but gamely followed along, just knowing at any minute we were going to be ravaged and pillaged.

After about a block, we turned a corner, and there was a long line of people waiting for one of the shuttle buses. Positioned around were electronic signs saying the wait for a taxi or Uber at the other end of the shuttle ride was 55 minutes. And based on the length of the line on this end, it was going to be at least 30 minutes here.

Resigning ourselves to the wait, we started to get in the long line, but he shook his head and motioned us to follow him. And since he was leaving with our luggage, we decided to follow.

He led us around the outside wall of the covered shuttle waiting area, past several policemen, who nodded to him (made us feel better), and then across the street. There, behind a police barricade, was a line of Yellow Cabs being waved forward, one by one, by another police officer.

Our SkyCap put our luggage in the trunk, I tipped him, and we were on our way, less than 10 minutes after we got our luggage.

And less than an hour later, he was letting us off at the Hotel Riu Plaza Times Square, about a block and a half off Times Square. And even better, our Uber ride was listed on the app as being about $80, but our taxi ride was only about $60.

Very, very nice.

Checking in, we were told our room was ready, and we ended up with a very nice room on the 25th floor, with an open balcony that we could walk out on, with a great view.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

Even better, though we knew our room came with a full breakfast buffet, we were happily surprised that it also came with their full dinner buffet. Which is advertised as being $35 per person if you had to pay for it.

Neat!

Then it was, of course, time for a nap.

About 3 pm, we made the 2 block walk over to Times Square to check things out, and then headed over to Junior’s Restaurant, just about a half block off Times Square

Jan got their version of her fav Wedge Salad,

while I got their 10 oz. Steakburger,

which we then split with each other.

This was to leave us room for Jan’s Chocolate Mousse Cheesecake

and my Carrot Cake Cheesecake.

And of course, you can’t have Junior’s World-Famous Cheesecake without a nice hot Cappuccino to go along with it. Especially when it’s 39 degrees outside.

We ate several times when we were here in 2009 and really loved it, so it had to be our first place to eat when we got here again.

By the time we finished, it was getting dark here (about 4:30 here in the ET), so we walked back out to Times Square to check out the lights.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

One big change we noticed since we were here in 2009 was that Broadway is now open to traffic.

But when we were here in 2009, Broadway was closed to traffic for many blocks in each direction, as you can see here.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

It was a little warmer then, too. It was about 36 degrees when we sat out for a while this evening.

Getting back to the hotel after about a ten-minute walk, we checked out the view from the 25th floor at the end of the hallway.

What A Country!

Well, we made it to Branson this afternoon by about two o’clock pm. Nice, smooth trip up from Texarkana.

We first went by and picked up our tickets that we bought online from one of the many discount places. and then had a lunch special at Famous Dave’s, one of our favorite barbecue places.

Famous Dave's BBQ Branson

By the time we were done, it was three o’clock, and we could check into the hotel.

We were going to be staying at the Twelve Oaks Inn right off the west end of the US 76 Loop, and convenient to everything.

Twelve Oaks Branson

Turned out to be a very nice privately-owned place with nice rooms and friendly people.

After resting up for a couple of hours, we headed out for the first show of our week in Branson, Yakov Smirnoff.

Unlike most other theaters, Yakov’s is not on the main Strip, but up north of town.

Yakov Theater

Besides seeing Yakov in Galveston this past July, we also saw him when we last visited Branson in November 2011, so we definitely wanted to see him again.

Having lived in the Soviet Union until he was 26, when he and his parents managed to get out. There, he was an art teacher, as well as a ‘licensed’ comedian.

Yes, in Russia, all comedians have to be licensed. And all their jokes have to be approved by a committee. No wonder he wanted out of there.

Yakov Branson 1

Besides talking about humor, laughter, and relationships, his act is overtly patriotic.

As Yakov says, “What A Country!”

A really great show!

A Good Report . . .

We were on our way up to my doctor’s office about 12:45 for my 1:30 appointment, only to not be called in for my cervical X-Rays until a little after 2:15. But that went pretty quickly, and we were talking to my P.A., Alexandria, by 2:45.

She was very happy with the progress of my Cervical Fusion and said the X-Rays looked great. Then we started talking about my possible Lumbar Fusion on L-4, L-5, and L-5, S-1. It seems like I’m feeling some increasing problems in my lumbar area, so I wanted to get some more info on the operation.

Alexandria acknowledged that this operation is more complicated than the cervical one, and will require a 1 to 2-night hospital stay, while the cervical version was an in-and-out the same day. Also, recovery will be somewhat longer, with more possible/probable pain along the way.

So at my request, Alexandria scheduled an MRI and X-Rays on my lumbar area to see if there had been any deterioration since the last lumbar MRI/X-Rays in October 2021. That comparison will give us something to work with on making the decision on whether or not to undergo the lumbar surgery.

I got an email yesterday from the La Crosse Weather Station people saying that they had shipped my replacement rain gauge for the one that died a couple of months ago. Originally, they said it was not going to ship until the end of December, so this is an improvement.

Tomorrow we’re having another Alvin Opry Group get-together, this time at the Webster Saltgrass Steakhouse.

It Was Pho Good. . .

Lunch today was at Pho Barr, and it was just as good as always. Their Pho Ga (Pho with Chicken) is the best.

Then coming home, I stopped off to pick up some pants I had dropped off to have hemmed, and after a P.O. stop, I was home for the night.

Just me and Karma.

Catching up on last night at Brandi’s, I did get to check out some of Landon’s latest 3D creations.

This is an articulated Snowman printed in4 different colors.

And here’s a Slinky Skull printed all at one time.

And this White Elephant is something different. It’s printed with a rubberized filament, fully articulated, and squeezable like a rubber ball.

And here’s Brandi’s two trees for this year.

The big one, about 16 feet high, in the living room,

and the little one in the dining room.

Both beautiful.

Leaving Brandi’s about 6:30, I was able to check out the outside decorations.

Only 12,000 . . .

Well, I’m breaking out the umbrellas for our embarkation this Saturday morning, because it seems we’re looking at 50+ % chance of rain.

And we may be looking at some showers during some of our port visits, too.

Be prepared.

Today we got our haircuts and then had lunch at Los Rameriz Mexican, and then home, where we spent the afternoon doing some light packing and list making.

A couple of days ago, we found out that long-time friends, Jim and Peri, are leaving from Galveston on a Carnival cruise tomorrow, the day before we leave.

He said that we’ll all be in Cozumel on the same day, and with only about 12,000 cruisers in port, it’s almost certain we’ll bump into each other.

Right?

Tomorrow, Jan got some blood work as a follow-up to her Parathyroidectomy back in August, and then it’s on to get her nails done. Followed by our usual German lunch at King’s Bierhaus right next door.

Then it’s back home to finish up packing.

And This Is The Small One . . .

On our way over to Kelley’s Country Cooking in Alvin, we made a brief detour to stop off at the POpShelf store.

Owned by Dollar General, it targets a different customer base, focusing on home decor, seasonal products, and party goods, usually priced at $5 or less.

Coming out with a bag of stuff, Jan and I headed right down the feeder to have lunch at Kelley’s. Unfortunately, Staci, our regular server, was off today, but the food was just as delicious as always.

Jan got one of the Thursday Specials, the Stuffed Chicken Breast (Stuffed with Broccoli-Cheese Casserole), along with more Broccoli-Cheese Casserole, Green Beans, and the Buttered Carrots.

I also got one of the Thursday Specials, the Country Fried Chicken Breast,

with the Red Beans & Rice, Fried Okra, and Green Beans.

And believe it or not, this is the small Country Fried Chicken Breast. The Texas-Sized version takes up the entire plate, hanging over the edges, leaving no room for the veggies.

And even with this smaller one, I could only eat about 1/3 of it, leaving plenty to bring home for tomorrow’s supper. Which meant I didn’t need to stop off at our local McDonald’s on the way home for a McRib like I had originally planned.

It’s amazing that these Daily Specials are only $13.99. A great deal.

Jan, as usual, this time of the year, was sporting another pair of her Christmas earrings.

I think I’ve finally worked out the problem with renewing my South Dakota license plates. After slogging through multiple web pages on the new, crippled website, I saw a mention buried in a lot of fine print that we could also order our plate stickers through our County Treasurer website, which in my case is Clay county.

And after pulling up the email from them to get the correct amounts, I went to the Clay County Treasurer’s website, and 5 minutes later, I had paid for them.

Hopefully, they’ll be on their way pretty quickly. But just in case, I’ve got a copy of my payment receipt in the Jeep to show if I get stopped.

I did finally replace the battery in our Mr. Coffee, so it will stop nagging me now. At least until next time.

* * * * * * *

This time next week, we should be comfortably ensconced in our room at the Tru by Hilton Hotel in Plano, TX, our halfway point on our way up to Pawhuska, O,K for a Pioneer Woman Christmas.

As it stands right now, we plan on having lunch/dinner at the Bavarian Grill right next door to our hotel. They were voted the Best German Restaurant in Texas in 2020, 2021, 2023, and 2025, so we’re looking to see how it compares to our other favorite German restaurant, Der Lindenbaum, located up in Fredericksburg

Linden Trees and Light Shows . . .

This morning got off to an early start when Jan and I left the lake house about 9:15 to drive back down to Fischer to pick up our friend Gina so she could meet up with everyone in Fredericksburg for lunch and get in some Landon time.

We got to Gina’s about 10:30, and then turned right around and headed for Fredericksburg, a little over an hour away.

When we got to Der Lindenbaum, our favorite German restaurant, the rest of the family was waiting at a table for us. We had a great meal of Wienerschnitzel, Jaeger Schnitzel, Bratwurst, German potato salad, sauerkraut, and their fantastic red cabbage.

It seems like we sat around talking all afternoon, but by 1:30, we were back on the road after a great meal. After dropping Gina off, I got back to the lake house about 4:30, just in time for a nap with my head on Jan’s lap. Just heavenly.

We thought we were going to see the Christmas Boat Parade on the lake along with some fireworks, but no lights, no boats, and no fireworks. Apparently, we were told the wrong date.

About 6 pm, we headed out for dinner at Highlander Inn, a really good local buffet restaurant. Then, after the meal, we walked next door to see Burnet’s Christmas Lights along Hamilton Creek. And this time, Landon stayed awake and was fascinated by all the lights.

Lowell and Landon

We got back to the house about 7:30 and settled in for the night.

Once again, Chris and Piper played HALO on the Xbox for a while, and then we watched our favorite Christmas movie, “A Christmas Story”.

“Ralphie, you’ll shoot your eye out with that thing.”

Tomorrow will end our short vacation here in the Texas Hill Country, and we’ll head back to Houston about 10 am or so, probably stopping off for lunch at Rudy’s Country BBQ in Austin on the way.

So more tomorrow from Dickinson Bayou.

Leftovers. . .

This morning got off to a fast start with a call from our son Chris. His truck was overheating, and he thought he’d blown a head gasket, so he wanted our help in towing his truck back home. We decided to combine this with breakfast, so about 10:30, we met at Kelley’s Country Cookin’ in League City.

It’s been a long time since we’ve eaten at Kelley’s, and I had forgotten how big their portions are. I had the Eggs & Chili, with Grits and a Biscuit. I’m sorry I didn’t get a picture of the biscuit. They’re Huge!

The one I had was about 7″ across and about 3″ high. I was only able to eat less than half of it.

We got Chris’ truck towed home with no problems, and then Jan and I headed into Clear Lake to my client’s office for a little while. I finally convinced him to replace his main server, so I’ll have to get started on that soon.

Getting back to the rig, I spent some time moving a few things down to the bays to clear out for the Christmas tree.

Later for supper, Jan heated up our leftover Chinese from King Food the other night. Chinese food is one of those, like Italian, that gets even better as leftovers.

Naked at Hooters . . .

For the first time since we got back to Houston, I did pretty much nothing today. No clients, no errands, no nothing. Just goofing off all day.

We did get a lot of rain off and on during the day, which, along with the overcast skies, kept the temperature down, which was nice.

Finally, about 4:30, we headed up to the Hooters in Seabrook for supper. And luckily for me, it was Sexy Santa Tuesday, so the scenery was even better than normal. Gives a whole new meaning to who’s naughty or nice.

I always order my Hooters’ wings “naked”, which means there is no breading on the wings. Not only do I like the resulting crispy skin better, but it also saves a lot on calories. In this case, 10 “naked” wings have 660 calories, while regular wings have 1750 calories. A big difference!

I also ordered “all drums” instead of a mixture of drums and flappers. I just like them better.

Whenever we eat at Hooters, I always remember my first visit to one. Somewhere around 2000, while I was working in Tech Support at the University of Houston – Clear Lake, we were eating at Floyd’s Cajun Seafood one night with Chris, Linda, and Piper. Miss Piper, who was about 7 at the time, was eating onion rings, and holding one up, said, “These are good, but not as good as the ones at Hooters.”

Well, that brought the conversation to a grinding halt. What was our 7-year-old granddaughter doing at Hooters? Turns out that she and her father sometimes had lunch there. She also said they had really good chicken wings.

Now we had never been there, so about a week later, we all met at Hooters for dinner. I was surprised to see how many other families were there with kids, too.

We’d been there about 15 minutes when, from across the dining room, I hear “Greg!”, and then a few seconds later, I was getting a big hug and a big kiss on the top of my bald head from a Hooters girl. Of course, Jan was very interested in this, and I could feel the cold wind coming my way from her direction.

But before I could really react, the girl said, “Cindy, come here! It’s Greg”. And soon I was getting another hug and kiss. By now, it was getting downright frigid in there.

So I figured my marriage was probably over. But then I finally figured out who the two young ladies were.

It was Jennifer and, of course, Cindy, both students at the university where I worked. Jennifer was finishing up her Master’s Degree in Business (MBA), and a few weeks before, she had come to me one night (I normally worked the night shift there) with a defective ZIP disk.

With tears in her eyes, she told me it held the only final copy of her Master’s thesis that had to be handed in a couple of days from now. From her description, I told her it sounded like her disk was suffering from the infamous “Click of Death“, and said that I had a ZIP drive that I had modified that might be able to read her disk. I told her that I would have to take it home and that she should check back with me the next night.

Luckily, I was able to recover the data and transfer it to a CD for more permanent storage. That got me a big hug and a tearful thank you from her the next night.

Cindy, on the other hand, was getting ready to take her CPA exam, and the hard drive in her Toshiba laptop had died, taking all of her study materials with it. And when her friend Jennifer heard about Cindy’s problem, she sent her to me.

I asked her the name of the folders she needed recovered, and took the laptop home with me. I was able to recover the data from her dead drive by using the old “freezer” trick. This is where you place the bad drive in the freezer for about an hour and then plug it into the computer as a slave drive, and then power up.

If you’re lucky, you will be able to get data off the drive until it warms up. After that, it’s rinse and repeat, until you’ve got everything you need. And luckily for Cindy, it worked this time, too.

As the girls explained this to Jan, I could detect a distinct warming in the atmosphere.

Luckily for me.

So remember the next time you’re at Hooters, your “dumb blonde” waitress may be smarter and better educated than you.

But Jan still got some revenge. After we left Hooters, we stopped off at Kroger’s for a few things. As we were walking around the store, I noticed people looking at me and smiling.

Figuring it probably wasn’t my good looks and sparkling personality, I checked my zipper. By then, I noticed that Jan had a sly smile too. Finally, she told me to go to the restroom and check the mirror.

And there on the top of my gleaming, bald head was the reminder of my Hooters’ hello – two large, bright-red lipstick prints.

Picky, Picky, Picky . . .

Jan and I headed up to Webster about 10 am to pick up our truck from Brock’s Car Care after they finished the repairs. We wanted to do it early since we needed to get the rental car back to Enterprise before noon.

And I will be really glad to turn in this Hyundai Elantra. It is undoubtedly the most uncomfortable car I have ever driven. I like the handling and response, but the seats are sheer torture. The seat backs are curved so that you’re supposed to sit back into them. But my shoulders are wider than the seat edges so that I’m either sitting across the front edges, or I’m sitting sideways, half in and half out of the seat. On top of that, the seat backs don’t have a lot of padding, so they’re not very comfortable anyway.

Plus, there is a large barcode sticker on the bottom rear of the driver’s window that hovers right in my peripheral vision, making me think there’s a car right beside me.

Yeah, I know, picky, picky, picky.

Like most trips to the mechanic, they found some other things that needed fixing. So, all told, I got two new front hubs, new tie rods, a four-wheel alignment, a rear brake job, including rotors and pads, a new battery, and of course, the obligatory lube and oil change.

Then, after dropping off the rental car, we headed up to King Food for a lunch of Chicken in Hot Garlic with Fresh Jalapenos. Mmmm Good!

After lunch, we drove over to the car wash to get 3 months of encrusted caliche dust off the truck. We can actually see what color it is now. Then heading for home, we stopped off at Kroger’s for a few things, and a couple of lattes from the in-store Starbucks.

Getting back to the rig, I started to unpack some things from the truck. The main thing I wanted to get out was the fabric top for our Coleman canopy. It was raining when we packed it away in a large garbage bag for the trip back to Houston, and I wanted to get it open and dried out before it mildewed. I draped it across the truck for a while, and the wind dried it out pretty quickly. Then I did the same thing for the tarp that we used for a windbreak on the gate.

I wanted to get all this done because the weather is getting ready to turn crappy. Today’s high was 80, but tomorrow night’s low is supposed to be 47. Then Friday’s high is forecast to be 52 and rainy.

A big change.

Turkey Redux . . .

If it’s Thursday, it’s Turkey and Dressing . . . at least at Cracker Barrel.

For our family Thanksgiving Dinner last Thursday, our son Chris whipped up a batch of his great Seafood Gumbo, which we all really enjoyed, but Jan is always jonesin’ for Turkey and Dressing. So much in fact, that we stopped off at the Conroe Cracker Barrel and picked up a Turkey and ‘Dressing’ Thanksgiving Dinner for her to have the next day while she was house/dog sitting for Chris, Linda, and Piper over Thanksgiving weekend.

But ‘Dressing’ is in quotes because Jan didn’t get any with her Cracker Barrel take-out. She got the Turkey, she got the Ham, and she got the veggies, biscuits, and pumpkin streusel dessert, but no dressing.

Today was her day to make up for it. So about 3:30 we drove down to the next exit to have a Turkey and Dressing lupper at Cracker Barrel. And this time she made sure she got her Dressing

Finishing up at CB, we drove on down to the Wal-Mart to pick up some stuff before finally heading home for the night. All in all, a very nice day.

I’ve had some more time to play with the Arduino computer kit and have been working through the hardware/software projects. The hardware stuff is pretty basic, i.e., this circuit varies the flash rate for the LED by turning the potentiometer, but I’m more interested in the software programming part.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

So what I do is go in and rewrite the software for each project to make it do different things, learning as I go. Always fun.

I’ve been reading a couple of good books lately, both by the same author, Steve Lehto. The first one is the story of the development of the rocket belt or jet pack. And there’s even a murder in this story. Even better, you can read this one for free with Kindle Unlimited. A really interesting story.

The Great American Jet Pack: The Quest for the Ultimate Individual Lift Device

The next book is the behind-the-scenes story of Chrysler’s decades-long project to develop a viable turbine-powered family automobile. And despite what you may have read or heard, they did. Able to burn just about any fuel, from gasoline, diesel, and kerosene, to jet fuel, tequila, and perfume, the last version proved to be as good, or even better than anything on the road at the time. In fact, 50 test cars were loaned out for 3-month periods to over 200 ordinary families that put more than a million miles on the cars.

Chrysler’s Turbine Car: The Rise and Fall of Detroit’s Coolest Creation

As it turns out, the US Government pretty much killed the turbine car, but not deliberately, and probably not for the reason you might think.

A very good book, and a great read.

All Pumpkin, All The Time . . .

We spent last night at Brandi’s since it didn’t make sense to make the 90-minute trip back to Conroe and get home after 10 pm.

Jan was up about 6:30 so she could ride along with Lowell and Landon at his school drop-off. This way, Jan could scope out Landon’s school delivery system for next Friday’s repeat. Apparently, there is a pretty involved, computerized procedure for dropping off kids at his school, all controlled with iPads.

This let me sleep in until around 9 am. Yay!

Brandi was feeling a little better this morning, but still nowhere near up to snuff. Hopefully, this bug will pass for her as quickly as it did for Lowell and Landon.

Jan and I headed back to the rig around 10 am, with a bunch of stops along the way. First up was the Kroger’s for gas at $1.58, nice for us now, but not boding well for any gate guarding next year.

Then it was Tractor Supply Company for a few things, before we ended up at Chuy’s for lunch. Although we’ve never eaten at this one, we’ve eaten at several others around Houston, and it’s always good.

As usual, we both got the Mexi-Cobb salad, with their Creamy Jalapeno dressing

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

Besides being delicious, it’s big enough that we both had half left over for supper tonight.

After lunch, we headed over to the Katy Mills Mall area for some shopping. Our first stop was Tuesday Morning, Jan’s favorite Christmas card boutique. They always have high-end cards at deep discounts, so it’s her go-to place every year.

Next up was the Bath & Body Works store in the mall itself to pick up some gifts-to-be, while I had a nice little nap in the car. And with that taken care of, we headed back toward Conroe.

Getting into the area, we made a short stop at the Kroger’s for a few things, and along the way, Jan came across her new pumpkin love,

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

Kroger’s New Pumpkin Flavored Whipped Cream

So now she can have Pumpkin Whipped Cream in her coffee that’s flavored with CoffeeMate Pumpkin Spice Creamer. I guess I’ll have to get her some of that Pumpkin Spice Flavored Coffee, so she can go all the way with it.

All Pumpkin, All The Time.

Getting back to the rig a little before 2 pm, we both ended up taking a nap before we got back to catching up by binge-watching TV shows.

We can’t really watch all the new TV shows while we’re on a Gate, so we just record everything on our DVR and then start catching up later.

So far, we’ve done Big Bang Theory, and we’re almost done with iZombie. Then there’s Grimm, Once Upon A Time, Fargo, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Major Crimes, Castle, etc. So we’ve a few to go.

About 6, we checked in with Brandi and found her somewhat on the mend, feeling better, but still not great. So, hopefully by tomorrow.

We’ve got a busy week coming up. Sunday, we move over to the Colorado River Thousand Trails for two weeks. Then Tuesday, we’ll come back to Brandi’s, where we’re getting together with Chris, Linda, and Piper, to take in the Zoo Lights, the Christmas Lights Spectacular at the Houston Zoo.

Then I’ll come back to the rig that night while Jan stays at Brandi’s. This will give me the couple of days I need to complete all my plumbing projects, i.e., toilet ball and seal replacement, lavatory faucet replacement, and cutting into the wall looking for my shower leak.

Then I’ll come back to Brandi’s Thursday night, Friday morning to do a repeat of Landon’s school drop-off while Brandi’s having her sinus surgery.

Then we’ll kill some time until the late afternoon, when we’ll meet some friends in Pasadena for dinner and the Pasadena Opry Christmas Show.

So, a really busy week. So much for being retired and just kicking back.

Don’t Do It !

First off, I want to thank everyone for their kind words on my latest rant . . . eh, musing. Called “Frederick Douglass, The 3/5 Compromise, and Our ‘Racist’ Constitution” and now available as a stand-alone PDF file. You can find it under the Greg’s Musings tab at the top right of the screen. Thanks again.

Today was my last day (for now) at the Moczygemba gate. I say ‘for now’ because it seems like I keep cycling back through these gates over and over. But the next time at this one, I hope it’s not pouring down rain. Because in this guard shack, when it’s pouring down outside, it’s also pouring down inside.

Well, not as much pouring as running out on the steel desktop and then waterfalling off onto the floor. It comes out from under the metal box holding the surveillance camera electronics on the left side of the tabletop.

I’m still not sure where the water was coming in. It wasn’t running down the wall or coming in around the nearby window. But it was enough that I went through a roll of paper towels and a stack of towels from the potty trailer. But I still had to regularly sweep the pooling water out the door.

We only had eleven trucks in the gate today, most coming in between 6:30 and 7:30 am. Supposedly they’re going to start fracking on Wednesday, so today was just a lot of prep work to get ready.

If you use Google Chrome, and sometimes even if you don’t, you may be surfing the web and suddenly you see this.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

DON’T DO IT!

As Adm. Ackbar says, “It’s a trap!

In most cases, it will not let you back up or get out of it, so just close the tab and move on. If you’ve already done this update, then you’re infected. You can find instructions online to rid yourself of the virus.

Wrapping up, there’s a new infection running through the Android/Google world that you need to check for.

Using an Android device, go here and enter your Google account email address.

This will tell you if yours is one of the 1 million+ accounts that have been breached. Normally, you will only have a problem with this if you’ve downloaded Android software apps outside the Google Play Store. But check it anyway just to be sure.

Let’s be safe out there.

It’s Probably Eyetalian . . .

Work today was pretty slow with nothing much going on, so I just took care of a few loose ends and printed up some new ‘FRAGILE’ labels for our shipments.

Or you may pronounce it ‘FRA JIL E’. It’s probably Eyetalian.

I did discover a problem this weekend that could have been catastrophic under the right (or wrong) circumstances. We were set up to use iDrive’s Linux Server Backup Service on our webserver. Or at least I thought we were.

When I finally got a replacement password from iDrive this weekend, I logged in and found that our service had lapsed 3 weeks ago, due to non-payment. The credit card on file with them had expired, and they had been sending notices to the previous IT guy’s email account, which I still don’t have access to. (or ‘to which I still don’t have access’, in case you’re one of those dangling prep people)

So I went ahead and paid the bill, $374.62, for 2.5TB of backup storage to get things going again. Glad I caught it before things went south.

Jan and I finally got through all the slides, ending up with about 180 slides to possibly have digitized. We’ll make another pass to look at them again before we make a final decision.

Some of the slides are from a family vacation we took out west the summer of 1964, when I was 15. One thing that was hard to believe were photos of us driving on four-lane freeways in LA with only 3 cars ahead of us.

Another thing that was amazing was the fact that the adult General Admission to Disneyland was $1.60. No, that’s not a typo. Or for $4.95, you could get a 15-ride ticket book, which included your General Admission. Oh, and parking was a quarter.

The other thing is the fact that we visited places I don’t remember visiting, Virginia City, NV, for one. We were going through the slides, and suddenly, a slide showing this building popped up.

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

I thought I remembered it from Virginia City when Jan and I visited there in 2013. And I was right.

It’s the Fourth Ward School. Then, a little later, we came across a ‘Welcome to Virginia City’ sign. So I guess we were there, and I just forgot it.

Finally, presaging last week’s The Big Bang Theory, a guy in Wales threw away an old laptop HD in 2013, forgetting that it contained 7,500 Bitcoins, worth about $4 million at that time. He had mined them in 2009, saving the HD when he trashed the laptop, figuring the Bitcoin price would rise. But then over the years, he forgot about it, and the HD got trashed as well.

Now it’s worth $108 million. Ouch

I Feel Left Out . . .

About 1:30, Jan and I headed out for lunch and some more. Since it’s been a while, we drove over to Los Ramirez right off FM646 on FM517. One thing that was interesting was watching a lady paint the Christmas decorations on the restaurant windows.

She was just setting up when we got there, and by the time we left, she was finishing up all six windows. She started by going down the row of windows, doing all the basic shapes of candy canes, wreaths, trees, bells, etc. Then, with the first panels now dry, she went back to the start, adding in the details, and then did it again. She did a really great job in less than an hour. But unfortunately, after all this buildup, I can’t show you because I forgot to get any photos. Sorry.

Maybe I can run by there tomorrow.

Next up were stops at Wal-Mart for more stuff, and then next door Sam’s Club for the prescription that I couldn’t get this past Sunday. While I was there, I asked about the problem with the Sam’s Club app.

You can use the Wal-Mart app to scan your prescription bottle to automate your refills. But when you use the Sam’s Club version of the app and scan your prescription, it doesn’t read the prescription number, but instead just enters the store number. You can still enter the number manually, so it will work that way.

The pharmacy tech said that several other people had mentioned the problem, but that their IT department said it worked fine. When I asked if anyone had actually checked it themselves, she hesitated and then said, “No.”

So, opening my bag, I pulled out the bottle and scanned it with the Sam’s app. And it came up with ‘0470200’, which is their store number.

“Oh.”, was her reply. “I guess we’ll call them again.”

On the gas price front, last Saturday Sam’s Club had regular for $1.79, at least according to Gas Buddy. At the same time, Costco was still at $1.84. However, today both Costco and Sam’s were at $1.81.

Don’t know what happened, but $1.81 is still nice. In fact, as we were later leaving the Costco, Jan asked if I was going to fill up.

“No, it’ll just be cheaper later in the week.”

I feel left out.

I wanted my own blackmail email.

A friend forwarded me this email he received.

Not only didn’t I get an email like this, apparently, I don’t get the porn links either.

Bummer!

Since this was supposed to be done through Fiverr.com, I passed it on to them, and quickly heard back that this was a complete scam and not coming through them.

I figured as much, but wanted to send it on just to be sure.

Tomorrow, Jan starts her eye drops routine, two different ones several times a day, in prep for her cataract surgery Thursday morning, with a checkup on Friday afternoon.

Then her right eye next week.

Torque Pro. . .

On the way home today, I stopped off at O’Reilly’s Auto Parts to pick up a new gas cap for our Jeep. I’ve been getting an occasional (every 4 or 5 days, or so) Check Engine Light, and when I checked the code with my phone, I got a P0442 error code. This translates to a small leak in the Evaporator Emission Control System.

And the most obvious fault is a loose or faulty gas cap. So after I retightened the cap several times and the error came back, so I got a new cap this afternoon and then cleared the code, again with my phone.

And now we wait.

As to how I read and clear engine codes using my phone, I use this OBDII Bluetooth adapter,

Police vehicles tow a detached car axle on a highway.

OBD2 Bluetooth Diagnostic Scan Tool, Mini OBDII Scanner-Check Engine Light Code Reader

And even better, the adapter is only about $12. Much cheaper and more versatile than a standard code reader.

It plugs into the OBDII Diagnostic Port under your dash. Then you just use the free Torque Android app to interrogate your engine computer and display a lot of details with screens like this.

And for only $4.95, you can upgrade to the Torque Pro version, which gives you a lot more options, including CO2 emissions and Horsepower/Torque readings.

Happily Ensconced In Texarkana . . .

I had hoped we’d be on the road this morning by 8-8:30ish. Well I guess 8:31 qualifies as ‘ish’.

It was foggy as we left the rig, which morphed into rain spritzes by the time we turned onto US59N just south of downtown Houston. But it cleared up fairly quickly, and we had a smooth trip up to Nacogdoches, pretty much the halfway point on our trip.

There we used the facilities, got coffee and gas, and swapped drivers, Jan taking over for most of the rest of the way. Then I took over again about 50 miles out.

We got into Texarkana about 2:15, and headed over to have lunch so that once we checked into the hotel, we wouldn’t have to leave again. We had heard good things about Naaman’s BBQ, which, as luck would have it, was right across the street from our Wyndham Gardens hotel.

And the ‘good things’ were correct.

We both got the small two-meat plate, with ribs and brisket.

The ribs were great, and the brisket was cut-with-a-fork tender.

And we just had to finish up by splitting a piece of their Cinnamon Roll Cheesecake,

The place is decorated in a little bit of everything, from ’50’s diners,

to a fancy dining room,

And the ceiling covered in Christmas Balls was really something.

And now we know where we’re eating next Saturday when we come back through here on the way home.

A Busy Week Ahead . . .

Today was another easy one, with a first stop at the office to drop off some parts that had come in, and some Christmas stuff for Jennifer and Dr. Heimlich’s wife.

Then it was on over to Texas Huddle once again for lunch.

We both started with salads,

and then Jan decided to get the Chicken Tenders this time.

She said they were really good.

I stuck with the same wings that I had last time.

And as usual, Juana, our regular server, took great care of us.

It’s a busy week ahead.

Tomorrow afternoon, I’ve got my 1-year evaluation after my Cervical Spine Fusion last November. Probably, I’m going to set up a consultation with my neurosurgeon to talk about a possible lumbar fusion down the road.

Then on Tuesday, we got our monthly Alvin Opry Group get-together at Saltgrass Steakhouse, though we’ll be short a couple of people due to Christmas stuff interfering.

Following up on the Opry theme, Friday night is the Christmas Show at the Alvin Opry. And some old friends are going to be there. Really looking forward to it.

Finally, on Saturday, the Three Acre Truck Park is having their Christmas Market.

Busy, Busy, Busy.

Finishing up, I don’t know if this is Amazing, or Spooky, or Scary!

Or all three.

A while back, I posted this photo from Jan’s Senior Year in 1966.

So, of course, I had to colorize it.

My beautiful wife-to-be.

Then I did this.

And this.

The site that lets you do this is My Heritage. It’s primarily a Genealogy site, along with DNA testing. But it also has some neat video features.

Thanks to our new friend Melinda King for turning me on to this.

It’s Just Food . . .

I was back at work today, trying to wrap up a bunch of things before we go a-cruising this Saturday.

Leaving there about 1:30, I headed back down to our area for my PT session. Checking in at the counter, I waited for about 20 minutes, 10 minutes past my 2:15 appointment time, before they finally came out and told me my appointment was actually tomorrow, Thursday, at 2:30 pm.

WTH

My appointments are always on Wednesday at 2:15. I’ve never had any other date/time. Ironically, at my last session, when I booked this one, I didn’t get an appointment printout that might have shown the problem.

They wanted to know if I still wanted to come in tomorrow, but I said No, since we have too much stuff still to do before our cruise.

Tomorrow we’re both getting our haircuts, and then lunch at Los Rameriz Mexican for some good Mexican food before we travel to Mexico.

In case you think this is funny, having been in Mexico a number of times in my life, I can tell you that what we eat here as Mexican food, is nothing like what they eat in Mexico.

Of course, they don’t call it Mexican Food in Mexico. They just call it ‘Food’.

Then more packing, and repacking.

Our friend Chris LaClaire clued us in on Formal Nights on our upcoming cruise. She told us that Formal Nights are always on At Sea nights, and usually two nights. So for us, that would be our 2nd night and our 8th night, but we’ll see.
